In another installment of Scientific Anglers throw back film series we look back at The way of the Trout from Trout Unlimited which was originally aired on public television in 1969.
My 1978 9th grade Biology and fishing club teacher played this as a science class lesson. It was TU's mission to educate on catch and release and it worked for me as I also took up flyfishing and tying that same year. What a splendid production and videography!
So good. Would be awesome if fishing videos were still made like this. They've been getting loud , obnoxious, and skin-crawlingly trendy as of late. This was very enjoyable
This film and other of these old beautifully directed trout and flyfishing films is what made flyfishing magic to me. And i know to so many others. Being 55 already, so you know i was still "young" around my 30's when i picked up a flyrod again. But this time i was so dedicated to learn to cast, tying flies in the evenings with these films on VHS video tapes playing at the background. Fishing every water possible in Holland while others joked about me out load. "Did you catch a salmon yet, whaha" . Was the usualcomment.(we have little to hardly no trout at all here for over 120 years) I didnt care, Especially when i got better in this more than a hobby thing. Like in a cold winter, Going to a side stream coming out of the river Rijn (Rhine in english) one of my favorite spots. While being surrounded by a conventional fish club having a match day. Again hearing them laughing at my weird Fly fishing abracadabra for them. Mocking me. Until i began landing the biggest Chubs, Carp, Asp, while all they caught were merely small fry. Lol. At that point i decided to fish in my ancestors land: Norway. And all the long evenings after work practicing casting behind a Flat ,on grass payed off ! Magic is still the feeling and experience i have when i fool a fish with my own tyes. More so in countries where there is still a natural trout and salmon population. All due this sort of films , and my obsession about trout, Greyling, and Salmon on the fly. Thanks for uploading this 👍🏻
Looks like a great combination of an aquarium and the Catskills, maybe Pennsylvania, somewhere east a long time ago. That’s my guess. I’m no expert but I’m old now.

Good to use barbless hooks...my neighbor showed me how to crush the barb on regular hooks.
Thanks for sharing!
I appreciate your putting up the majority of the old Mastery series videos, so much nostalgia value here for the Gen X angler.
So much fun bringing these back!
A timeless piece of film. His fall, we’ve seen and done many times 🥺😀🙈
We've have all done the mid stream dance at one point!
Reminiscent of my late dad, and his time of youth. Thanks a lot! 👍👍🙂🎣

Its hard to say, we have done some research and not been able to determine location for this film.
