The story behind this song is very tragic. It touches my heart, though. The lyrics to this song were written by a talented young Motown lyricist named Rodger Penzabene. He also wrote lyrics for Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye, as well as the Temptations. While working on this album, Rodger found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Rodger was in a bad place. he couldn't stand the pain, but he couldn't stop loving his wife either. He literally poured his heart, soul, and pain into this song. It was released on December 21, 1967 and went on to become one of The Temptations greatest hits but Rodger never saw that. At 23, Rodger Penzabene took his own life on New Years Eve, 1967. He never got to see that so many people could relate to his pain and heart ache. Rest easy, Rodger, some of us remember you.

But my goodness David Ruffin was just absolutely incredible. He doesn’t get anywhere near the praise he deserves.

Rodger Penzabene (1945 - December 31, 1967) was an American songwriter for the Motown label. Among his most notable compositions as a lyricist are "Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me" by Gladys Knight & the Pips; "The End of Our Road" by Gladys Knight & the Pips and Marvin Gaye; and a trilogy of hits for The Temptations: "You're My Everything", "I Wish It Would Rain", and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". Penzabene was of Sicilian and Irish descent. He attended Mumford High School in Detroit, Michigan. He was a childhood friend and neighbor of Cornelius Grant, with whom he wrote "You're My Everything". After Grant became musical director for the Temptations, Penzabene continued to contribute songs for the group, and for other Motown acts. The mournful songs "I Wish It Would Rain" and "I Could Never Love Another" reportedly drew from Penzabene's real-life pain and suffering. Otis Williams wrote that: "We liked Roger a lot. He was young, nice-looking, but kind of quiet and reserved, and very humble. The inspiration for these great songs was his unhappy personal life." On New Year's Eve 1967, a week after the release of "I Wish It Would Rain", Penzabene committed suicide by gunshot at the age of 22.
Ruffin is rightly praised for his soulful shouts, but his masterful falsetto here really lets the pain shine through. Not even Eddie Kendrick could have done it better.
This song was written for the Temps by a 23year old man. His wife left him and he committed suicide shortly afterwards. Very sad, but this is how he felt. Beautiful song, but , my son loves it because he said it's a song that gives a man permission to cry. Society has conditioned men to be strong and not to express their feelings.
The story of Roger Penzabine who wrote this song makes it hit so much harder when I listen to it. I always thought it was a beautiful song and it evoked strong emotions.. I only found out recently the songwriter took his life a week after the song was released.
Wow. Never knew that. That is sad. Wikipedia entry: Lyricist Penzabene had just found out his wife was cheating on him with another man. Unable to deal with the pain and unable to stop loving his wife, Penzabene expressed his pain in the lyrics of this song and its follow-up on the Temptations' release schedule, "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". The distraught Penzabene committed suicide on New Year's Eve 1967, a week after the single's release.

The Temptations are one of the greatest music groups of all time. It's a damn shame that the newer generations have never heard of some these amazing classics.
You would think that if the now generation could stop and listen to classic hits like this one...for them it would be like hearing it for the first time and they would either not like it or fall in love with it. Im 66 years old and i know when i first heard a song being played on the radio back in the mid 60s ...the DJ would spin a new record...you hear it,and know deep down inside it was gonna be big hit. So many songs that were being heard for the first time. Then some would leave the charts, and you might hear again when the DJ would flash back to a date when it was in rotation and play it again, and i would say " I remember that song, what a great song that was.all the memories would come back to you as to what was going on in your life when you first heard it. That magic does not exist in todays music.
The writer Rodger Penzabene penned this melancholic classic, as a result of his wife's infidelity. Sadly, he committed suicide in December 1967 and never got to hear about its' massive success. The music recorded during our time was profound,as are those still alive to witness how much the human heart has changed. Yet we still persiver. We were born during a time when the world was broken. And we just as this song will stand the testament of time.
One of the Temptations' finest songs, to be sure. Rest in peace Paul Williams (1939-1973), David Ruffin (1941-1991), Eddie Kendricks (1939-1992), and Melvin Franklin (1942-1995). Gone, but not forgotten!

Thank you so much .. I've been trying to classify this genre for pandora and I didn't know if it was funk, soul or oldies .. I had it on the tip of my tongue the whole time .. Motown!!!!!!
DenaL112 Not just your people I grew up listening to Motown and still do. You should clarify this to be "Our time" or our generation but not make it sound racial. We have enough of that stuff going on these days without music being more involved especially the sweet sweet sound of Motown.
Reinaldo Green x. There are No DISLIKERS....just the uninformed, unintroduced, and uninterested (????) Temptations set a Bar too high and that's a fact.
I was born in late '66. I was exposed to all of this spectacular music. I'm tearing up writing this and thanking god for the people who wrote, sang, and played the songs of this era.
Once in a lifetime if your lucky somebody writes a song so truthful you cant help but get that lump in your throat because you been right through what that song is saying.
This Song is definitely a Classic ❤️😍❤️ I don't care how many times I hear it, I still get chills and I Cry because you can hear and feel the pain in this song. David Ruffin really did bring out what Roger felt at that moment. RIP Rodger Penzabene ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm 13 and almost every time I listen to this song I cry. This is real music I know that. You can't compare this song to the shit on the radio. These guys really made some good music. Rest in peace to the guy that wrote this beautiful song. There are young people that still listen to this kind of music.
+Gary Villeda I'm hearing the younger generation say that more and more. I grew up in that era and to me the 70's will always be the best decade of music. Thanks Gary.
+Kelly Doub i wish i couldve lived through those days.. the looked like they were awesome! better than todays world since we all have phones and are non social
One of the songs that I decided to start my day with this morning. Helping to drop my son to college and I needed something that to help me get by. A VERY happy day today but a VERY sad one as well. Time pass by SO fast. Be safe and be well.
I pray that someday that music like this will return. It had a true feeling of love, hurt and pain all rolled into one. Take the time to listen to the words of these classic songs and you will understand that it was truly a music for not only a generation but for everyone. The Motown Sound will live forever.
I don't know if this kind of music can ever come back. Our kids and their kids are to jaded in this world now. I can't find anyone that can put this kind of emotion in a song and make you feel it like they did back in the day. I wish we could get back there but I just don't know.
Heard this in the movie, Four Brothers when I was a little kid, watching it with my older brother. Fell in love with this sound, and the rest of the soundtrack, instantly. Reminds me of family and friends that passed. Makes me ball my eyes out. I wish this kind of music was still produced today.
me and my friend said that line everyday. all those tickets sold, not one person paid for Otis the leader sung no hits. he even made the announcements at the show, then stepped back into the backround. lol
Otis Williams was the least known and the least charismatic of the group; but he was the heart and soul of it. Were it not for him, The Temptations would probably have disbanded, like many other groups, long ago. Ruffin, apparently, thought he was the lone star, and therefore, indispensable. He was wrong. Fans came to see and hear the group, not just one man. The Temps had more hits without Ruffin than they did with him.
Thank you, Linda Maddox!!!! I love David Ruffin; He was an awesome lead singer and performer; but, I love the Temptations more, Otis Williams included.
The Motown, Chess & STAX years were an incredible time to be alive. It helped thousands of young men endure their time spent in Vietnam, making it a little less miserable. Thank God for these fantastic, talented artists.
This song is pure genius! The seagulls, the lyrics, the violins and the harmonizing . How is it possible people would conceivably give this a thumbs down. One of the most iconic and played songs of classic rock and roll.
I'm attempting this song. And I can tell you that going from the lowest note to the highest ain't something everybody can do. David Ruffin was blessed with a church of an angel. That raspy and pure sounding falsetto thing he does with the Ooooh. What the hell. No wonder he was a devil with the women. It must have come too easy to him. His dad, the minister, must have been as proud as he was troubled by David. RIP
Complimentary words towards our women, instead of hearing degrading words about our women. Just really sit back and listen to the words of this song. That's some true love for a woman.
I'm listening to this song on Saturday morning on March 30th and thinking of my mom and dad 😢. They passed over 15 years ago and I think of them EVERY day. I miss them so freaking much, sometimes it physically hurts. But I know know how much they loved me so I AM blessed. That's what I think of when I hear this song. The good and the sad. Love yall LaCurtis and Berniece.❤❤
David Ruffin tore this track apart man what a great voice he had such soulful sound singing from the heart and soul so much meaning behind his words can we please get out music back this generation is terrible;
Wow, who could have imagined that 1968 was so long ago, it all seems like yesterday!😢 We were young, innocent and had our whole life ahead of us! To all those amazing memories and days we thought would last forever!❤
on the way to Italy while in the military, had a stop over in barcelona spain. it was christmas eve and it was rainning hard. I had just broken up with my girl few days earlier. I could'nt stand the emptiness in my room so I went down to the club and this song was playin on the jukebox. I sat in the corner by the window and pretending to watch the rain but, instead I was watchin my tears rollin down my face. I missed her so much and I could'nt overcome the despair of loneliness..the rain will conceal your tears of pain as it's cleansing your bleeding heart.
the temptations have a ton of great songs under their belt, but this one is FAR above the rest. this will turn into a counseling session if i break down this song tonight....its just a great song that anyone that has gone through a break-up can understand without having to ask a single question.
My late son's favorite song of all time... Miss him dearly, every day. He was only 32 when he passed. He definitely had an old soul she loved the temptations if that was definitely his favorite song ever since he was a baby.. ☔☔☔
I first heard this song when I was in transit to Fort Riley, Kansas on December 30, 1967. My fiancé had just broken our engagement as she could not handle' me being in the Army and being deployed to Vietnam. To say this song matched my mood at the time would be an understatement. The lyrics are still appropriate today.
I went to a boarding school for kids from broken homes; Greer School. I was 9 yo...Motown is still my favorite music. I knew about the Beatles, etc., but Motown was the coolest. Did The Monkey, The Swim, The Jerk, Boogaloo, Cool Jerk, Funky Broadway...GOOD TIMES...!!!!
There's just something about David Ruffinns voice that I really love this song is just another reason why I love the temptations,, and there's no better than the original members..

DenaL112 Not just your people I grew up listening to Motown and still do. You should clarify this to be "Our time" or our generation but not make it sound racial. We have enough of that stuff going on these days without music being more involved especially the sweet sweet sound of Motown.
DECEMBER 1967 AND THE LATE GREAT DAVID RUFFIN ON LEAD.. THE DISLIKERS DON'T KNOW MUSIC AND TALENT!! TEMPTATIONS FOREVER!!
Reinaldo Green Temptations Forever
Reinaldo Green miss those years. Best music
I was 13. I consider myself so lucky to be around during these times. Great music everywhere especially Barry Gordy and these great songs
The greatest of all time.
Reinaldo Green x. There are No DISLIKERS....just the uninformed, unintroduced, and uninterested (????) Temptations set a Bar too high and that's a fact.
I listened to this song on repeat when my grandpa died. It will always hold a dear place deep within me.
My Heartfelt Condolences
RIP to the guys in this group that passed away this band is good stuff , timeless good in any era
I was born in late '66. I was exposed to all of this spectacular music. I'm tearing up writing this and thanking god for the people who wrote, sang, and played the songs of this era.

David Ruffin. Pure soul. arguably one of the best singers of all time. By the way, Great song.
Once in a lifetime if your lucky somebody writes a song so truthful you cant help but get that lump in your throat because you been right through what that song is saying.
Motown Music will stand the test of Time and beyond!
Yasssss
Let the church say Amen
My best memories!!!😎
I'm 35 and the people my age look at me like I'm weird bc all I listen to is 60's/70's music . Old soul i suppose :) clean happy music :)
The Best Thing About a Great Song is 150yrs From Now it Will Still Be a Classic.
David Ruffin had a beautiful voice...He was in a class of his own...Can't nobody touch Mr.Ruffin...
I'm 13 and almost every time I listen to this song I cry. This is real music I know that. You can't compare this song to the shit on the radio. These guys really made some good music. Rest in peace to the guy that wrote this beautiful song. There are young people that still listen to this kind of music.
Rain drops will hide my tear drops 💔 rest in paradise my love my dad. Thanks for showing me these songs
In two days, 2023 will be here, still listening to the best music ever. Memories rolling down my 70 yr old cheeks. Wishing the best for our world.
Beautiful song 🤍Hello from Scotland🏴How are you doing today? I hope it's been a great year so far?
This was one of my dads favorite songs, he left us last night to join my mom and our Lord and saviour. I miss you and love you so much dad 😭
My Heartfelt Condolences to You and Your Family.
no matter how old this song is or gets it'll never be too old to listen to love this song!!!!!!!
im 19 years old and i love the oldies.. Its just so much better than todays music.
+Kelly Doub iam 23 well I will be on the 25 lol I love this music
Gary Villeda
Same here it really helps to listen to this music when ur sad I just love it
Great song live, Man they can sing & perform. Hell of a show !
I wish we could get back there but I just don't know.
its gonna come back! if it kills me it will come back
Tom Sevart never a gain
Jasper Scott never it's the 60s the best music ever in life
tom great comment ,only one thing to do with this song , CRANK IT UP
Never forgotten. The supreme male vocal group singing a wonderful song...
Heard this in the movie, Four Brothers when I was a little kid, watching it with my older brother. Fell in love with this sound, and the rest of the soundtrack, instantly. Reminds me of family and friends that passed. Makes me ball my eyes out. I wish this kind of music was still produced today.
That’s a good movie!!
I remember it being in Men of Honor and really falling in love with it then 😊
Absolutely love this song. Especially on a rainy day ❤
David murdered this song , I felt this shit stg 😩
You know it man for 2020 and beyond
My mama use to play this when aunt come over also granny and my fathers
He also SANG 2 his girl.
At least once a week, I say to someone, "Ain't nobody coming to see you Otis..." Best line of the movie LOL.
me and my friend said that line everyday.
all those tickets sold, not one person paid for Otis
the leader sung no hits.
he even made the announcements at the show, then stepped back into the backround. lol
John Webb
And he wasn't even the 'leader'. Had to make himself important I guess.
How is it possible people would conceivably give this a
thumbs down. One of the most iconic and played songs of classic
rock and roll.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite song by The Temptations. The magnificent harmonies are outdone...only by the fabulous voice of David Ruffin...
Judy Jae mine too this song is soo beautiful
@@josemartinez-nl8dn Yes it is, Jose. Glad you agree:)
Love it so much
This 62 year old white boy here diesel mechanic I give 10 thumbs-up always on the Temptations
Hope you’re getting ready to retire soon my stranger friend.
You might like Springsteen's recent cover.
I lost my mom and this song is the way i felt and still feel . every day , i wish it would rain.
Me too
The pain, the soul, this is how you SANG
💔🕊✝🙏🏼RIP DAVID RUFFIN, YOUR VOICE IS LEGENDARY FOR EVERMORE💯🎤
One of the best Groups We ever had/R.I.P. The Members that are no longer with Us.
RIP Paul, David, Eddie & Melvin. Yall were some of the best performers ever. Tempting Temptations! 💜 ya.
David Ruffin tore this track apart man what a great voice he had such soulful sound singing from the heart and soul so much meaning behind his words can we please get out music back this generation is terrible;
I feel you when you get time listen Roy C If I can love you forever,
Wow, who could have imagined that 1968 was so long ago, it all seems like yesterday!😢
We were young, innocent and had our whole life ahead of us!
To all those amazing memories and days we thought would last forever!❤
There are some songs you hear and you just *feel* every word. RIP Rodger
Perfect song: mood, infliction, melody, voices, D Ruffin doing his thing. Beautiful, masters. 🎧🎤
on the way to Italy while in the military, had a stop over in barcelona spain. it was christmas eve and it was rainning hard.
+darkmoon69ful damn that had to been hard
wow so deep
Bruh that's poetic as fuck though...
Very nice description. I was there with you on that one.
darkmoon69ful
the temptations have a ton of great songs under their belt, but this one is FAR above the rest. this will turn into a counseling session if i break down this song tonight....its just a great song that anyone that has gone through a break-up can understand without having to ask a single question.
This record is off the scale, absolutely brilliant the lyrics, vocals, One of David's best vocal performances in their absolute prime here the Temps❤
How many times has this song touch your heart over the years people?
more times than i'd like to admit
My late son's favorite song of all time... Miss him dearly, every day. He was only 32 when he passed. He definitely had an old soul she loved the temptations if that was definitely his favorite song ever since he was a baby.. ☔☔☔
My Heartfelt Condolences to You and Your Family.
This song makes me cry but I love it so much!
Love this song. It remind`s me of the time when I broke up with my first love. I still think of her to this day.
Damn, man....Im in that same predicament good sir
I do too Robert
You can never completely forget anyone that you loved. A piece of them remains in your heart forever.
Powerful lyrics. My favorite Temps song ❤️
There's just something about David Ruffinns voice that I really love this song is just another reason why I love the temptations,, and there's no better than the original members..
