Been living and working in Malaysia for 3 years. Took me a couple of months to realize what a gem this place is. Applying for a 10 year residency this month. Some massive pluses:
Great lifestyle at a very reasonable cost
Multi ethnic society, hence more accepting of foreigners
Vibrant culture and reasonably paced (unlike Dubai or Singapore)
Summer all year

English is well understood

just renewed mm2h and have been on the programe for years and we love it no problems. lately to many nay sayers on CZcams who don't know what they are talking about.

Those people almost never leave their own country, here or other countries.
I know many of them here in U.S.
They haven't even been been to Mexico.
And they have no intention to go there.

Im a malaysian born..i hv been to afew other country but i still think malaysia are still the best land to live..with minimum income but we still live in landed property & own a car also we dont need to work like hell bcoz dont need much money for food unless you shop till drop..its affordable and relax life..where enxiety & stress rarely exist..only some cases and the best is education are not abusive just enough hours like working people..its good..welcome to Malaysia❤❤

Malaysia offers a great lifestyle but I feel they don't know what they intend their MM2H program to be. It used to attract retirees who would rent/buy property and support the local economy. Then they changed it to attract wealthy investors. When that failed, they changed it again and now it's just too confusing. I'd be interested in living there, but not when they keep changing the rules. How can you trust your investment and lifestyle can continue as planned? I don't want to have to start all over in a few years.
very relevant comment. I think once someone makes the commitment and invests they should be grandfathered in and be insulated from any changes. That clearly wasnt the case as some people got cut as a result of Malaysia jacking up minimums to keep up the MM2H - that was unfair.

I'm a property agent in Klang Valley and I have been approached by many expats wanting to buy a home in Malaysia but unfortunately they found out that they cannot simply own just any property. For example today, if you want to purchase a home in the state of Selangor, the house SPA price must be RM2mil.
Wished you had elaborated more about the tax consequences for the various visas you mentioned as this could be an important deciding factor, no one wants to be taxed twice on the same income source.

Too cramped, too stressful, too strict, too expensive, too inhumane. You can't afford to wake up and smell the roses even when your body and mental is in desperate need to do so. The society is too petty; in apartments etc, flushing after 10 pm is already dreaded. Local traditions such as bon odori being cancelled everywhere due to complaints of noise in local neighbourhoods (in contrast with Malaysia, who celebrates everything, to the point our local Bon Odori has 50k people in attendance). They are also hostile against children; you better pray your kids are silent like a doll every time you have the disfortune to appear in the public. Unlike Singapore who are at least unashamed to unleash their agression at hair pin trigger (much like HK), Japanese are too much of double-faced society (tatemae) that forces you to hide whatever it is you are bottling inside, which can lead to the extremes due to having to repress normal human needs and emotions.
Their policies are also mirroring USA more and more these days, even allowing men with no medical therapy whatsoever (in honest words, simply a man) unfettered access to women's single sex spaces. They also defunded rape shelter because the founder refuses to drop "trans" when talking about trans women. A weird take for them, pretending not to know what is a women considering they even have a law mandating shutter sounds due to sexual harassment against women. It's also a place ironically lagging behind in technology, even compared to a supposed third world country like the West often calls Malaysia, in day to day operation; they depend on stamps and faxes even to this very day. It's a gorgeous place to travel, and that's it.

Just visit on a 90-day visitor visa and then go on a visa run if you want to extend. MM2H costs are farcical.
Are visa runs legal in Malaysia? How long would you recommend exiting the country before returning?
Some other visa run visitors have remarked that (some) savvy Customs officials have cottoned on and will put you on a blacklist.

we had residency in Malaysia in 2006 with MM2H . But there were so many problems and start/stops with MM2H and changes by the government that after 10 years we gave up and left Malaysia. We wanted to buy property but found there is no land database in Malaysia and its very difficult to prove ownership . Also in the past there were major problems of security . The best MM2H scheme is the one in Sarawak

After everything said, I am a canadian citizen with a canadian passport and i can get a 90 days visa upon entry ....so honestly is better to check out after the 90 days and head over to another country for a bit then come back. After all, you really need a visa to purchase a property or open a bank account or to even enjoy Malaysia. If you really think about it these regualtions and rules and requirements for these visas are absolutely a waste of time and money if your passport allows you to stay for 90 days and purchase a property
I am also Canadian, and agree with the idea of not bothering with a MM2H visa. I plan to alternate between 2 or 3 countries per year, traveling light, and being sure to not try to re-enter the same country more than once per year. In the eyes of Malaysian immigration, I'll just be someone who comes to the country for 3 months every year, then leave until next year. That shouldn't be frowned upon by anyone.

These requirements are ridiculous. The average overseas employee cannot meet these requirements. When they say high network, they mean it. 😮

For the MM2H or MM2H-S visa. What is consider as foreign monthly income, can you give me some examples (other than the social security or pension)?
Other forms of foreign income would be rent received, dividends, interest paid on bank deposits, sale of assets, other contributions/ deposits, e.g. a stipend, trust fund monthly/ quarterly payments etc.

Someone on this thread said you're not grandfathered in, so yes the new changes will affect you. Since your visa will be up for renewal this year, could you let us know if that is true? Also how many more times will you be allowed to renew your visa, I heard there may be a limit, you may only renew twice? Or the total number of years is limited to 15 or 20 yrs?

The presenter tells us as well that one cannot obtain citizenship through naturalization. How, then, does one become a citizen, or is that not possible in most cases? The name of the visa is "Maylaysia My 2nd Home." That seems to imply that one must have a 1st home elsewhere. Then we are told that the requirements will be modified, next year. How often will they be modified? Are those who were admitted previously "grandfathered-in" after the requirements have been modified. The introduction raises more questions than it answers.

You need to tell people foreigners inc mm2h holders are required to pay double to visit attractions like zoos etc. The gouging does not stop there. Mm2h retirees were denied entry to their homes during COVID - where the heck were they supposed to go?. Malaysia is a great country but don't sugarcoat what is a kleptocratic, corrupt country that changes the rules at whim.

Most of the countries closed their borders during covid. The biggest mistake Malaysia made was to change the MM2H rules and imposed those changes on older investors. I remember my neighbours purchased a house and spent more than RM300k renovating it before they had to sell. Simply because they were unable to renew their MM2H visa as they didn’t meet the new requirements. That’s a huge hit to the system credibility. My family wanted to invest recently and I advised them not to as it’s difficult to trust the system. I expect they make it easier again due to the oversupply of housing in KL, but they may change it again in the future 😅

This is a so-called affirmative action on steroids...this policy gives more preference to the Malays over those who are not..ie the ethnic Malaysian born Chinese...they receive special rates on loans and preferential status at schools in the country..hence the reason why ethnic Chinese go study abroad and never come back and the so called "brain drain" that's affecting the country...also you can't hold certain position in government because your not "ethnic Malay"...this is one of reasons I see as this country's downfall...I speak from experience...my wife is ethically Chinese Malay and I am US born Chinese...and I see the problems how this policy does affect the non Malays..

PROBLEMS. (1) Think and do your research as why MY is best for you as a resident as you cannot work or do any businesses. (2) Too much funds deposited in MY Banks with LOW interest rates compared to Singapore, HK or India. (3) MM2H is constantly revised as the Govt has NO framework or Policies that can be attractive (4) Weather is hot hot hot up to 40C and Rains, Rains as the heavens are open. (5) MY Drivers are dangerous (6) Too many workers from Bangla everywhere and public transport (7) Traffic Jams every where (8) Alcohol is expensive (9) Cost of living is up, up and up. (10) Political and Social Economic Disparities btw races. Lots of POOR people with NO Trade or Tech Skills. (11) Levels of CORRUPTION is high (12) Legal system is suspect and justice a problem. Why come to MY? Live in Florida if are a US Citizen on Social Security payments of USD3,000 per month. Philippines or Thailand if you are a bachelor

It's a minimum of $2.5 million for Australia. I don't think many people can afford that. And not to mention you only get 5 years max.
A US citizen must be careful about expatriating; if not, he will owe tax to two countries. He can move only to countries where the banks are not part of the reporting system to the US and are not likely to adopt it. Another approach would be to move where he can obtain a desirable citizenship in a short time; then renounce his US citizenship. Meanwhile, he will need tax exemption from the new country.
The grip on US citizens' wallets by the IRS will be loosened as the US dollar declines, but then the value of US savings and earnings will decline as well. If I could, I would leave US ASAP and start the clock to citizenship elsewhere. The US has very bad political leadership. It is not likely to improve soon. American citizens are the colonial slaves of the US ruling class, but they are too indoctrinated to realize it.
