Wir lagen vor Madagaskar
Und hatten die Pest an Bord
In den Kesseln, da faulte das Wasser
Und täglich ging einer über Bord
Ahoi, Kameraden, ahoi, ahoi!
Leb wohl, kleines Mädel, leb wohl, leb wohl!
Ja, wenn das Schifferklavier an Bord ertönt
Dann sind die Matrosen so still, ja so still
Ahoi, Kameraden, ahoi, ahoi!…
Der lange Hein war der erste
Er soff von dem faulen Naß
Die Pest gab ihm das Letzte
Und wir ihm ein Seemannsgrab
Ahoi, Kameraden, ahoi, ahoi!…

Song: Sounds happy.
Actual meaning: *LIFE IS PAIN!!!*
Behold,
The description of me!
the song in a nutshell: *FML*
It became heaven when they occupied norway and france
@@lefrenchaudir188 no, Tirpitz was stuck in Norway in the cold for years
that seems to be the German experience from the last 150 years, unfortunately.
As an American sailor who drank with German sailors, THIS is the ultimate sea shanty: missing home and the girl, and death at sea; with a catchy tune. Sehr gut.
Thank You Sir!

they had a cross to bear, as do we, but they knew that not only did they have to bear it but they knew that actively going about it would relieve them of their potential pain and lead them to a better place, literally or metaphorically.
"Captain, a German cruiser has been spotted. Should we fire?"
"Just wait, I want to let them finish their song first"
*No no, let them finish their song*
"And on that day, the former enemy fleets started singing together, no battle was fought. At the end of the day, the war was over, and the two enemy countries became the best allies, working together, for a peaceful world..."
Until the captaib relizes that the germans keep on singing, even during an attack!
The allies feared us, like we sing these cheerful songs, while our comrades drop down left and right, and the still keep on singing.
Just imagine, it is intimidating
@@vincentabraham5345 I doubt anyone would be able to hear their singing in the midst of a chaotic battle.
@@SoshoKozadokaGojiraChargedUp No no, he has a point.
I am a non-German, I was singing the song happily until I saw the English lyrics and thought,
Wow, that's a cheerful song for a song that tells a story about a plague and dead people.
We call that Galgenhumor.
@@Emigdiosback yes
German humour is no laughing matter.
Gallows humour.
It cheers me up in the darkest of times.
Which, come to think of it, is when I need the cheering up the most.

Allied navy songs: Kill the enemy!
German navy songs: Ahoy, Comrade Ahoy ahoy
The inspiration of this song was a Russian ship who exercised the besunged tragedy - the story made it around the wold. The song is to keep the mood up amog the German merchant sailors - despite the bad news. Early propaganda....
The German phrase for this i this song is "Galgenhumor".

when u r happy u enjoy the song, when ur sad u understand the lyrics. such a fitting quote
Yes, too true.
Fun fact: in german icehockey stadiums the refrain will be sung by fans when some players are fighting each other. With a slightly different lyric. Instead of "Ahoi Kameraden" they are singing " haut drauf kameraden" ( beat him/them comrades)
I'm not certain whether to be laughing amused or to feel something lol
As German I can confirm that’s what we do whenever we go on a boat
Jolly German sailor's song: "We were becalmed for two weeks , and we lost a man a day to the plague..."
Jolly Irish sailor's song: ""...then we all got the measles, a fog blew in and the dog drowned..."
Jolly English sailor's song "...and then we all ate each other!"
Wieder ein tolles Video!

translate to English: We lay before Madagascar
And had the plague on board
In the boilers, the water was rotting
went overboard
Ahoy comrades, ahoy, ahoy
goodbye little girl, goodbye, goodbye
Yes, when the skipper's piano sounds on board
Yes, then the sailors are so quiet
Because everyone longs for their homeland that they
would like to see again
We had been lying there for 14 days.
No wind whistling the sails.
The thirst was the greatest plague.
Then we all ran onto a reef
Ahoy comrades, ahoy, ahoy
goodbye little girl, goodbye, goodbye
Yes, when the skipper's piano sounds on board
Yes, then the sailors are so quiet
Because everyone longs for their homeland that they
would like to see again
We lay before Madagascar
And had the plague on board
In the boilers, the water was rotting
went overboard
Ahoy comrades, ahoy, ahoy

Because everyone longs for their homeland that they
would like to see again

This just goes to show you German morale. They’re plenty away from Germany, close to Madagascar, there’s a plague killing them, and some are falling overboard along with each having a missing home and the girl, yet they still make a cheery-tuned song of it

Never heard this version, but bloody wonderful it is!
As far as military songs go, Germany has everyone else beat.
1000% bro
Because of the Bubonic plague
I was thinking about singing this in english as no one would notice it was a translation and then they brought up accordians. Also what beast of a ship is that.
It's either a Bismarck class or H-class , basically the H-class were bigger versions of the Bismarck class but never left drawing board, but the Bismarck class consisted of two ships: KMS/DKM Bismarck (duh) and KMS/DKM Tirpitz, but after a happy event that left Bismarck with a new home at the bottom of the Atlantic Tirpitz was modified to make it more "unsinkable" ( knowing the fate of RMS Titanic and Britannic, RMS Lusitania, IJN Yamato and Musashi, HMS Invincible, We all know things gonna go to hell so ya)
@@Emigdiosback yes they use metal salvaged from Tirpitz, i also heard you can buy a knife made from the steel of Tirpitz but im not sure

So beautiful song! I am happy to listen it many times
I didn't know happy songs with sad lyrics existed before the 2000's
I remenber my Family singing this song. Good old times.
At that time a Russian merchant sailor ship got the pest on board and made it´s way through the worldwide media - this songs pics the story up. There was never the pest on German ships, but some have been eaten by canibals in the South Sea, wich later became Bismarck Archipel (South/East of Australia). There is also a song about it but i don´t rember it yet.
Bismarck have survived! :-) Salute to an Great Ship and all Sailors!

To think about it, during voyages til the late 19th century, a sailor dying was an expected sight.
Why does every German song sounds so good and then you learn what they're singing about it's always sad
Only this time not always XD

What a bittersweet tune of work! There is a jolly melody to keep up the morale of mates gone to a watery grave, not to mention those so homesick and missing their gal that all they can do is sing it out to cope with a fire situation for all concerned!🎭🎼🌹❤️🖤💛💞👍🙄😏🥺

Most of my records orchestra dad used to play them alot when we were little
So schöne lied.
This is the song that plays in my mind when my fleet dies of attrition
I play this song very often , great singers ,
que hermosa melodia
While it's a morbid message to even think about much less experience. I think the the sway of the beat and harmonies of the sing along shows a memorial of these fallen celebrated in the music to help the grieving left behind cope somewhat better with their loss!🤔🎼🎵🌹🇩🇪🌹👍❗
Its just the best "shantie" ever
Allthough its always a bit chlling when you consider the very probable Background of the Russian Baltic Fleets voyage during the Russo-Japanese War
