Byleth's recovery is why I am assuming we saw him here. Basemage is so good
Yeah makes it way more difficult then normal for Puff to get his early off stage kills. Bonus that Byleth can actually punish Puff offstage with his UP B like he did in that one stick when BassMage overcommitted
Yeah byleth was 1000% the best pick here. One of the best recoveries in the game, one of the hardest rest punishes in the game, and typical big and safe swordie moves make it tricky for puff to do puff things (though I don't think the matchup is free)
@@citrus5797 agreed, I would even consider this MU on Byleths favour. A decent Byleth spacing can make it impossible for puff. Plus one Nair to dsmash can break puffs shield if held just a bit too long.

A lot of people have something that I like to call "elite smash bias", where sword characters overestimate their ability to beat Jigglypuff because they fight bad puffs online and are able to swat away their predictable approaches every single time.
Don't get me wrong, Jigglypuff generally does worse against swordies than any other archetype, but she doesn't lose to every single one.
I think puff goes even with Byleth simply because of how goddamn slow Byleth is, especially in the air. His recovery, while great, is still a tether recovery and can be gimped. Also, the shieldbreak setup you mentioned is relatively niche and easy to play around, and a smart puff can be surprisingly hard for Byleth to hit.

Im my statement I did not mean to add people who do compete in the game, you’re absolutely correct with that biased I took. It’s just from my personal experience with low level puffs and friends I play with (I’m the biggest fan of smash in my friend group lmao). God damn but honestly it’s so nice to have a conversation here in CZcams, people are so much more civilized than any other SM platform
For those wondering about EE's mistaken intel about Leo being in losers (0:05),
it was probably him (or chat) confusing MKLeo with Lea, who coincidentally,
is also the player who got upset by NaetorU (1:08) that EE couldn't quite name off the top of his head in the same conversation.

This is an absolute win for Bassmage. This matchup is nearly impossible to win. And yet he was able to get close every match against MKLeo! Even taking a game! Well done to both players.
bassmage says its a winning matchup for puff btw. and i cant really argue, byleth is so slow and puff can get in so easily with how slow their attacks are, and they are very edgegaurdable. byleth is combo food for puff, and none of byleths options work out of sheild against puffs downair driftback.

I am absolutely loving how both of these players are pushing boundaries of their characters. Leo is very creatively spamming and cancelling moves in order to present as little openings as possible for Bassmage to strike, whereas Bassmage himself's punishing gameplay is utterly satisfying to watch.

Every game except game 4 coulda gone Bassmage's way. I hope he keeps it up and gets his break through soon. I would think Byleth must be a tough match up for Jigglypuff but Bassmage made it look doable, against the best Byleth in the world, of all people. What an amazing Jigglypuff player.
It's not that bad. Both players think the MU is even, Leo is just a way better player.
No puff beats byleth's crappy frame data when cornered. The only way Byleth can hit puff is he reads puffs movement and retreats now and then, this retreating will lead to him being cornered (upair->rest，fthrow->gimp, air combos). MkLeo can read players movement unlike any other player so his attacks will actually hit.

probably a combination of nerves + not fully believing in the read. there's sure to be a lot of pressure when going up against the #1 player
If he missed the read and went for sing or rest, he would have literally died. If he missed the up tilt read, he would not have even gotten punished. Use your head

Commentators were acting very foolish game 2. Leo was in control almost immediately after he lost his first stock and kept the momentum the rest of the game but they didn't catch on until he had brought it all the way back.

Game 2 FD is proof how a stage can carry a character like puff,L.Mac and Kazuya and the shotos and also how sword characters typically are better on bigger stages with platforms but eh slow characters are always able to clutch things cuz their playstyle gets you to slow down and think about what you need to do to get to the finish line

Why didn’t bassmage use puffs 2 best moves once? Rest and sing. Sing could’ve been used sooooo many times. Especially when you condition your opponent into thinking it’s a neutral fight
Cuz’ they’re not, it’s def like nair and dash attack or forward throw
Its dair and f throw, also sing is a very shitty move.
Also bass doesn't use rest because its risky and he'd rather outplay the opponent
Because if you don't have a guaranteed setup, a player like Leo will easily capitalize and take the stock.

What could have been a really fun set sort of just devolved into leo not approching and spamming dtilt to catch approach and bassmage kept falling for it

Unlike what the commentators said, I'm very sure that at 94% Jigglypuff would defo have died with an up-air. I think he went for the up-B to just to flex. MKLeo is just too strong...
Props to Bassmage. I wonder how much more he can push Jiggly meta. He might be ok being best Puff in world. Imo, I think Bass needs to pick up a character that's more viable in competitive play if his ambition is to defeat best of the best in a consistent manner. Otherwise, Bassmage is destined to be perennial contender and gatekeeper. I'm not trying to be dismissive of Bass's accomplishment. I really think he can be more than best Puff. He has potential to be one of the best players in Smash but by sticking with Puff his journey is gonna be cut short. Best of Luck, Bassmage. Keep up the hard work.
Bassmage is very good and has impressed. Jigglypuff had insane combos and can edge guard amazing but she get held back by projectiles, range and dies so early. She also dies if her shield breaks. Those are huge disadvantages that outweighs her advantages. Her placement is lower mid to mid
