Don't money shift any manual transmission car***
Can’t hurt a rotary engine doing it
it happens by accident but most new cars will cut the power. Also If it does happen just gtta grab the clutch and itll disengage the transmission.
Newer cars also have a lockout, where it wont fully go into gear if the rpm is too high for the downshift.
Agree
now what if it's lego he he
Best impression of car sounds with a mouth
Had manuals all my life. Never heard of this and never done one also.
Same here, this vid really surprised me lol
My MK7 GTI has VTEC? Sweet.
rockervdrive Yeah I love my integra gsr but the flaw in the Vtec design is using increased oil pressure to lock the rockers to follow the Vtec lobe. The problem with that is, it's sub ceptable to oil consumption which many Honda Vtec owners have to deal with. One fix for this is using solenoid to switch the rockers to the high lobe like in our MK7 GTI . It's to bad its only on our exhaust cam and not the intake cam too which would of made for even more power out of the IS20.
Uncle Rusty yeah but we have valve lift too , that's where u make the power . Variable valve timing can give you good mpg and a nice flat torque curve but the added lift & duration of the secondary cam lobe gives you the power. Still only a few cars have 2 stage camshafts, it's to bad this is only featured on the exhaust cam and not the intake cam as well.
Almost all cars do
I accidentally "money shifted" in my MINI a couple of times (trying to go from 2nd to 3rd gear under full throttle, ended up going into 1st gear). No damage was done, but damn I felt dumb especially considering I've been driving a stick for 17 years now. I half blamed it on having a Sprint Booster throttle enhancer and driver error. Sprint Booster is awesome, but in race mode ("red") the throttle is REALLY responsive. Almost too much so. Gotta be careful in between shifts under full throttle.
Mavusi Kenpachi check out I-VTEC, it's variable camshaft timing and lift electronic control, and variable valve timing.
Shid I was just about to do this to my gti, thanks for the heads up
LOL
Man, in my Mk7 it doesn't want to slip into first unless I'm under like 7 MPH...so I don't think I have to worry about "money shifting" into first. I don't know how you could miss a 3-4 shift because it is straight down. The only mis-shift I have ever made is going from 5th to 4th when I intended on 6th but I've only had it happen a couple of times and the revs were at like 3k so no worries
Brandon Harlow that's the same exact missed shift I did soon after I got the car. Might have made it up to 4500 or so.
same
Brandon Harlow well on my mk6 gli, before i upgraded to a short shift, the pulls were very long. starting in 2nd on a pull at 30mph and to just rip it into 3rd at red line the car would want to go back into first. i would have to really push it to the right to make sure it went into 3rd. but after a short shifter upgrade (on the transmission) thats no longer an issue
in my car i cant shift into first unless I go like 1 mph at most or use double clutch and blip in neutral
Brandon, I also have an MKVII and have never had any issues because the shifter is under tension. If I gently push it with the clutch in, it snaps back to neutral. I wonder if this is why they tensioned it. My previous car (MINI Cooper) also did this. I've "money shifted" only once but I caught the over-rev (the sound is unmistakable!!) and went to neutral as fast as I could. The dealer told me I got lucky and nothing was wrong with the engine. I think you'd have to be a bit drunk or very distracted to "money shift".
BRUH!!! LMAO "Hey whats the price tag on one of those?" great video
I have to admit it’s happened to me a couple of times. It can honestly happen to anyone. I’ve been driving manual transmission vehicles since age 8, I’m 32 now. Luckily for me it’s only resulted in revving right up to the red line and not past. I let off the gas and depress the clutch immediately.
When I was a new driver, I managed few times to miss gears, from 4th to 2nd, from 2nd to 1st... but my car does not let you to miss gears, hard to pull in 2nd if you're going to switch to 4th :)
I was going about 55mph in my 05 B5.5 1.8t Passat wagon, I was planning on going from 4th to 5th, but I missed 5th and hit 3rd, luckily the clutch wasn't fully engaged, so I didn't break anything. Clutch, engine, and transmission still feel fine. The engine only jumped to about 4000rpm when doing that.
The mk7 won't physically let you go into a lower gear if it thinks it will go over redline. At least in my 17 GTI.
I am certain you can just shove it into gear. I think that's what he meant while you are racing. No gear is truly locked out.
eeeehm ......NOT true, first gear is protected, you seriously have to be a total idiot not to feel that when you try to shift to it while you're driving.
please explain how is the first gear PROTECTED ?
Brian Dahdouh false I work at VW and this week got an R in which driver has done just this, whole new engine
Brian Dahdouh mines the exact same on my corsa bro I know what you mean. When I hit like 10mph it doesn’t want to go into first I have to punch it into first if I really want to. But still, I don’t know how anybody can money shift, 2nd to third just throw it up it’ll bounce into neutral then it’s straight up. People don’t know their cars🤔
I hit 3rd instead of 5th (from 4th) when I was learning to drive, but doing about 80km/h just caused a bit of a jolt when I let out the clutch and about 4000 rpm. I don't know how anyone manages to money shift from top of 2nd to 1st because you have to ram it in hard to actually get into gear because of the transmission speed difference.
Eh my old 09 took it like a champ twice. Banged it back into first after redlining second. I also had 160k miles. She was a trooper
I had a 94 Probe GT and a 2006 G35 coupe that were both manual. I drove those manuals for 18 years and this never happened to me. When I clicked on the video I thought you meant shifting without the clutch. I could do that in my G35 by just putting slight pressure on the shift when slowing and when the speed matched the engine rpms it would just slip into the lower gear.
Excellent video. Good info and hilarious 👍🏼
I did it my e.g. going like 3rd to 2nd by accident I didn't hear any thing until I got to a stop I could here popping sounds coming out from my exhaust . I think I messed up a valve but this was awhile back
I moneyshifted :) once my B8 Passat 1.4 tsi (european version) from 3 rd to 2 nd.
For 1 second ,maybe 2 (i'm not sure) run in redline but i immediately pressed the clutch.
After that, i'm drivng my car for least 10.000 km and there is no problem or nothing seems wrong.
i moneyshifted in my octavia 3 1.8 tsi (european version) from 2nd to 1st.
Again, 1-2 seconds the engine was at 9000rpm. Now the engine is idling with a knock.
@@vladmihai306 after my first comment, my 1.4 tsi has 70.000 more km run. Total odo 123000 km
Still zero issue🙏
I money shifted my 99 civic and blew it into flames trying to run a 7second quarter mile. It did it using the paddle shifters to unfortunately. Thank you for this video i now know to never downshift when im redlining third gear!
I've haven't done it personally but I was in a car when it happened. Kid bought a civic hatch and he was not used to that shifter 3rd to 2nd.. I can see how it happens.
I have a MK7.5 and I've accidentally went from 5 to 2 trying to get into 4. I noticed the RPM jump halfway through letting go the clutch and caught it lol. I just gotta let the shifter naturally spring into the center rather than force it. I didn't even get close to redline when I caught it anyway
that moment when you go from 2nd into reverse 😂👌
race mode engaged
I laughed at this at first because I have a 5 speed and I thought you were being extremely ridiculous but then I remembered the GTI in the video is a 6 and that's actually possible lol
@@williampierce5579 how would that be possible you have to press the shifter in and go to the far left to get into reverse
@@williampierce5579 when u care too much about a joke 😂👌
I remember one poor guy on the forums who did it to his MK5 Rabbit. I believe he just ended up buying a new engine. I've come close to doing it from from near redline in 4th back to 3rd (in my old Rabbit), but never let the clutch out all the way.
I’ve done this maybe like twice both times when driving extremely aggressive but like he said both times I caught it just by hearing the RPMs spike for a split second and push the clutch back in to save it and it hasOnly happened on one specific car with a pretty sloppy shifter and 6 fwd gears.
What if you have a rev limiter? Will it catch it in time to prevent damage?
Used to have a 16v scirocco in high school with extremely worn out shift linkage. Banged third coming HARD out of fourth on at least 2 occasions, it sounded like it had to have turned 9k+ rpms for at least half a second. Thankfully i got the clutch back in quickly enough to avoid any serious damage. Replace those worn out shift bushings kiddos.
Wow....the "performance" cam lobe section actually physically slides over.....huh.
That's pretty neat. I wonder what the reason/advantage is for doing it that way, as opposed to all the other ways.
Did this once a few years ago, meant to bang 3rd and accidentally hit 1st, immediately hit the clutch and the car was perfectly fine. It's mostly driver error, adrenaline mostly. But it happens to everyone. It doesn't make you a bad driver at all, unless you're constantly money shifting..
iv moneyshifted 4th to 5th... dang that was not expected xD
Engine took it like a champ tho, could finish the race and engine still runs to this day:D
Bruh you know you cant bang gears in a GTI
Boss Dude can't even do it with modern Honda's , rev hang and clutch delay valves put a stop to that from an out the box experience.
Skylin Megas you can bang gears in the new type r it's the best shifter on the market
f181234 you mean cheapest shifter
f181234 if by "best shifter on the market" you mean the 2nd gear grinds plaguing it, you would be correct.
My vr6 rips
The bottom ends are pretty strong from factory but they still blow apart if you over rev there also interference engines so even is your t belt jumps a tooth or 2 kiss that engine good by
I went from 3rd to second at the top of third. So far I haven’t noticed anything wrong but I don’t want to take my car to the dealership without clearing the over rev code. Can you clear the code with a OBD11? I don’t know if anyone with VCDS. I can’t risk losing the warranty or the dealership knowing about it.
Ive money shifted into second in my moms Kia Sportage when I was 17. And it was my first time driving. Have never done it again.
Did a 3-2 in my car. All I needed was a few rocker arms and she was all good again. Probably cuz redline in my car is 6250 and the engine can actually handle upwards of 7 if you tune let it rev that high.
Do you still sell the TSI chain gang t-shirt? I'd really like to have one! I love my DAP University shirt I got at WBTB this year!
I've gone from 3rd to 2nd once just put the clutch back in it's pretty hard to fuck up shifting tbh
I've done this twice when learning how to downshift and went from 5th to 2nd, but luckily I wasn't going fast enough to fuck it up.
I think the MK7 should have the shifting gate... did you guys disable it?
Don't see how that's possible unless your an novice or shitty manual driver if your any of those two then you've no place in a GTI or any manual car except for a daihatsu Matiz .
My worst thing is actually being over aggressive with first to second .
That's the most important shift off the lights . Getting that clutch right for the launch is equally important .
what the fuck is a daihatsu matiz hahahahahaa
love it, great vid :)
question: why does he exclude 4th to 5th money shifts? seems it would also be possible to go to 3rd accidentally in that case...
and 60 miles per hour accidentally shifted it to Second for like 2 or 3 seconds is that bad I hurried up and push the clutch back in
I done this with my mk6 gti a few times owning it 2 months now and it being my first vw. Happens going from 3rd to 4th but end up going to 2nd accidentally. I usually catch it before any major damage is done. But it still sucks and embarrassing. The only car i have ever done this with
Buddy borrowed my car and did this. 🙄 I have one “cam actuator” bent inside the engine and VW is telling me I need a new engine and they won’t change it out for me. Do you guys sell those solenoids? I’ve put 23k miles on the engine since that happened. Car runs great Only issue is that if I bring the RPM’s over 4.5k-5K rpm engine goes into limp mode epc light comes on. Restart the engine and back to normal. Shooting a code for the “cam actuator” but looking at the engine one of those has pliers marks on it and looks like they took it out and put it back in.
Valve float is normally high freq vibrations prohibiting valves from sitting in the seat thus overheating. Far more common is bigend damage because of tremendous forces....afaik
1:26 🤣💀 that alone is worth a thumbs up, lol
dont u have to put it in R mode first RACE mode right.
I have a question about my mk7 tsi 1.8t 3gen motor can a cobb access port tune can be use in my car?!?!? Need help
How does one go from 3rd to 2nd when going to upshift -*-
Sound effects on point.
I almost money shifted in my mk4 1.8t jetta, but I had to drive myself to the ER with my right wrist being broken and I had to shift with my left hand as I was getting on to the highway
I have a 2017 and money shift all the time by mistake and the car blocks me from doing it...
I've done that once in my MK5, from 6. to 2. on the highway. Luckily the engine survived
That's a mean looking shift knob there!
yo omg the fake engine noise during the shifts are just perfect!!! lmao
My Mk7 Jetta rline wont shift into 1st unless im under like 10km/h prob dont have to worry about money shifting if you have a MK7.5 GTI or R
It was a big issue with the 2ZZ-GE Celica 6MT
I have nearly managed to do a 3-2 shift instead of a 3-4 shift lately, luckily not pulling 3rd that hard so dropping the clutch ended up in the high 4000's. Here's how I messed it up.
I had just the green light when I noticed an ambulance with emergency lights on. It was a long left turn lane to a birdge so I floored it.
I didn't rev through all gears, only WOT on the boost range until the high 3000's and shift up to 3rd and remain on boost. I was still in the turn when I wanted to shift 4th.
But beacuse of the lateral forces and having no bucket seats, I leaned slightly to the left. Same move of putting 4th while leaning left = putting to 2nd.
I’m hoping someone can help me.
6mt 2016 gti. Stage 1 034 motor sports tune. All has been great. I noticed recently while in sport mode the car on light throttle decelerates harsh. Almost like mounts loose but they don’t feel that way. When in normal mode smooth as butter. Is this just sport mode? I also have an 034 dog bone mount. Am I just feeling it more. I don’t feel like it’s been this harsh. Car has 35k fairly easy miles.
If you shift slightly slower, the auto rev match will warn you of an impending money shift. What do you mean no auto rev match?
I like the acting! I would’ve given you the Oscar personally
Is it possible to money shift dsg? I was in 1st thought i went to second ended up staying in first once I realized i obviously put it into second and continued until onto 6th gear. Once it started down shifting it bogged out an turned completely off. It turned right back on but I’m having back firing issues now and cruise control no longer works. Any ideas? Mk5 r32 😢
money shifted my subi wagon and its fine as far as i know. possibly might have something bad coming in the future
My mk6 gti locks 1st and 2nd gear if you’re going too fast to prevent money shifting. 1st is locked above 25mph and 2nd is locked above 50-55mph. I’ve never gone fast enough to see if 3rd locks you out but I’m also not trying to see the inside of a jail.
Dont manual transmissions in general lock you out of first gear you have already shifted into second? I mean when you push the clutch in and try to put it first when the car is moving slow it has a hard time letting until you come almost to a complete stop
Isaac Velasco On some transmissions 1st isn't synchronized, so it won't go in unless you have everything at the right speed. Both manual cars I've owned had synchros on 1st.
It shouldnt be hard to fix for a car manufacturer. All you need are mechanical barriers at your shifter that open/close the shift gaps at certain speeds.
Managed to do 5th to 2nd at 80mph in my fiesta but I put the clutch back down before anything could happen
I thought the Mk7 (and any newer manual vehicle) won't even let you money shift?
My car wont let me shift into first unless im travelling under 15mph
Man this just happened to me last night in my MK7.5 GTI under full load running a is38 with only 30k on the car pulling against a 392 charger, I noticed it too late and car went into limp mode and check engine light started to blink. Pulled codes and getting codes for misfire on 3 of 4 cylinders😢 definitely bent some valves
What would happen if you go from 7 to 1
A buddy I knew money shifted in his 600+ hp 3000gt vr4... needless to say he blew the engine right up. He still ended up selling it for like 4-5k
i made my ka24e sound like a sport bike one time going from 3rd to 2nd
Moneyshifted my 2016 golf R lol dealer covered it but it was like 2500 worth of work and they had the car for about 6 weeks
That meme placement in the beggening 😂😂😂😂😍
It's "what's the retail on one of those?"
most Transmissions won't let you do this because the syncros will be spinning to fast to engage the lower gear and it will grind.
I was not ready for that fast and furious clip I died 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
You can money shift trying to downshift from 5th to 4th but accidentally going into 2nd
This happens to me pretty regularly when I'm tired and driving slow on 4th gear and think I'm on 2nd :D Too much driving relying on my unconscious..
Can we talk about downshifting???? Like 3rd to 2nd I feel like I'm holding back because the clutch release
revmatch it and it should be a lot easier
While spirited driving the other day in my MK7, I missed an up shift from 4-5 and landed in neutral. The engined revved, obviously from me hitting the gas while in neutral. In this circumstance, could I have damaged anything? Thanks!
Nope. Unless it was in a lower gear
no
Its possible to 4 to 1????
I actually did that once on my mk4 vr6... Luckily Nothing bad happened
You can also do this when you go to select a lower gear from cruising in a high or top gear ie you think your going slow enough for second but really needed third
So can i money shift my honda civic 1.6 si? Please respond soon
You can but it's not recommended. We advise getting a VW or Audi this way you can be more concerned.
I had a v6 and v8 Mustang and I would money shift on purpose, they were tuff and took it no prob
Guess this applies to common Golfs as well then as well.
In a focus st so different for the most part....... how the funk can you not feel the synchro fight 2nd to 1st!?!?!?
Because you ram it in.
My dad came from his gti and went into my mums Toyota and almost when from 5th to reverse because he was used to 6th....
My 09 tdi doesn’t even let shift into a lower gear if it’s not safe
I went from red limit 2nd gear to 1st and dumped the clutch once still with the throttle wide open. Tookabout 2 seconds before I noticed my engine were at 13 000 RPM, and when I changed from 1st to 3rd, my exhaust blew up and separated from the middle. That drive to home were loud and noisy, and kind of cool! But never again.
I once shifted from 3rd to 2nd and my dog died.
You got lucky, my friend let his neighbor drive his brand new M2 once, and he did exactly that. Bent the valve stems and destroyed the motor. $30,000 rebuild.
ElliottJordan what the fuck we have exactly the same names
Jordan E Ill get the lube
ElliottJordan like your comment for sympathy
Those clips were hilarious
Nice video; it would've been even better if you had discussed properly shifting technique to prevent money shifting!
(I.e. proper palm placement on the shift knob for each of the gears, proper timing of clutch/shift/gas, and determining the correct pressure to exert on the shifter to allow the synchros do their job.)
smohan123 eh
I was under the impression that most modern cars have a gear lockout based on engine speed that prevents this from happening. I’ve banged 2nd to 3rd in my mk5 GTI many times and never felt that I could slip into 1st.
Mines the same and reverse,it's pretty much I'm possible to put it in unless stationary
my 2001 Audi A4 wont let me go from 2nd to 1st at high speed. feels like the shifter just hits a wall.
I money shifted mine about a year and 15,000 miles ago. Since then I’ve tuned the car and still haven’t had an issue. This guy must’ve hit like 9k rpm
I money shift my 6 gti 130 from 3 to 2 ...1sec i rev to 8000 seems to be good for the moment !
How is it holding up?
This seems hard to do after driving manuals for a decade plus, every car I have had gently guides you to the next gear just pull or push….
I accidentally money shifted from third to second going 50 on the highway in my 91 Civic and it still runs like a beast
does it still run like a beast? lol
50 in second is not money shift
50 is allowed in 2nd. shifting at 80 into second - that's a money shift
