Ween's first professionally recorded studio album is an oddball rock classic.

WEEN - CHOCOLATE AND CHEESE / 1994 / ELEKTRA / EXPERIMENTAL ROCK, PSYCHEDELIC POP... that doesn't scratch the surface
classic/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

I love the story behind the recording of this album. When they got signed to Elektra, they were of course given an advance to put out their next album, which was Pure Guava... which they'd already recorded in its entirety on their own 4-track, prior to getting the deal. So they gave Pure Guava to Elektra, and used the money from the advance to get their own professional recording equipment, which was used to make Chocolate and Cheese. They rented space in an office building to use as a studio, rather than paying Elektra for studio time. They just completely side-stepped the usual trap that new artist fall into when they get their first record deal.
Six-Finger Satellite did something similar to sub-pop by making a pandering, "Seattle sound" demo, using their advance to buy recording equipment, then recording the electro-punk noise rock record they intended
Much awesome Ween lore
What’s the usual trap?
@@mitzo4526 label fronts money, then charges for marketing, studio time, myriad of 'hidden' expenses, etc... meaning the only real money a band makes is on tour, so then you gotta ask yourself, if you are just gonna be touring with or withour a label, why bother with the extra jerks hands in your pocket.

Ween is one of the best bands of the past 20 years ... they're incredible in concert, too
You are probably the last person I'd expect to see here lmao
Yes they are. I saw them at the house of blues in Vegas like 20 years ago for the painting the town brown tour and is still my favorite concert of all time. Queens of the stone age opened for them. Or the other way around. I can't remember
@@maximusthemad just saw them in vegas a couple months ago. amazing concert
Oh they’re AMAZING live. Their Halloween shows are unmatched
They are the best band
I'm expecting the high school musical 2 soundtrack tomorrow, your most overlooked classic
Pff the soundtrack in highschool musical 3 is way better Whit more relatable and enjoyable song like "George Bush did 911" and "Anthony saying the N word 20 Time's in a row just because he is black was a lil bit out of place" even the movie is a Master piece, it takes everything we think to know about the characters and Abracadabra now we get real people whit problems dream and ambitions trying to fit in this Grey world
smh my head
>not realizing High School Musical 3 is the least classic of them all
Rucka rucka ali classic

I can't believe you didn't mention 'What Deaner Was Talking About', one of the best songs on the whole album.
This might be my favorite song of the whole record. I do love me some Joppa Road though.

I got into Ween 4 days ago. I was listening to Ocean Man as a joke and decided to listen to the rest to see what that was about. Holy shit, is the Mollusk good. I’m still trying to digest that album and once I do I’ll listen to the others. I respect a lot your opinion, and having you post this video on the same week I got hooked on it really encourages me to search for more.
Gabriel Felix God Satan is awesome, also I suggest to listening to live versions of the songs on guava and the pod, they are so much better live. Ween is one of my all time favorite bands. BIG JILMMM
Austin Nichols thanks fam 🙏🏽
Congrats on your discovery of Ween and I salute your open minded-ness that surely must go along with braving their eclectic style! They’re my all time favorite band and I recommend all their albums.

"it sounds exactly like the dead milkmen making a mr. bungle album" - my favorite description of ween
I love all of these bands, great comparison.
Fun fact: Gene & Dean Ween were big fans of the milkmen in highschool
Absolute masterpiece. The story of how they wrote Mr Would You Please Help My Pony and Spinal Meningitus, gold
Maurizio Mezzatesta how?
Well apparently they were on acid in a hotel writing 'spinal meningitis' when one of them goes downstairs in the early hours of the morning and sees the newspaper headline, "am I gonna die mommy?". He freaked out and went to tell his band mate only to find him sitting in the corner, rocking back and forth repeating to himself, "Mr would you please help my pony?"

Ween is the best litmus test for judging other's taste in music. Even if you don't enjoy them, naysaying Ween shows you don't pay attention.
There is a WEEN song for everyone and theres two kinds of music fan those who never heard WEEN and those who love it

Ween and primus are responsible for me liking actually good music. Especially Ween because of their musical flexibility. Even their first three albums are incredibly creative and hilarious (tho hard to listen to). Definetly the most underrated band of all time.
gws is probably one of their more accessible albums tbh
primus and ween are playing a show together this august! at red rocks!

See I love ween but have never been able to get into primus, can't stand em lol
Brownthony Towntano
The key to understanding Ween is through their live performances. All the songs that seem goofy or random really come alive in a live setting (see: Voodoo Lady). Check out any show from 2005/2007 and you'll see what I mean. Such an immensely talented group of songwriters and musicians and I'm so glad you've included them on this show..

ween is the best band in the world. unquestionably.
I couldn't agree more mang
Very correct
No mention of “A tear for Eddie” ?
One of best guitar solos along with Zappa’s “Watermelon in Easter Hay”
Ween is heavily inspired by Prince and Eddie Hazel. Love Ween, saw them live 4 times and they never disappoint!
I really love this review. I recently listened to the podcast Bandsplain's episode on Ween and I thought they really didn't know what they were talking about. They really portrayed Ween as a parody band, that's more of a musical joke than real music.
Fantano here really hit the mark saying that while its humorous and eclectic, the music is very good, made with care and a lot of talent.

"Cut a slab of melon and pretend that you still love me"
I love this album, and Ween is one of my favorite bands. That combined with the melon man himself just made my day; I don't think I've ever clicked on a video so fast. Didn't mention Baby Bitch though, it's a great song. Not even Birthday Boy, Sarah, or any other "peak-into-greatness" song from their early stuff, or the strong Butthole Surfers influence. But that's really just nitpicking, great vid nonetheless
Jewfro I was thinking the samee but theres so much to talk about in one album lol
Foo Bird true
Yeah, I've always felt that Butthole Surfers' are the real founders of the Brown Sound and Ween latched on and took it further. Butthole Surfers was my favorite band before finding Ween.
MY FAVORITE WEEN ALBUM, thank you melon. I love you so much.

YES FINALLY WEEN :,)
Absolutely brilliant album, I remember being so excited when it was released after Pure Guava - as it marked the start of proper fidelity studio capture of their work. I still thinks it's Ween's best album, it's so eclectic and imaginative as well as musically accomplished. If you don't own it, buy it - it's a very unique musical journey, one like no other...

I wish I could relive the moment I discovered Ween. You are a very lucky person to just be starting your journey. Strap on that there jammy pack and enjoy the ride. Mang.
I have listened to this album so much it's become another member of my family. It takes me back to the days when I was younger stealing CDs from my older sisters cabinet and listening to all the little gems of '90s and early 2000s music that she collected ❤️❤️❤️

Roses are free is probably my favorite Ween track, it sounds like the come-up for a fantastic acid trip.
As a Ween fan I am extremely happy to see you finally touch on them. But why Chocolate and Cheese? I thought I remember you saying Quebec was your favourite?
I love it when an artist is able to keep the fun in their music, not everything has to be taken super seriously. This album is a perfect example of extreme songwriting talent paired with two dudes just having a good time making their music. One of my favorite albums of all time.
This is in my top 5 albums. Definitely my favorite ween album.
Aw man was expecting you to mention what Deaner was talking about. Still great video, love love loooove this album

Thank you so much for making a video about Ween. Love you melon.
this album got me through so much as a superlatively awkard middle school kid in the 90s. i borrowed the album from my mom's 19 year old boyfriend because BOOBS, but i bonded with it immediately and have never returned it.

Ween are so god damn good live. I’ll see them any chance I get! Very talented songwriters, performers. Surprising, trippy, funny. Just great. Chocolate and cheese is the start of great run of albums.
This was such a pleasant surprise! I just recently got into Ween. This is the album I listened to first, and now I am obsessed with the band.
I think ween over our heads with this album, it's simply too good
So cool you reviewed this album, Anthony! One of my favs. Surprised "A Tear for Eddie" didn't get a mention though.
"Chocolate and Cheese", the only two things I kind of miss since going vegan. But I've got this album as a compensation.
What Deaner Was Talking About is literally my favorite Ween song
Surprised that one and A Tear For Eddie didn’t get a mention but solid review👍
He didn’t mention what dreaner was talking about:(
Ween are among my favourite musical artists, and I really love this album, but I also think The Mollusk, surprisingly their first album they made God Ween Satan which they released when they were around 20 years old, and also Quebec, which I know a lot of people don't like as much, which I don't understand, are also classics. Transdermal Celebration, The Argus, I Don't Want It, If You Could Save Yourself, Chocolate Town and It's Gonna be a long night are all songs I really enjoy.
Never heard of this album. Thanks Anthony.

I became a huge ween fan around this time last yaer, was the first show that i traveled for. i always wanted to ask u in a q and a about Ween, I'm pumped for this video.
what melon was talking about
I think you said that you admire their work. I agree.
I think that Ween obviously had the talent to imitate various musical styles, and make social and political comments, and be sarcastic, while remaining soulful and genuine, while delivering insightful and concise lyrics.
That's good.
What matters at the end of the day is: how does the music make you feel.
I can always Vibe with Ween.
