I agree that context is key in history and people shouldn't necessarily be labeled as "evil" because somethings they did is offensive to modern sensibilities. But it should apply to all peoples and civilizations. Aztec, European, African, Asian and everyone else alike. Which means we have to look at the Spanish, Portuguese, and British Empires in the same way as the Aztec.

The Aztec Empire fell because everyone around them hated their guts for their oppression, brutality, and frequent tithes of human sacrifices. Less than a thousand Europeans did *not* conquer 6 million Aztecs, smallpox and a quarter million recruits from the surrounding tribes did, the Spaniards just said 'hey, we _won't_ cut out and eat the hearts of your children' and the other tribes said 'sign me up!'

No, if the black plague or any number of other large out breaks of plagues hadn't of broken out in Europe perhaps the Roman's would still rule this world. If the Europeans hadn't of introduced horses back into North America. Maybe the Aztecs would have slowly conquered all of North America sacrificing thousands of people on a daily basis. Perhaps not, perhaps people would have been better off with famines, human sacrificing, raids by other tribes. Or maybe people enjoy air conditioning, phones, stores that you can just go and by food.

I’ve been interested in aztec civilization for a while now, and I’ve learned a lot. Yes the Aztecs did some terrible, unforgivable things, but when truly looking into *why* they did it, I came to understand why human sacrifice was such an important part of Aztec culture. The Aztec people were conditioned into believing that the gods required blood, mainly the sun god: Tonatiuh. Tonatiuh was both the sun god and the sun itself, and had to be nourished with human blood in order to move across the sky. The Aztecs truly believed, without a doubt, that without sacrifice the sun would not rise. Their culture revolves around the sun, as it grants life to everything. Without the sun the world would become dark and cold, crops couldn’t grow, and the earth would be destroyed by monsters. They didn’t practice human sacrifice out of malice or hatred, they literally thought that without it the world would end. While I definitely do not condone human sacrifice, I understand why they did it. How they even came up with these beliefs I don’t know, but If I was an Aztec person living in Tenochtitlan, raised to believe such things, I too would believe that human sacrifice was necessary for the world’s survival.
We may not agree with what they did, but the Aztecs were not evil. Their society was conditioned to believe that blood sacrifice was the only way to prevent the destruction of the world. They otherwise were incredibly advanced, being experts on mathematics and astronomy, believed in universal education for everyone, no matter what gender or class. At the time Tenochtitlan was built upon a lake, it was larger than Rome or any European city at the time and described by Spanish explorers as even more beautiful. Every night parties and reunions were held for citizens to relax and socialize. They kept incredibly clean, bathing twice a day and keeping their city as spotless as possible. They made giant structures like templo mayor, even without beasts of burden to haul materials. These are just a few of their accomplishments. It’s important to acknowledge the bad, but we shouldn’t forget the good parts of their civilization either.

I just keep finding it hilarious that people always forgot to mention that it's virtually impossible for a single expedition of 900 men to wipe an entire empire of millions out. The truth is that, they freaking didn't. Literally everyone hated the Aztecs because of the military oppression, brutal taxes, and sacrifices. The Spaniards were the spark they all needed to come together and take the fight to the Aztecs. Some accounts tell us that there were over 200.000 allied warriors.
Did the Spaniards genocided the Aztecs, then? No, FFS. Everyone who supported the Spaniards got a slice of the cake. That's the reason why Latin America looks nothing like British America. That's why Caucasians and people of European descent are the vast minority in South America. Unlike the British, the Spaniards didn't wipe out the natives, they offered them positions of power.
You can check that the early governors of Mexico all had Aztec names. The Spanish empire operated like the roman empire, by assimilating people.

When studying an distant and mostly unknown culture, it’s wrong to demonize or glorify their practices. What a group of people does at a particular time of history has a lot to do with their level of ignorance. Modern globalization of knowledge and culture allows us to better understand our state of being and take us closer to objective truths. This allows us to abandon practices caused by ignorance and avoid acting on speculations.

Advanced civilization? They were literally using Paleolithic technology millennia after everyone else moved on from it. They didn’t even have the wheel ffs. Peaceful harmonious people? They literally raided their own villages to find people to sacrifice to the Gods. They weren’t all eager volunteers who saw it is an honor like you tried to claim lol. They were so cruel to the surrounding tribes they conquered and subjugated that when the supposedly cruel Europeans came, those tribes joined forces with them against the Aztecs immediately. “Several modern historians believe otherwise”? Lol my God. That’s just a euphemism for “Serval people alive today seek to rewrite history in the pursuit of their utopian vision”. This video is utterly ridiculous. While an interesting perspective, the video tends to almost kneejerk towards the 'devil's advocate' argument at the expense of known factors of why they fell in the first place and having other civilizations, including the conquered tribes or rival nations disagreeing with the Aztec way and the Spanish in perspective for what they did and why.
With regards to the OP though, technology advances by need and innovation, and if such doesn't exist to spur wheels when they were innovating in a number of other areas (including public sanitation and as above, taxation), they should not be faulted for not being symmetrical to a completely different society.

@@marley5116 You guys have been drilled too long with the political correctness that we all hear constantly. And it’s making you both try to make the same flawed point. No one expects “isolated” civilizations to be totally on par with the rest of the world in every area of technology. But we aren’t talking about new cutting edge concepts here. Basic, obvious innovations such as metallurgy and the wheel are pretty reasonable expectations for all large civilizations to have figured out in multiple millennia. Necessary for their existence? No, obviously not. But would they have massively improved their quality of life in a litany of ways had they had them? Obviously, yes.
And I say “isolated” because they really weren’t. They were only isolated from Asia, Europe, and Africa. But they had access to and contact with a ton of different cultures on two major continents that should have been driving each other’s technological advancements all the same and they weren’t. That is only one of the many reasons that some cultures are, contrary to popular belief, superior to others, not just different. True of races? No, of course not. Of cultures? Absolutely.
