Her perfect sense of timing is used to the max when singing the jazzy way. I am awed by it, especially when she comes in after a jazz instrument interlude and there’s no definite beat or phrase to indicate when she should come back in, but she always knows exactly when! Innate sense of timing!

I figured you would like this one, most people overlook it, but I think it is one of her best. Because of the timing of this performance, within weeks of her win on NGT, I’ve thought that she prepared this song for NGT, but chose “Summertime” for the finals, because I’m sure she had more than just 2 songs prepared for the semifinals and finals. This is one of three or four songs she sang multiple times on talk shows and the different versions of Little Big Shots.
It’s remarkable how much she captures Dinah Washington in this performance!

A little reverb, yup, a few things spliced together, yup, singing on the sidewalk during the Christmas rush in Oslo on Instagram, yup. I think we're dealing with someone completely different here, that's hard to put in a box. I just love the way she makes me feel when I listen to her sing, warts and all.

It is notorious for being a form of cheating but I now understand that it can be used in a legit way as one of the many technical tweaks available.
Now many 9yo kids could stand all by themselves out in the middle of such a large audience and deliver this perfect rendition of an old jazz standard. Angelina was borne to do this.

Hi Danny. Thanks for taking the time of explaining "autotune" to us who don't really understand what it's all about.
Angelina has proven she can sing live as well as when she sings in studio which doesn't mean when she is, there are not some "tweaking" done to the track 😉
Anyway, the final product is phenomenal IMO.
This performance in particular is one that I treasure the most. Everything about it was perfect for me. And it's not only about how cute Angelina looked or was but also the courage of standing in the middle of a sea of people and just get on with her singing, which as you said, is a perfect jazz rendition of the song 😊

Thanks for your explanation of auto tune…one of the partners of Stargate, Angelina’s producer, has said that Angelina is one of those artists who can do a song in a single take…but that doesn’t mean she makes no mistakes. I think most of Angelina’s fans like her vocals whether there are small defects or not. It makes her performance more authentic. From the point of view of music production, however, I can understand why small audio defects would be fixed in post. As an amateur photographer, I can tell you that I correct defects in photos in post (afterwards) all the time. Anyway, most of us fans want to think Angelina’s vocals are better raw and uncorrected. But I imagine her record label, Republic records, will use professional standards and methods to ensure Angelina’s music tracks are near perfect when released commercially…thanks for your reactions to Angelina!

“I love her jazzy style.” Amen, brother! It's my hope she turns on the young generation to jazz. Also, you realize that in classic jazz singing they would “sing-around” the correct note before landing it. It is the basis of the style, like with a jazz saxophone. You're right, she sings in the jazz style, but, on the other hand, has never mimicked, or parroted anyone’s rendition. It's all her interpretation, and mostly her arrangements. Compare any of the greats that she covers to the original to understand that she doesn't copy. I don't think you’ve ever said that, but I see it often in comments about her.

What astounds me is the level of work Angelina must have put in to be this good on this performance. Natural talent, a history of listening to the pro's from the jazz era, still there (imho) must be an expert coach advising her on when to use certain techniques, how to improve timing and pronunciation etc. (Hold that vibrato just one beat longer but let it trail off). That she can then implement that advice so accurately on stage at her age just amazes me. She must learn very fast, and integrate a style very quickly. She uses 5 or 6 very distinct jazz styles alone, preteen.

Angelina I have been following for four years since I saw her do that A Capella version of 'I'm A Fool To Want You', I have been pushing people to discover her. I am surprised that these four years later people are still just finding out about her. There is one other young singer who I found first in a three night stretch four + years ago. Her name is Daneliya Tuleshova. Though she is moving in a different musical direction, Pop vs. Jazz and surrounding styles these two are bother perfectionists and want to have it their way and trust their own instincts. One from Norway, the other from Kazakhstan they both have put up well over a hundred covers and also original content. They have sung before many types and sizes of crowds. They are both physically beautiful and very bright. They are both surrounded by strong family support. They both possess voices beyond their years. The biggest difference is their physical stature Angelina has grown to a statuesque 6'1" tall while Daneliya recently hit 5'2" and a little bit. Well I going to stop now. Thanks for your reaction.

Angelina is another one in a million. Her vocal vocabulary, capacity to feel, and instincts for singing a phrase are far beyond her tender years. She hasn't experienced in this life most of what she sings about, yet embellishes her words with evidence of 'been there done that.' Her voice is capable of so many types of singing styles. Oh what a difference an Angelia Jordan makes! And, what will her growing up usher into a vocal treasure trove of already endless possibilities? I would like to see her write something as well one day.

I guess that what it all comes down to is that most people think Auto-Tune (which is a trade marked brand from Antares Audio Technologies) = pitch-correction (generic) for pitchy singers only, and don't know that the Auto-Tune toolbox includes many things, among them pitch control and vocal effects. On Auto-Tune's web page they list 11 different vocal effects, besides pitch control, that they can add. I guess all these vocal effects are the successors to the original analog vocoder, invented in the 1930s.

I just reposted about Angelina and auto tune. I wish for you to understand so let me put it this way. I was there for moral support when Angelina had a discussion about auto tune. Recording engineers and other techs and a few others from Republic were trying to convince her to let them use auto tune to “clean up runs and small mistakes.” She stood up for herself and told them: if she uses auto tune it is NOT her real voice. She told them, people want to hear her voice as it is. If she uses it for recording then she will have to also use it for live performance because people want the live performance to be as good as the recorded music! I heard her and encouraged her to tell them all that if there is a mistake that needs “cleaned up” for pitch run perfection or whatever she will fix it herself with her own voice not that of a computer. She said she was willing to do as many takes as possible to get it right and that she will have it right for live performance. What you may not know is that Angelina has final rights to decide how her music is presented and recorded and final say on the arrangements etc. Final rights! The voice you hear on her CZcams and other social media postings is HER voice. Not an algorithm! She will not have it any other way. She wishes everyone to know the voice she has is the voice they get. Period. You should admit your mistake and realize that the perfection of her pitch and runs is ALL her. Maybe a voice at this level of mastery is too hard for you to understand. Angelina tells me to let you know auto tune may be for some but NOT FOR HER. That’s the way it is. Not your I’ll informed suppositions.

I'm not trying to argue against your words on autotune, but I like to provide some additional background. There were some rumors from earlier productions and recently her current producer reitered she's one of only three singers (including Beyonce) they worked with so far that can perfectly sing a song through in one run. Ivan Mendez, her guitar player in her 12/13 years also said in an interview they usually did only one or two takes for their home videos. I believe they might have applied a little after editing, but tv shows and concerts that really were recorded live clearly show thats mostly superfluous. She clearly used at least some reverb effects in some of her videos. Personally I prefer her recent live performances over the studio recordings which feel somewhat overdone with effect editing to me. I would be curious if the arrangements of those "official studio performances" were still managed by the same guys or if she took over herself.
Angie seems to have a crazy consistence, another reactor noted that if a part appears a second time in the same performance it's almost a perfect replica of the first occurrence.
I can contrast that with behind the scenes info from another singer who said she usually did a dozen takes, choosing the best one.

I am not a sound engineer, so this is not a criticism, but a genuine question. If autotune is supposed to correct errors, but you are nonetheless still able to detect a "robotic" effect that it causes, how does this equate with its stated purpose of making the final product sound better? And wouldn't it tend to eliminate the wide vibrato that some singers might sometimes use? With regard to this performance, what I find particularly impressive are her timing, phrasing and expression, which are stunning and yet seem so completely effortless.

Everything Angelina sings is entirely on purpose. Many of her quirks in phrasing, pronunciation, timing, interpretation, intonation, chest and head voice, vocal fry, etc. we Angels find it all entirely endearing, uniquely Angelina and would not change the tiniest thing. Angelina nor any in her employ nor any official producer or engineer has used auto tune or any effects other than overdubbing and a touch of reverb which mostly occurs on her home studio takes. What fans and other posters do to alter the sound, for whatever reason, do so on their own. I seriously doubt Angelina's contract with Republic Records allows for ANY meddling in her creative process. Republic has not only signed a guaranteed gold mine but one toward whom they feel a genuine responsibility towards; to protect and nurture Angelina's creative genius. I've been following Angelina for four years and have over 7,000 music videos, audio recordings on multiple media, interviews, TV appearances, Angelina's home produced videos in both California and Norway as well as home videos by Sara and Mery, videos of Angelina and her beloved sister Juliette, rehearsal videos.......it goes on and on. I have yet to see any sign of a person in Angelina capable of artifice. She is absolutely genuine and fearless exactly as she appears to be whether on or off stage. Having never met her (I fear I would collapse and die) I can only speculate and firmly believe Angelina's soul is even more beautiful and astounding than her great gift of conveying emotions perfectly in the musical language God has gifted her and therefore all of us.

Danny, what cracks me up is here she is singing to thousands of people at eight years old and for only a second or two do you say to yourself, "What a cute kid!" Right after that you listen to her as an accomplished artist singing a song in a voice that touches your heart. Next comes the inevitable, "That was unbelievable!"
Danny, I'm not singling you out at all, but why all this stuff about "Autotone?" For instance if she pulled away from the mike early on a note they could fix that, right? People are making it sound like the artist is being compromised. Can we suggest the idea that Pavarotti was once "Autotoned?" The only time any critic (or, whoever) should be concerned about putting finishing touches on a musical production is if the artist is way "off key" . Then there is a case of labeling the production something less than genuine. Noise in the background, or a band or orchestra playing too loudly, etc., all seem like justifiable reasons to "make adjustments" and improve the quality of the recording. Yes? Danny, thanks for handling the discussion very wisely. You are a pro and we appreciate your input.

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 Let me jump into this discussion, giving my 5 cents. Also from a singers point of view, co-producing our own music.
I am pretty much sure Angelina is not doing any kind of auto-tune. I am well aware of what that is, both for correcting pitch, and just for effect. The reason I say this, is not that it is wrong to use it, but simply because I have heard every run, and every note Angelina has done in her life. She is fully capable of doing all of them right out of her mouth. And that is what I hear, also with a trained ear.
I also happen to know that autotune has been discussed within Angelinas family, and no, they are not a fan of any of it. They want her sound to be pure Angelina. So I am convinced that she would never accept Stargate, the Norwegian producing duo, to use it on her. She does not need it, and it would be a wrong step for her personally to use.
Reverb and other effects, well those are Stargate very fond of, and something Angelina (and I) supports. That is different.
So no, I strongly believe she is not using it.
There has been only 3 reactors mentioning it, as far as I know (you are the 3rd), of almost a thousand reactions to Angelina during the years. The vocal coach Elizabeth was far from sure, and said it just in her 3rd reaction of Angelina. Not knowing what Angelina fully can do, I can understand the assumption. But knowing what she is capable of, I am pretty sure she would never suggest it.

Perhaps it is difficult to believe but Angelina will do as many takes as need be to get it right. Your “professional hearing” failed you here. Her perfection in runs is astonishing. They must be heard in person without a microphone to fully appreciate her artistry. Misinformation in this case is unfair and damaging.
