  • In which Larue talks about Challengers.
Is this a review? A video essay? I don't know!
My advice? Send this to the film bro you matched with on Hinge to start a healthy conversation :)

very light spoilers but i forgot to mention that scene where Patrick reunites w Art at the Stanford court and starts chasing him around. All the guys there start smilin and gigglin cause even though they don't know this guy, they know a *true* bond between two homies when they see it. something joyous about watching a man playfully attack another man.
    Dudes rock...

What you said about being unsure if you can laugh is so true!
I watched this for the first time at a preview a couple of days before the premiere. Several times my friend and I would both laugh, while the rest of the theatre remained dead quiet throughout. It was a strange viewing experience, but I really enjoyed the movie!

I actually think that Zendaya's perfomances in Malcolm & Marie and Euphoria are her best (S1E7, the bridge episode and S2E5&6 in particular). This one is fun and I really liked her scenes with O'Connor in particular

Fair, I haven't seen those! I don't dislike her, just kinda bored of her characters in Spiderman and Dune.

loved this movie, loved your review! the intro and your editing is great. I agree with you both on the underrated comedic greatness and also the magnitude of Josh O’Connor’s performance.

The original script had more of Art and Tashi’s relationship and it is quite disappointing we didn’t get much of it but I would say that their relationship is intimate in comparison to Patrick’s relationship with Tashi (which is passionate). I say intimate because of the bedroom scene it is soft in a way and when she says to him “does that help you?” After telling him she’d leave him, she was trying to motivate him. I thought it was interesting but I do think their marriage is stagnant, maybe if we saw of them dating (but then again that would make the film longer and this movie is filled with drama at all times).
As for the moans 😂 I think that was purposeful so bear with me. Tashi is the tennis ball being tossed around back and forth between the two guys. She takes turn with both of them in the film. In the first set of the challengers 2019 match, Patrick wins so in the past he gets to date Tashi first. Art wins the second set in 2019, so he gets to marry Tashi. In the third set we don’t have a winner because the film ends but you can tell that all three of them are satisfied and happy after having their little threesome (tennis is a relationship) . Patrick and Art’s grunts are the moans and Tashi screaming “come on” is the climax. To add to my interpretation of the film, my friend told me that Art’s technique at the end before he fell onto Patrick’s arms is called “Smash” (very convenient lmao 😂) and in many ways calls back to their hotel room three way make out.
