I recently came across a browser extension for Google Chrome claiming to be FaceTime. It's obviously not real, as FaceTime is only available on Apple devices through a dedicated app. As it turns out, this extension is a scam, and today we're gonna uncover its real purpose.

Oddly enough, the pages are no more. All I really get now is an "Error 404" message.
The "Facetime for PC" extension, as well as others like them still exist tho.

I remember Steve Jobs promised to open FaceTime protocol and make it an open standard. That didn’t happen.

He said much the same about OSX as well. Technically you can run open source versions of Darwin, but you need the BSD or GNU utilities just like with Linux, and there’s very little support for it so you have no reason to. But he kept calling OSX “very Linux-like” in his initial presentation.

I downloaded the extension and put a fake email address and password and it let me in, so that proves it is a scam. When I logged in it took me to human verification. That was one of those scams that tells you to complete an offer.

Actually if I remember correctly Steve Jobs said FaceTime would eventually be cross platform when they announced it. He’s been dead for 9 years now
The first FaceTime version was based on peer-to-peer and ready to be deployed on other platforms. Apple was sued for patent infringement regarding this protocol and now FaceTime calls must go trough Apple servers. Hence it won't be cross platform any day soon.

6:02 I believe the scammers can use that first page to steal Apple ID credentials and possibly trigger Activation Lock on all Apple devices connected to that account, and hijack other accounts using the same credentials too. Also, in the background, the real app would show what the camera sees, and that whole UI doesn't look like an Apple UI on second glance.

The most I might expect to see is someone reverse-engineering the protocol and putting a project on github/gitlab/subversion.
But trust me, last year I researched FaceTime-compatible applications for MSWin/Linux/Android so my daughter could meet with her tutors. I probably saw this one and would have thought "um... no, not even touching that one". Ended up having her use my old 2010 MacBook Pro until I got hold of an old iPad2.
If it weren't that she specifically needed Facetime, I wouldn't ever bother with such a closed, proprietary protocol.

Since you published this, all the various versions of this extension are now a 404 (I found 3, all of them released this year).
There is still an external "chromebook" version of this that basically goes directly to that web app/site, though - Google can't yank that, the best they can do is somehow block it in chromeOS.
Seeing that their "register" accepts empty input, these guys can be easily taken down with a DoS, though...
Also, if you did install macOS in VMWare, I’m pretty sure even if you sign in with your Apple ID, FaceTime and iMessage are notorious for not working in a VM without some know-how

Yeah, so many red flags here just from the Chrome Webstore page. Sadly, there are SO MANY extensions like this. So, so many. It's ridiculous. You could make a series of literally hundreds of episodes analyzing all of them. Plz don't, tho; they're all the same, more or less. You can file reports on them, but there's nothing stopping them from making more and reuploading the same extensions. It's the same as email scammers. You can report them, but email addresses are free, so they can infinitely make more. I wish Google would limit how Chrome extensions are submitted.

I’ve downloaded chrome extensions that were later removed and then gave me a warning saying that extension was compromised and could have stolen data, the fact Google even let them on the chrome web store in the first place is awful
I have OSX running on a modified version of VMware ESXi. I then use Apple Remote Desktop from my PC to remote into OSX. This is the ONLY way I've found to get iMessage on the PC..nevermind trying to get video/voice working. I was thinking of some USB over ethernet solutions...but that's big $$.
i thought chrome did have a review system because it always takes weeks to release an update to an extension until it goes live

Yeah, I urge everyone to stay away from ANYTHING with a requirement to "complete an offer." I've noticed this scam everywhere, on games downloaded from shady sites, on fake game mods, and more. Even if you complete the offers and don't put in the information, the app or extension you downloaded doesn't even have the supposed content, like in this video
