I drove to Dallas from western Canada in Nov 1995 and when I finished my business there, I drove an extra 650 miles to El Paso to sit in Rosa's Cantina and have a drink, all for the love of this song. Thx Marty and Raul. It was worth it.
I totally agree. He can sing songs by the greatest singers of all time: Presley, Orbison, Robbins, Sinatra, Dino, Eddy Arnold, Jim Reeves and totally sing versions as well as the orginals while not copying them, sounds totally like himself - yet captures what was great about the original version and never changes the song so much that it loses the classic sound and orignal spirit. I don't know of another artist around today that can do that. He's equally as good as any of the best of all time
Absolutely ... couldn't have said it better. Amazing that he can be so versatile . His version of Orbison's "Crying" is as close as anyone gets to the original
Absolutely,... one of the finest singers I know of , doesnt matter what he sings its always excellent, Hes redone piles of old hits , they are all great
Once again Raul Malo proves what an exceptional artist he is. The classic version of this song is undoubtedly that of Marty Robbins, but Malo nails it so well that were he alive to see this performance, I'm sure that Robbins would also be upstanding at the conclusion of Malo's performance, happy & willing to acknowledge that Malo has taken the song to a new high. A truly brilliant artist - with a voice unique in every way.
I play this song for people who have not heard this version. Every time its played we all get goosebumps. Marty Robbins is looking down and saying well done.
The young Marty Robbins in the early 1950s Sitting under the neon lights In the drive- way of the Blakely Gas Station in Glendale Arizona. There Marty honed his muscical talent he would later share with the World. God loved the song El Paso, so he booked Marty indefinately. The Good Lord takes care of us music lovers, so The Lord gave us Raul Malo...
I am a life long fan of Marty and Im sure Marty would approve of Rauls beautifull interpitation of El Paso. Raul does lovely versions of the Big O songs as well.
This man can hum better than I can even try to sing. Seems like some people just have to put down people who are gifted like he is!!!! My favorite singer and I don't care what anyone says!!!!!!!!!!!
Brilliant as ever -what can't he sing? I danced a Vienna Waltz to this and it was brilliant- who would think it- a cowboy song and a vienna waltz! Thanks for posting.
This is about as close as anyone will ever come to matching Marty Robbins's original. What I'm constantly amazed by is the song itself, which Robbins wrote. It's a perfect story-song, tightly cinematic in its imagery and multiple perspectives. Matchless images "I saw the white puff of smoke from the rifle / I felt the bullet go deep in my chest/" Who can fail to see the same thing? "El Paso" is like a three-minute John Ford Western -- tough, sentimental, surprising and unforgettable.
+Jeremiah Horrigan So tru Jeremiah, I first heard this song when I was about 8 and the pictures still run in my mind whenever I hear it. nice memories.
Storytelling -- in music, movies or in writing -- is all about those pictures. And we Robbins did it better than almost anyone, working within the confines of the 3-minute song, pop music fashion, C&W fashion -- and succeeded most impressively.
Heres my take on Raul. To start, look to our past. The true MUSICAL GENIUS. Marty, roy, elvis merle, willie, lefty. These are all mostly DEAD. So along comes Raul, who is a genius himself. Now, that he can sing all their songs and gives me joy because his bringing these old favs back... Raul, dont stop! You feed that spot in my heart, the old ones filled. great voice loven it ALL!
My Grandparents had this Mary Robbins album. I still remember the jacket cover of Mary drawing that six shooter from his hip! My late Grandparents had a great sounding RCA stereo that they played Elvis and Marty albums on!
I was stationed in El Paso at the Army post there, Ft Bliss, many years ago. This song came out and I was drawn back to Marty Robbins, from my childhood in South Texas as a child. I literally, could see this event happening in El Paso. I love Raul Malo. It was a perfect song at at a difficult time in my training. Raul sings so beautifully. Such a voice! As a South Texas cowboy by birth, this song speaks volumes to my upbringing. Coritha songs are wonderful.
Well put digi, the ONLY time I ever heard him on the radio was about 12 years ago on the University of Penn station out of Philly when his album "Today" came out. Knew right then and there he was something special, Not just a great voice but more like an instrument. So versatile and classic. That album has to rank up there in my top 10 faves. If you haven't done so yet, check it out and I guarantee you'll love it too or I'll refund your......!
As a life long fan of our Marty I think *Raul* has done a lovely version of El Paso. I get the feeling he listened to Marty*s Records withe same appreciation as me. But in the end nobody can really sing like our *Marty*
Absolutely beautiful version of the Marty Robbins classic, a fitting tribute by one of the best (if not the best) male voices in Country music today. Raul Malo's range is amazing and his natural vibrato is a thing of beauty. So glad that the Mavericks are back together again sharing their wonderful musical talents with us all.
Beautiful. After 54 years, this song still makes me cry. When Marty released this song, records on the radio were typically around 3 minutes long. It was a credit to the greatness of this song and Marty's beautiful voice that it got played, all 4 minutes and 38 secs. Went #1 January 1960 both pop and country. Raul's tempo is a tad slower. I bet a 6 minute record would never have been played in 1960.
Marty passed a long time back, I saw him once in my life in Melbourne Australia , he was visiting on tour and was a legend. Great show. Raul Malo is fantastic, a suitable tribute to Marty, I like it too when Raul dances the night away too. GREAT VERSION THIS.
This rendition of Marty Robbin's classic should prove to anyone, who has any understanding of music, or any vocal/musical training, just how accomplished this artist really is. Spot on performance. Also, pay attention to the inflections that Raul uses. Absolutely a brilliant! Turn down the volume and try to follow his pitch. You will not be able to match it unless you are gifted. Thank the lord for Raul Malo!
Raul is one of the greatest voices that country music has ever had!!! Very under rated, and unappreciated artist
great voice full stop
This is one of those rare songs, that if you don't want to listen to it, you can close your eyes and watch it.
I agree 100%
It is sad that Nashville does not appreciate this Band's music. I am so pleased that I found them.
thats right....100 %
I drove to Dallas from western Canada in Nov 1995 and when I finished my business there, I drove an extra 650 miles to El Paso to sit in Rosa's Cantina and have a drink, all for the love of this song. Thx Marty and Raul. It was worth it.
Richard de Boer WOW!!!!!! What a man, what a man!!!!!!!you are, Richard!!!!!! To actually sit in Rosas Cantina. Awesome
When your bandmates join the standing ovation, you know you've nailed it.
I totally agree. How do 27 people NOT like this? Raul could sing the phone book and make it an instant classic. And this song actually IS an American classic.
I completely agree with you!
They're probably some old scruffy fossils jealous of him!
Exactly!!!
Absolutely,... one of the finest singers I know of , doesnt matter what he sings its always excellent, Hes redone piles of old hits , they are all great
realmusicnj Yes, a classic. Love his voice. January 2020
Look at Raul's eyes when he sings...not only does he sing this song beautifully, he radiates the emotion from within...not many people can do that.
He has the voice of an angel, Raul can do NO wrong!!!!
Not just country music, he has one of the greatest voices MUSIC has ever had!
Superb
Raul is so amazing. Never in my life have I ever heard a finer voice.

Anyone singing this will always be compared to Marty Robbins. No contest. But Raul Malo sure makes a great job of it!
+verimadmags vMM It's live, have you heard the Robbins version live?
Wow, what a voice. My husband, Ron Stone (from El Paso) sang this song so beautifully and had the wonderful vibrato like Raul.

A heavenly gift.
I am a life long fan of Marty and Im sure Marty would approve of Rauls beautifull interpitation of El Paso.
Raul does lovely versions of the Big O songs as well.
Exactly
Arguably the best country and western song ever, sung by arguably the best voice around ❤❤
HE HAS SUCH GREAT RANGE IN HIS WONDERFUL VOICE
Music would play and Felina would whirl... Fantastic 😍
I would pay a ridiculous amount of money to hear The Mavericks perform the El Paso trilogy in person.
This man can hum better than I can even try to sing. Seems like some people just have to put down people who are gifted like he is!!!! My favorite singer and I don't care what anyone says!!!!!!!!!!!
Hot damn! Raul Malo really gets that song. Didn't think anyone would beside Robbins.
The Roy Orbison of modern music
Man, what a voice. Sent chills down my spine when he sang, "Wild as the West Texas wind......"
Brilliant as ever -what can't he sing?
I danced a Vienna Waltz to this and it was brilliant- who would think it- a cowboy song and a vienna waltz!
Thanks for posting.
Such an underrated voice. Been a Raul/Mavericks fan since way back. I always wondered why he never became more mainstream.
Love love everything about them!!! Magical voice! 2033 the best one again!’♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Did Marty Robbins proud. What a beautiful version of this great country song.
A masterpiece story of true love Raul has a rich and beautiful voice it touches my heart .

Tops, Tops, Tops....only Marty, OR Roy could do this song as good as Raul....

One of the greatest voices ever!
WOW!!!! Bravo!!! Fabulous performance! Exquisite vocals!!!
One of the very best voices ever in my opinion and very underrated. Raul can sing anything, and enunciates every word cleanly. Beautiful!
I would say... EXTREMELY underrated. He is the bomb, and covers a wide range of music.
