1: It is necessary to know the system of needle that your machine uses which is just a number. In most cases, machines need 135 x 17 needles but use your manual to find exactly the needle system you need. Alternatively, you can also search for the needles compatible with the model of your sewing machine on google
2: I suggest a standard universal needle because it is suitable for all situations. Also known as R-point.
3: The size of your needle depends on 2 things: you want to poke the smallest hole through your material as you can but it still has to do 2 things. It still needs to fit the thread through that needle without breaking the thread and it needs to be strong enough to sew through the material without breaking. I sugest starting out with size 18, 20 and 22.
4: For the thread: 95% of the time, I use the size 92 bonded polyester - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Great video, that was so helpful for me as a new industrial machine user. Thank you
The first minute got me glued. You nailed my frustration about my industrial sewing machine needles. Thank you for sharing.
Glad I could help!
I am new to sewing and just received the Singer machine I ordered and is looking for information on the supplies I will need for it. Needles are one thing I am researching now and will be going shopping after some research. The information you give on which size needle we should be looking for have given me even more information to think about and is a big help. Thanks for sharing this information even though I won't be doing upholstery work.
“FORGET THAT, I DON’T EVEN WANNA START SEWING ANYMORE!!” My exact thoughts 🤣🤣
Haha we have all been there! Hope this helped!
Omg, the first minute of this Video was so spot on. And I am not even going for upholstery work, but want to sew my own clothes. Of course I looked up the Schmetz guide for industrial needles...never thought 10 simple pages of information can drive you completely crazy.
THANK YOU !!! Finally a great video that explains all the needle topics and a great source to purchase from. I salute you sir!
Happy it helped!!
Watched this, went to thread exchange, ordered needles and thread, it's that easy. Found your channel today, already a big help steering me in the right direction
That's so great to hear! That is exactly how I hoped this video would help!!
Great info man, I'm an embroider and just got the Sailrite LS-1 Zig-zag machine. Seems super easy to use, and rugged. I wish I had space for an industrial machine, but I will at some point. I am hoping to expand my business to upholstery and tactical gear. Adding these to worlds together seems like a sweet combo. Love watching your videos, keep it up!
Thank you so much for this video. The beginning was so funny that i ' m still laughing and the rest was very helpful.
This is fantastic, including that pointer to The Thread Exchange! Thanks so much for sharing!
Glad it helped!
Yeeessss, I am cracking up, this is sooo true!!! I love it! 😂
Wow. I work in a fabric and craft shop and I'm looking for this type of information to better help the customers. Thank you.
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY!!!! Millions of videos on CZcams and this one seems to be the only one that actually works! Thank you liked and subscribed! I believe I will be using the 92 threadOn purses and wallets but will also be using 138 so I might have to go up to the 24 I have a Juki LS 341 on order so maybe I can get everything I need before it comes in thank you
Haha! Glad you liked it! Yeah needles are really cheep. I usually have a bunch of sizes just in case.
Thank you so much for the insight and shedding a real world view on needles and thread.
Thanks for sharing. I wish I had found your channel earlier. I was so frustrated about all needles and it’s system.
another good video keep it coming you r helping a lot of people thanks mark h
I see myself referencing this video again. Thank you!
This is a great video, really helped me. Thank you for this.
Absolutely GREAT video! Great job!
Thank you ! Im glad it helped!
OMG...this was the BEST video on needles. I’m waiting for my industrial machine to be delivered and I’m soooo intimidated already.....correction: was! The Thread Exchange example was very helpful! I’m going to be 70 this year and with COVID running rampant want to expand my bag making options for sanity! I also want to recover some outdoor cushions so this was very helpful. Do you have any videos on this subject? Thank you!
After looking this video i searched my machine and found it!!!!!!
And same needle systeem as the Consew 230.
DBx1 1738A......
You are the best.......THX
Now i only have to find a manual.
Great video. Needle safety is one that I am glad I learned early or I would have lost an eye.
Best ever video!!!! Lucky I found it. Thanks so much
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Wow, very concise and informative video..thanks for the knowledge!
Thank you!!
Thanks for taking the time, that was helpful.
Really Glad it helped!!
Thanks your information helps a lot I am a beginner so always learning
this was so helpful. thank you!
Excellent explanation, makes it so easy, thanks
good basic info. i find testing thread/needle compatibility by letting the needle slide along a length of thread is an excellent and very quick & easy method, pretty foolproof. also worth pointing out that different needle points have an effect on stitch appearance, so it isn't solely about the type of fabric. round point (R) create slightly diagonal stitches.
GREAT stuff! Thanks lucky needle!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video!
excellent video - very informative - most helpful.
Thank you!!
Damn, he's just a child. He's so smart, I'm impressed. I had to hunt for this information on my own. It didn't occur to me that this is on video. This CZcams stuff is pretty good
Thanks!
It sure is
Look up anything you want to.
The trick is knowing what keyword's to use. 👍
Many thanks, you clarified many things
Thanks very much, really learn a lot form your video. helpful and clear.
Thanks for this- there aren't that many dealers who know about this stuff or who really can't explain it well enough. Manuals are faff too
glad it helped!
Great video , thankyou this answered many questions . Cheers from OZ
Glad it helped!!
Kudos to you mate!
Thanks. Recommend the thread exchange. 👍😉
I've loved this video, your beginning intro was like you in my brain.
Haha! I'm glad you liked the intro!!!
thanks ... great tips..so helpful.
Thanks a bunch, it was a great help. :-)
My commercial sewing machine keeps breaking the thread or locks up the machine when I back stitch. I have tried everything to adjust tension, new needle, different #92 thread etc... Any suggestions? We love your videos and thank you for your knowledge!
hey John, thanks for this informative video. ....so if the first number represents the needle width (135 + 1.35 mm?) what is the number after the slash...gauge size like in wire, so the higher the number, the finer the needle?
Great video thank you.
Hi, great video, do you know what this thread is called in the UK please. Thank you
🤣🤣🤣that was funny and yes I used get frustrated myself and you just nailed it. Tqsm 😍😍
The size of thread and there's also adjustments to the machine itself.
Yeees lolol I am cracking up! I love it. Sooooo true!!!!
Thanks bro 🙏 🙌 💯
Supa! Thanks a million!
The really best shape point For the leather is "LR"
HI i purchased your videos and they are awesome! My question is how do I know when my needle is getting worn out or should I just replace the needle before every big job? I do marine seats and tops.
That's a great question. Haha personally I probably wait far to long that I should to change needles. Usually when I have any problem with thread fraying or breaking the first thing I do is change the needle. Its a better idea to change needles every few jobs or so. They are so cheep that if you remember to change it just change. The problem is I never remember until it gives me problems. You'll be surprised how long they will last.
Glad you like the videos!!
Love from philippines ❤️
Many thanks. Question: Can needles be sharpened at home ? I'm not a cheap ass, but on a Sunday night, , , or any night, in the middle of the night, if things start to get dull, can needles be touched up to perfect condition . . . .I've been sharpening knives for over 50 years, and have a full range of stones, including Arkansas stones (of course), and black surgical stones.
Great video. What size of needle & needle point do you recommend for sewing 600D polyester fabric with PVC backing & stitching it together with V-69 polyester bonded thread? Thank you!
17or 18 should be fine but you could go smaller if your worried about hole size. You just run more of a risk breaking your needle the smaller you go.
Great Information! I've been using 69 nylon thread with my Sailrite LS-1 for my auto and restaurant upholstery. Should I change to Polyester? I just want to make sure the jobs I do last for my customers. Thanks
Thanks!!
I would strongly recommend switching to UV bonded Polyester for the automotive work and any outdoor furniture. . Nylon doesn't hold up as well to UV. You should be ok with size 69. I like 92 because it seems to be the most available in the most colors at the stores. Also I love pre wound bobbins and those are usually in 92.
what size needles and threads do you recommend for different size "weight" of auto upholstery leather including decorative top stitching?
I have never seen automotive leather available in different weights. Leather that comes in weights is typically meant for other things like belts and saddles. With automotive leather I use size 92 for all the base seams. If i want to do some decorative stitches I will still use 92 in the bobbin and use a thicker thread on top. The needle size will depend on how thick the thread is. This size chart is a good start. www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=TTE&Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=needle-size-chart
How do you like using your LU-562 compared to the Sailrite? Also, do you find the G bobbin limiting on the Juki? Keep up the good videos, best wishes. Thanks, Anthony.
I prefer the lu-562. Mostly because Ive been using it for so long. I dont find the G bobbin limiting at all. You just need to keep an eye on it more often.
Thanks!
I'm learning my basics on a vintage 1960s Pfaff 362 Automatic. Needle system is 130 R/705-H, sizes 65/9~122/20. I have a 130R 120/19 with #24 thread. What are the domestic thread sizes I am limited to as I practice on light vinyl or medium Denim & sail cloth?
Honestly Dean, I'm not familiar with domestic needles and thread. I sure you can run size 92 bonded polyester on your machine. Just find a needle that is big enough to fit the thread through. You can buy one of these thread stands on amazon to hold the larger spools. amzn.to/2OxUzcZ
What size thread would I use if I'm sewing black vinyl to make my red (thread showing) pop out, want to do a double stitch.
use 92 for your base seam and use sizes 210 to 270 for the top stitch depending on how thick you want the thread to be. 210 will be like what you see in European sports cars and 270 will be like a baseball stitch
Your thought on the Juki 1541S as you mentioned in your video. We have a Juki dealer near us so we are going that route. However I been watching the Sailrite vids & looking at the Fabricator & am impressed with the machine. I just wish that their was a dealer that supported the sailrite machines.
Your Thoughts!!!
Thanks
If the 1541s is in your budget I would get that. Its a better machine.
@@Theluckyneedle Yeah, That's the one we are going with. Primarily because of the local dealer. Glad to hear. Thanks. Subscribed...
Good info! I have a new-to-me Adler 167 triple feed machine. The manual says System 134. I'm guessing there's a difference between the System 135 and 134. Can you help me there? Thx
System 134 (R) is generally used in single needle lockstitch industrial sewing machines. It is also known as 135x5, 135x7, 135x25, 1901, DPx5, and DPx7.
Do you have any information on using the heavy contrast thread and correct needles ? Thank you for the great videos.
Yeah for that you'll need a size 24 or 26 needle. I usually only use the contrast thread on the top thread and then use normal size 92 thread in the bobbin. Set the thread tension tighter on the bobbin so you cant see it from the top. I will do a video on this in the feature! hope that helps!
Hello, Thanks for the information, I have been in the restoration and upholstery bizz for 40 years and learn something new every day. I also enjoy watching your videos when I can, Keep up the Great Work !
Do you find there is enough work space between the needle and the body of the machine is sufficient for working on cars. How high is it the opening? I noticed on their promotional video when the stitch was going from thicker fabric to thinner it seemed that the thread sort of dragged down. I think it would like nicer if that stitch came down closer the the edge of the thick fabric. What is the typical stitch length used for car interiors. Thank you.
Yes the needle and foot lift is sufficent. It is also adjustable for different thicknesses. Typical stitch length for all basic seams is 1/8". For decorative top stitches it varies depending on the look you are going for and thread thickness.
Thanks 👏
Hi! Hope you reply to inquiries on here. I have a Juki 1508 with a size 18 needle. I’m sewing on thick canvas where I roll the edge to get a nice clean seam but my needle might be too big because it’s creating an explosion in each hole on the back of the fabric. That’s the only way I can explain it. It looks like the needle came through but also pushed through the insides and it looks like a mini explosion in each hole it creates. Is it my needle that’s too big? Or my tension too tight? If I loosen the tension, the bottom thread lays flat against the back of the fabric. I can’t figure out the right balance. The tension is actually on the tighter end.
I cant really help with out seeing a picture. Please post a picture on www.theupholsteryforum.com
What style needle are you using. They do make needles specifically for canvas.
Is the DI the DH or the D at The Thread Exchange, as they don't have one called DI. Thanks
I use a needle manufacturer website like Groz-Beckert and Schmetz for industrial sewing machine needles. They have needles for everything.
The 4 spools of thread (No needles) that came with a used Juki DDL-5550 has "TEX 60" on the spool bottoms. No info as shown. What is that and how does one judge its' size? I have bought 137-19 and sews fine thru 1.2m - 1.4m auto leather.
Here is some information on the different thread sizes
www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Store_Code=TTE&Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=needle-size-chart
I have a singer 31-47 and it says it uses a (needle system,class/variety) 16 x 113 needle and I cannot find them anywhere any help????
Look up Groz-Beckert - 16x63
They have your needle system.
I use sunbrella fabric. I sew a tarpaulin for the boat. But when it rains, water drips from the sewing holes. I wonder which needle and which thread should I use.
You need to deal the sewing holes on back of fabric with a waterproof glue.Thats the only way you can waterproof any outdoor material. Because your making holes every time your needle makes a stitch. Hope that helps.
Hey hows its going? Can a size 18 go through 8-10 oz leather easily?
I dont ever use that type of leather that is measured in oz. I suggest buying multiple sizes and seeing what works best for your specific project.
We have a Mercury M141 and I can not find out what size needle it uses, I also can not find a manual for it
Thethreadexchange.com has the option to look up the needle system by machine.
Check here for your manual. www.freesewingmachinemanuals.com/
hope this helps.
What size needle do you use for velvet material
Universal
Is this model still available new?
Model of what exactly?
Thanks for educating us and give us that website www.thethreadexchange. I now can finally understand needle sizes.
Happy to help!
Where are 140 22 needles???
👍
ha weres your juki is it for sale mark
Haha. No I still have it and use it often.
ok thanks keep the video up mark h
is poly and bonded poly the same..
Great Question!
No, the bonding process of the thread adds many positive features to the thread. Most importantly the it gives it the UV resistance.
cool.. the thread exchange did not seem to have much of a selection. i ordered from Superior Threads.. they had a great selection .. bwt.. best video on needles.. you should do one on threads
Thanks!! Really glad it helped. That's a great idea. I did one on thread a while back but maybe its time for a better one!
@@Theluckyneedle , great vid.
I asked a question about size - doing a vinyl with double stitch, want to make my red pop, how big of a thread size, what type of thread. It's a car upholstery, on a convertible in Texas. So has to be fade resistant.
"FORGET THIS...I don't even want to start sewing anymore!" I say this 5 minutes after I start and every 5 minutes thereafter.
Gr8 intro..lol
Bless you, brother cause this ain't fun.
Hahahaha ❤
The needle sizing system is a joke and needs to be overhauled. Endless weird numbers from different manufactures that may or may not be the same...different shank size in the same system, etc.
