    Kanan was the living epitome of a perfect Jedi. Protected the weak and innocent, adhered to the Jedi Code, trained a Padawan in the ways of the force, combatted the Sith and fought injustice wherever he saw it. He even realized something the Jedi Order never could. That compassion and love were a Jedi's greatest strength. His love for Hera only fueled his connection to the Force. The complete opposite of what love did to Anakin. Caleb Dume truly was a Jedi Master.

    The amount of power that Kanan displays here, holding back a massive detonation, healing his blindness, pushing his team clear of the blast, not many Jedi become one with the force before their death. Kanan's sheer will to save the ones he loved allowed him to in his final moments I think.

    • @icedreamer9629
      @icedreamer9629 Před 8 měsíci +17

      The greatest strength of darkness is hatred. Yoda's folley was giving into his fear that, by encouraging love, jedi would fall through it to the dark. And he was right, he prevented many dark side falls for hundreds of years.
      But he also cut off the Jedi from their greatest source of strength, that the light side is fuelled most by a selfless love for others. There is no greater selfless love than to sacrifice oneself for the innocent.
      That is why Kanan was able to hold back this blast, why Luke was able to defeat Vader, why Obi-Wan was able to escape those crushing rocks. They were fighting to save an innocent.
      In that moment, the force will show to a jedi new ways to focus their powers that will make them... Invincible.

    • @josephmother2659
      @josephmother2659 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@icedreamer9629the ones they protect do not need to be innocent, because no one truly is. I would say they exist even more to protect the defenseless and powerless against any and all tyranny and prejudice. It goes without saying that this is a lofty goal and there aren’t enough Jedi to ensure the well-being of every being in the galaxy, but it is what they strive towards.

      There’s a theory I quite like. That Kanan was granted far greater power in the force in order to hold back the explosion as long as he did. This is kinda an example of the Force itself granting kanan not only the power to save those who he loved but to see Hera one last time.❤😭

Throughout Rebels they’d have a character get captured and then rescued and it’d all be light hearted fun. So I went into this with that subconscious expectation, it’d was even proven right when Ezra and Sabine got to Hera and Kanan, and then the order was given, and it just hit me right in my heart, especially after this when the credits rolled and the music kept playing while ashes fell in the background. This is one of, if not the most heartbreaking deaths in all of Star Wars

      You know I never thought about it that way but you’re so right. Yeah the Jedi lost horribly. But it took tens of thousands of years for the Sith to beat the Jedi. And the Jedi managed to topple the sith within like 20 years. Speaks to the power of the light.

      What Pryce did is worse than you realize.
      A single TIE Defender has been shown to be a serious threat to an entire Rebel squadron. Dedicating enough resources into their production and development would strengthen the entire Imperial Navy and make them vastly superior to the Rebels and their X-Wings. But thanks to Pryce's overzealous attempts to kill the Rebels she has inadvertently sabotaged the entire program just as the Emperor is in the process of deciding whether to keep putting resources into it or put everything into the Death Star project that Galen Erso is currently sabotaging. The Empire is subsequently going to go back to its strategy of quantity over quality, which will ultimately make them weak enough for the Rebels and their often old but superior quality equipment to defeat.
      So basically Pryce in her selfishness might be directly responsible for DOOMING the Empire in this single moment!

    Rewatching this scene and the scene where he gets “knighted” by the high inquisitor made me think about what it means to be a Jedi. In the republic days, Padawans had to pass the trials and it was a very structured process with rules. Luke becomes a Jedi through his perseverance and staying true to the light side in the face of darkness. I like the idea that Kanan becomes a Jedi master through his deeds and his heart rather than passing a test. He was a true Jedi.

    Kanan’s death remains one of the most impactful in Star Wars and fiction in general, to me, for a few reasons.
    The first, was the sense of invincibility that Rebels gave the Ghost Crew. Up until this point: the crew had survived so much. They came out with scars, physical or mental, but they always survived. So, surely Kanan would survive, right?
    This episode shattered that illusion. It showed now that every main character had a chance of dying in the final episodes.
    The second, was the impact. Kanan’s sacrifice had both an impact on his friends and family, and the Empire. To the surviving Ghost Crew: we watch them grieve in their own ways. Kanan’s death impacts Hera’s decision making and makes her hesitate sending Ezra and Sabine into the Imperial camp. As for the Empire: We watch Governor Pryce throw a celebration for the death of Jedi…only to cover up her failure in destroying the fuel pods meant for the Tie-Defender project, Thrawn’s project. Hell, even The Emperor felt some form of change in the force when Kanan died.
    And lastly: Kanan’s death mattered. In many forms of fiction, we see character deaths written as some form of cheap suspense with no real impact other than to keep the viewers on their toes. That was not the case for Kanan. His death pushed Rebels into the climax, it gave the Ghost crew the victory they needed over Thrawn, and his sacrifice had a lasting impact on the survivors and the audience.
