"Potential Charges?" If you dump trash out the window of your car it's a $500 fine. I'm certain dumping trash into our pristine waters has major consequences. This was deliberate and celebrated by the perpetrators. Authorities need to get TOUGH on this!

It’s a minimum $10,000 dollar fine apiece for dumping that much. Ocean littering fines are based off of the calculated guess of the weight of litter. Any time served, probation,or community service is a toss up. But with this much world wide media coverage whoever the judge is will give them the max of everything he/she can by law.

They all need a heavy prison sentence. This is so wrong! My husband and I pulled a tire out of the ocean at Dania Beach a month ago. I was shocked at how much trash was allowed around the beaches. The lifeguard s were so grateful that we were getting the tire out. We agreed that the ocean should be clean. Everyone should know that trash doesn’t go in the ocean.

Littering Laws and Boating in Florida
littering fines and rules in Florida
Did you know that littering laws in Florida extend to boaters? It’s important to understand and comply with these regulations to maintain the cleanliness and health of Florida’s waterways. Federal law strictly prohibits the disposal of any garbage from a boat while in lakes, rivers, bays, sounds, and offshore within 3 miles of the ocean.
Violations of the littering laws can lead to severe penalties, including civil fines of up to $25,000 and criminal fines of up to $50,000. In addition, individuals may face possible prison sentences. Properly disposing of garbage and waste helps preserve the pristine beauty of Florida’s waterways and ensures the safety of marine life.
Please note that this law does not cover sewage or sink and shower water, which have separate regulations in place.
When enjoying Florida’s waterways, it’s essential to be mindful of the impact your actions can have on the environment. By following proper boating practices and disposing of trash responsibly, you can contribute to the cleanliness and preservation of these natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

I was told we couldn't just throw the bags overboard. So we would put them in a round metal container on the fantail. Here comes the fun part. The container didn't have a bottom. So the garbage bags would just fall out of the bottom of the container and float away behind the ship. Apparently at the time it was legal to do this. Fun times.
