    Alfa Romeo RZ review! The Alfa Romeo SZ and RZ are two of the strangest sports cars of the 1990s. Today I'm reviewing the Alfa RZ (the convertible version of the Alfa SZ) and I'll show you the quirks and features of the Alfa RZ/SZ. I'm also going to drive the Alfa Romeo RZ and show you what it's like behind the wheel of this odd car.

    I actually have an SZ coupe for the last 21 years. The reason the hot and cold heating controls are separate is that the cold does the AC. On a rainy day the windscreen mists up instantly, so you need the air conditioning on to suck the moisture out of the air, but some heat to keep you warm! BTW the SZ is way better looking IMO. Strangely the SZ and RZ shared almost no body panels in common. The SZ bonnet has fake vents on it, where the RZ is smooth, the front bumper is much lower to the ground, as are the side sills, and the RZ windscreen is smaller. @Doug DeMuro was wrong about the red / green shock buttons too - they are for the ride hight lift system - probably one of the first cars to have it, but essential on an SZ due to the ground clearance. It lifts all 4 corners and can be done whilst driving at any speed.

    • @except10n
      @except10n Před 3 lety +25

      Agreed. Doug apparently never grew up in 80s and 90s cars where you would turn up the heat and punch the Aircon to max to quickly defog the windshield. I guess it never gets foggy in California?
      The SZ and RZ were definitely prettier in their original design than in their execution. However, it also doesn't photograph well. You know that gorgeous girl you met once, and tried to take a photo of her, and they all came out wrong? That the SZ/RZ. The only way you can take a nice picture of the car, is by using a 50mmm human eye equivalent lens. Anything else, and it just bombs it.

    I like Doug's videos, but it saddens me that he doesn't do enough homework beforehand.
    The SZ/RZ was based on the Type 116 ALFETTA floor pan, a platform that existed from 1972 with the introduction of the Alfetta Sedan, until 1993 when production of the derived 75/Milano ceased. NO MENTION WHATSOEVER of the genial 50/50 weight distribution of this chassis with the rear Transaxle layout, the rear De-Dion suspension system which was perfected by alfa for this car with self-adjusting hydraulic shocks, the rear in-board brakes and composite materials used for the bodywork in this car when mostly top-end exotics had them. It's really too bad, ranting on so much about this car and not mentioning ANYTHING of the above, of a car that was considered at the time a sort of mini-super-car, bad looks or not.

    @except10n Před 3 lety +44

    Okay, I love you Doug, but I feel the point of this car is kinda missed. Also, it was mostly designed by the Fiat department, not the Alfa department, to make it even weirder. First, the SZ and RZ are based on the GTV6 platform. Same platform the 75/Milano V6 was based on eventually. This platform is revered for its genius handling, engine, weight distribution, and passionate driving character. That platform went on to win many races across touring and rally cars. Even today, you go to the Neurenberg Ring in Germany, one of the preferred cars to race there is the 75. The reason nobody talks about the SZ and RZ's great driving and handling is because, well, that is because the GTV6 and 75 were already famous for it, so why talk about a given?
    The SZ/RZ were a promotional vehicle, as brands often do, with a high price markup, intended to provide 'attention' to the brand. Just as is done with making small production run homogenized racing cars. It was never intended to be a 'serious' production model. More like a prototype in a limited production run, using an existing platform. And this shows. It was intended to be a bit of a showpiece, which improved and extended on the handling of the GTV6 in a unique and exclusive 'extra' model. That's also why it's made out of plastic instead of metal, to save weight. Also, not very successful, and the body part fitting is, because of this, awful. It's also the reason a lot of the other features on the car are what they are. It's basically a retrofit of an existing platform, purely meant for driving pleasure. Its target audience was people that would take it to the track every now and then. Or at least, use the (italian) roads that way.
    But, it did what it was intended to do, the SZ and RZ are a blast to drive. Just like the GTV6 is, but even lighter (the GTV6 is already pretty light).
    When you see the design drawings of the car, it actually looks pretty neat. I wouldn't say pretty, but cool and agressive, like an attack dog. But because they used plastic as a body material, the edges were all rounded off, completely botching that razor sharp look, into a like a fisher-price toy car bulky mess. So yes, now agreed entirely on par that the car seems to have been the result of a drunken design bet by the design team, and somehow the intern won.
    From the origin design , you can see clear styling cues there originating from Giugiaro, with the Delorean and the '80s, VW Sirocco, and taking the 'truncated butt' style to the max (which was an aerodynamics feature at the time), but it all comes together very oddly with that plastic.
    But it did stand out. And it does go like stink around corners. Like most Alfa's, that genius platform works magic when you are through windy roads or on the track. Long straight roads with traffic lights? Not going to shine there.
    Experience? Driving a GTV6 from NY to San Francisco and back. Much better at home in the hilly curvy roads of Tuscany.

      To tell the truth, the founding idea of the design is the work of Robert Opron (the father of Citroën Maserati).
      The car was a concentrate of experimental and record ideas.
      For example the shorter time from deliberation to production (the tests were conducted by making Alfa 75 imsa compete and win in the Giro d'Italia, which were actually SZ in disguise), the body was not a symple plastic body, but in MODAR, a material that, contrary to glass fiber, could be printed with variable thickness.
      The headlights were experimental Carello (and the nose today gave rise to the Tonale), many elements (for example the wing) were in carbon fiber (!).
      At 250 km / h the car is completely neutral and can be driven with 2 fingers.
      It is a car t o t a l l y o r i e n t e d towards the driver and his driving pleasure

    Doug, you’re missing a couple of vital bits of history on this car. Firstly it is based on the 75 or Milano as it was called in the USA. At the time it was designed in the ‘80’s, it was one of the quickest realisations of design to production and used composite materials that were not widely available at the time, especially in it’s class. Also in the UK at least, there was a specialist that took the Busso engine out to 3.5 litres and produced the car that Alfa always should have. I was lucky enough to work with them on the conversion of one to right hand drive, possibly the only one ever done. They all featured a De Dion transaxle with the gearbox over the back axle and inboard brakes, much like the 75/Milano, but they had coil-over dampers at the front rather than torsion bars, like the DTM touring cars. If you drove the 3.5 you would have a different opinion of this car, as with more power it was fabulous. When set up right and under hard acceleration, these had so much traction that virtually nothing could leave the line as quick, without 4 wheel drive.

    The "cold" dial is "intensity of the air conditioning compressor". Most vehicles let you have the AC compressor on with heat (to defog/defrost windows, for example.) But most cars only have "AC compressor on or off", a few have "Normal AC or MAX AC". This is the only vehicle I've ever seen that lets you dial in the PRECISE amount of AC compressor you want.

      People ask themselves now which coin to

      before jumping into conclusion i think you
      should take a look at things first. BTC price fall
      means analysts remain divided over whether
      it is entering a bear market or is just suffering
      a brief correction on the road to more record
      highs. Investors who bought early are still in

      more regardless of the current market (bulls
