    Solid tips, I especially liked the last one. There's no shame in packing up if you're not enjoying it, after all it's supposed to be fun and relaxing not some kinda miserable wilderness survival test :)

      True but it all depends on the person, some people thrive on facing and beating a challenging situation, that is why they do things like hike trails that are hundreds of miles long or more and mountain biking long and difficult trails. You will not be in pleasant conditions the entire trip, if that was the case it wouldn't be challenging and to some it wouldn't be as rewarding. If you just want a peaceful escape from the 9-5 then yes leave when it loses it's relaxing appeal. You do you, don't worry about what others think!

      It's all about having fun and enjoying yourself. For me, camping is a way to escape from stress and hard times. I don't want to create even more challenging and stressful times in the woods. I would much rather go home, and try again some other day.

      Once you get out there and start enjoying yourself, it will feel just like old times. If it's not fun, leave. Just make sure that you adjust for next time. The most important thing is that you stay excited for the next time.

Clean up is my least favourite but this AMOK hammock (if dry) can be taken down and put away in 15-20 minutes on the kitchen table. Fabulous

      That would be me...I love it but my hubby...not so much. This summer I have upgraded everything. My biggest purchase was the Gazelle T4 pop out tent...wow is that thing amazing. 90 second setup...2 minute take down.
      Next a popup cot with an airbed...I'm 62 so these old bones need comfort. I bought a shower tent to serve as the outhouse so I can be fully-contained at camp during the pandemic.
      Then I've got my girlfriend, Black Betty. She doesn't talk much but when she does, she goes pew pew pew. 😎

    excellent advise for someone who is truly on the edge of soloing. Addressing the keeping a car close and bringing everything you want to bring for comfort and then narrowing that down as you get comfortable over weeks , months, or whatever is really well said. Also - there is no shame in getting yourself set up and then packing up and bailing. its really empowering to know that you can do that as long as you know anyone who matters would view it as a sign of good trail sense or good common sense and nothing else. Being more savvy in solo camping will only help you when you go to camp with others. There will be many moments where you can help others if you have already internalized it yourself. Thanks for making the video!!!

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There is no point in being miserable just to be miserable. Going home, taking notes, and trying again is MUCH better than giving up and never going back. • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  Před 2 lety +1

      Glad it was helpful! We always talk about how "it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it." When you are first getting started who knows what you might need. Plus what I need may be very different than what you need. So bring as much as you can. The more experience you get the more you will leave the stuff you never use at home. If you focus on having fun and enjoying yourself the better you will get at camping alone.

    Step 1: Bring a weapon for protection, a firearm would be my personal pick.
    Step 2: set trip wire on entire perimeter of camp for the night with some kind of alarm system ( I use shotgun primer and a mouse trap) that will wake you up and scare off intruders.
    Step 3: Invest in some kind of night optic whether that be thermal or night vision:
    Step 4: light discipline. Always snuff out your fire at night and never use any light that will draw attention to yourself.
    Step 5: Do not under any circumstances ever camp near any road, pathway, or especially any type of crossroads or trailheads.
    Step 6: while hiking always be aware of your surroundings, mitigate chances of being stalked by taking short rests off the trail. While resting, remain out of sight, look, listen and smell for a potential stalker or pursuer.
    Step 7: when encountering a human threat that is Stalking you, only move during the day time, never at night. Stay low and stay quiet. Remember this, the dark works both ways. Never use a light source unless absolute necessary. Understand this, the moment you use a light source, you have given your location away and must relocate quickly and as quiet as possible or be prepared to defend your current position.

    I camped a lot before I started my family and wanted to start doing it again. I couldn't get any friends to go camping with me last summer so I packed up my gear to solo camp. I knew it was going to be just me so I loaded my little enduro in the truck planing to do some riding before setting up camp. Once I got to the campsite, I realized I had forgot a chair. Strike 1. I off loaded the motorcycle and gathered some wood for a campfire in the evening. Wood was a little scarce around the campsite but not really a problem. I locked up my truck and put on my riding gear. The motorcycle wouldn't start. Well crap. Strike 2. Ok. I got out my camp stove to heat up some lunch. I forgot butter and cooking oil. Strike 3. I hadn't set up camp yet so I loaded the bike, packed the stove away and headed back to the valley. I stopped at a country store where I got a tri-tip sandwich and ate it on my drive home. I didn't get to watch the sunset. I didn't get to see the millions of stars. I went home and figured I would try again in a few weeks. That was in August. It's now February and I'm looking to April or May for it to be warm enough to try again. I hope to find someone to go with me but will go solo with what I learned on my aborted attempt if I have to. Thanks for your insight and thanks for the reminder that you need your gear and to not be ashamed of going home if it isn't working out.

    (Kinda long btw)
    I’m 15 been camping solo for 4 years and for the first 2 years I had no issue camping alone. But 2 years ago I had a run in with a bear while I was in my tent. Bear was outside my tent sniffing the food inside for 3 hours and I was awake for all of it. I had a gun but didn’t want to shoot the bear even though it wouldn’t leave after I had yelled at it. Now I’m terrified of solo camping. Watching these videos really helps motivate me back into it so thank you bro.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  Před 3 lety

      You should look into getting a Ursack ( amzn.to/3ozYPqS ) or just a bear bag that you hang (I don't know of a good one to link to.) That way the bear can sniff around somewhere else for hours and you won't have to deal with it. I have encountered 2 bears in my life, the first one saw me and ran away without me having to do anything, the second one I could hear grunting and making noise but I couldn't see it. I was able to get into my vehicle and make a bunch of noise with the horn and scare it off but both were scary. Now I always keep my car keys in reach. I have scared off many animals (I think mostly deer) in the middle of the night just by pushing the lock button on my key fob. It makes one loud beep indicating the vehicle is already locked and the animals take off running. Once you start driving maybe you can get back out there and try again. If you thought the video was long I wonder what you think of this reply.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  Před 3 lety

      Yep, the best advice I have is to always make sure to check things out. You WILL hear things and see things out of the corner of your eye but if you shine the light on them and see that it's only a squirrel or tree branches rubbing together it won't be scary anymore. It makes getting familiar with those noises a lot easier and speeds up the "getting comfortable at camp" part.

    I set up camp in the woods yesterday. Only things bugging me were the ants coming in through the roof so I taped it up, but it was just a sweaty sauna in there even at night. I could not get to sleep well. Wish I just had some tent cooling. Over here in northern AL. It's been 90° day and night. 1st time camping alone at 26.

    • @newageselfreliance
      @newageselfreliance  Před rokem +1

      You have to open a window. I know when I first started camping alone I would close up my tent so no one could see me. I like my privacy. However, the less the inside of the tent can breathe the more condensation you will have on the inside. opening a window, that has a mesh to keep the bugs out. really helps cool things down and keep things dry. I know it feels weird being "exposed" but just make a note of where the windows are on your tent and always set it up in a way where the window is facing the woods or away from where people can see you. Once you get comfortable you can start facing the window in line with a breeze and that will really help you stay cooler when sleeping.

      Spraying the zipper of your door and the windows with Permethrin would help as well. Here is an affiliate link if you want to look into it. amzn.to/47havpr This stuff does not go on your skin it's not like a normal bug spray. I treat my clothes and my tent with it and it helps keep the bugs out of my tent and it kills ticks on contact. So I always make sure to at least treat my socks and pants.

      I always sleep with my keys in the tent with me. So if I hear something outside the tent I can press the lock button on my keyfob and my vehicle makes a chirping sound reminding me it's already locked. That chirp sound will scare away any animal in the area. You can also use your car alarm if you really want to scare off everything in the area. Just keep in mind if you are at a campsite with other people the chirp most people can sleep through and won't think anything about it but the alarm could make some people crabby.
