    I was using 1200 baud packet via an Icom IC-02AT and Kantronics KPC3 TNC to access BBS's in the mid 1990's when I first got licensed. No internet in my house until several years later. First internet was dial-up with a 28.8 Kbps modem. Sometimes I miss those days!

      I miss those days, too. I am moving back to them. It's amazing how well connected or little group is now over radio in the Southwest. We're using JS8 on 40m, APRS (MAIL), regional repeater systems, and now Winlink daily.

    You'll need the internet for the VARA purchase but only once. After you have the key, you can install on any computer easily afterwards. Also, you will love the PowerGate. Great piece of kit!

      Thanks, Jason. I'll install VARA on a VM on another machine to grab the license. The next jump will be VARA with wine... which I know you've covered. I'll be adding PGP support natively into a customized version of Pat when I get there.

    Good luck with your Windows 10. Never let it touch the Internet again.
    One of my buddies that certifies software for NASA's SLS rocket hates MS updates. He has his MS in Computer Science and BS in nuclear physics, so he is no slacker.
    He failed a couple times turning off the automatic updates on his HP computer with Windows 10. Then one night he got out a bottle of Gray Goose and went to work looking for evil kernels, virtual links, etc. About 3hrs later he decided he had achieved victory.
    Everything went well until about 3mo later when HP called him out of the blue and asked, "Mr. Luchuk, are you using your computer?" Steve told him them what he had done as it was his computer. They said that he couldn't do that. They agreed to disagree and ended the conversation.
    About two weeks later when he was online he started getting updates again.
    He has decided that it is a losing battle for a Windows computer that goes online.

      This story sounds about right. With Windows 11, you don't own your computer anymore, Microsoft does. I'll stick with my air gapped approach to running Windows 10 for radio work. 73

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  Před 23 dny +1

      I've dabbled with a VARA on and off and have always liked the power of that mode. I'm not a Windows fan, so I always put it on the back burner. With a few tweaks to Windows, I think I managed to get Windows working nicely for this application. Also, it was my recent work setting up a Winlink RMS Gateway for packet that lead to the small jump to VARA. Good luck back into it. The goal is to layer PGP encryption and use P2P with the business frequencies.

    • @vironpayne3405
      @vironpayne3405 Před 23 dny

      PGP used to be the rage 20yrs ago. Didn't it eventually fall out of favor because computing horsepower made it a moot exercise to encrypt using PGP against govt agencies, and govt agencies demand a backdoor.
      I don't believe the govt got their backdoor, but the developer decided not to continue further development.
      So, I guess PGP encryption is still pretty good, if you are not worried about government spying.
      Or, if you are small enough potatoes below the govt radar you can expect hours to days of encrypted impunity, which is great for time sensitive messaging.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  Před 22 dny +2

      PGP has a rich tradition of being secure, trust-no-one option. I was using it in the mid 90's and early 2000's, but It is still relevant today. The implementations that I use are all open-source and have been audited by independent security researches, so I do not believe that there is a backdoor. For the average person and organization, it is more than sufficient. I think it less popular as security is always a trade-off when it comes to easy of use. More secure systems are more difficult to use in practice. However, I am working on a solution and some recommendations to get people going with PGP again. Stay tuned.

    Watching for a second time. If you do progress the notes to a book on this information I definitely want one. I already use the older Toughbook and Toughpads [FZ-G1 and FZ-M1]...likely for the same reasons. Being able to load/reload all of this software seems critically important. Also being able to do so without ever connecting those devices to the net [keeping them clean] seems likewise important. I will be soliciting assistance from an old friend [much more knowledgeable than I on this] to go there. Including setting up similar mem sticks for all of the Mesh and ATAK software + plugins to load onto the little Android FZ-X1's...to supplement present android units. .

    I would love to see a video of you going over how to download and setup the Raven software from FOSA Tech (formerly terminal armament) using an SDR and the FZ-M1 in layman's terms. When I say layman's terms I mean assume I don't know how to run a windows update, like LAYMAN'S terms. RTO tech from Insta made a "beginner" guide and I was lost before I even got to the end of step one. That software is really solid for doing wide band scans over long periods of time with an SDR which would be a major plus when trying to do frequency planning or scanning around to see what kind of traffic is in your general area. I don't need to know how to set up olympus or whatever his subscription based software thing was, just how to get Raven up and running on windows. Vlad from FOSA said he was going to make a simple windows installer for it but that was just one of his many many broken promises by the look of things unfortunately. Thanks so much for the great content!

      At the moment, Windows is a temporary necessary evil until I get everything to work with wine under Linux. It's another tool. Either way, this system is setup for dual booting between Windows and Ubuntu.

    I would like to learn more about iOS based digirig lite and off grid use

      That might take awhile as I'm not an iOS user. The trick may be finding the "right" USB-C to lightning adapter that passes audio. Normally, that's the research I would do and share. I'm sure one of the other CZcamsrs will tackle it.

    The raw video is plenty good. I could do without the windows stuff though ;)

      There will be just one or two more video on Windows, then it's back to Linux. I am setting up Windows for dual boot, so I figured I would capture the journey.
