EP-165 | Exposing Global Media's 'Bias' on Modi & India with Shashi Shekhar

  • Shashi Sekhar is the former CEO of Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcaster. He assumed office in 2017 and served a five-year term till 2022. An alumnus of IIT-Bombay, he was the youngest and first non-bureaucrat to hold the public office since its creation in 1997.
In the latest episode of the ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash, former CEO of Prasar Bharati opens up about the Western media's 'obsession' with Prime Minister Modi, often calling him an 'authoritarian leader' - a direct attack on India's democratic setup.
He also explains why Global media is ‘biased’ against PM Modi and continues to defame India’s democracy.
Shashi Shekhar speaks up about how these foreign media outlets have repeatedly attacked India's majority population, the Hindus, and their sentiments around the newly inaugurated Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
He also advises foreign journalists not to cross a line and hype up India's internal issues, which in turn may create a security situation in the country.

I am Nepali Hindu living in USA for last 34 years. My few cents on this topics are as below
    1. West never put any weight on India until China rose and geopolitical situation changed
    2. The west does not accept any non Abrahamic religions and so the bias persist..this is not only to Indians in India but to all non Abrahamic religions followers living in west.
    3. The west uses the expats write against their country to give more credibility to their view.. these people are mostly either bribed or brainwashed to other religions
    4. In terms of Modi, there is no positive info that gets published. There is no coverage on how India has pulled over 400 millions people out of extreme poverty in last decade or so
    5. India does need to promote positive propaganda like China has done for so many years.

I live in London since the last 50 years -Indian by birth but a British Citizen. I much appreciate all Smita's brilliant pod casts. This one in particular was a superb example of exposing the West's media bias against a rising India. However good the BBC and the Guardian have been in the past, to me they have displayed an inexplicable bias with respect to the rise of Modi, India and Hinduism. Its clear they have very poor understanding of the complexities of India and the great civilisation it represents. Thank goodness Modi, Jaishanker and balanced Journalists like Smita can rise above this chatter and let results and actions prove them utterly wrong. "Eggs on their face" is the best answer to all of them!

That is fed to upcoming formative generations of scholars everywhere, so in the final analysis, the harm is done. Irrevocable, irreversible harm. Actually fear of India rising some day.. Indians may have forgotten our history but the west strategists know about that. They know the potential of our nation. They know that one Shivaji who merely lived for 40 years, could put an end to the slavery of 300 years.
Hence since 1947, they have put in strategically planned efforts to suppress the nation with the help of our politicians. They also know that the spiritual strength of Hinduism/Buddhism/Jainism is not with them. Hindus and India will rise as Hinduism gets stronger. Hence purposefully our nation was declared as secular, strong Hindu leaders like Sawarkar and Hindu institutions like RSS were suppressed and banned.

I'm glad an Indian media outlet like yourself is finally speaking up on this issue because the amount of times I've read headlines with "Hindu nationalism" "authoritarian" etc. to malign India's democratic credentials in the past week alone has been disgusting. These outlets fail to understand the diversity of Indian electorate & treat Hindus like a monolith. Most of these biased headlines come from Al Jazeera (downright communal, the worst kind, viewing everything only from nitpicked religious angles) & Western outlets like BBC, Washington Post and New York Times (still carrying the white man's burden & moral lecturing Indians over 'freedom' & 'secularism', the irony). There's no point in playing defensive because this arrogant liberal bias has seeped in deep for decades already. India should strongly build its own global media brand, putting forth India's story in India's words, and not through the words that US, UK, China, Qatar or Pakistan want to use for India. I say better late than never, Indian viewers are in millions, a huge chunk, which should be capitalized positively.

As a hindustani i wish for india to prosper, not only the rich and middle class. but also the poor classes. i hope they will not be left out, that there are no street children in big cities anymor who grow up without families. i hope that EVERYBODY (regardless of religion, caste) will have enough to eat, a house to sleep in and a safe environment. only then in my opinion india is succesful.

In case of Mass media and communication , we need to carry out deep research on Indian narrative and how the west interacts with it and displays it. Instead of a adhoc research, it is critical to institute serious continuous research on western media strategy and approach in reporting India . These will provide insights on how to counter the reporting of western media and possibly give them a chase for their money. We need India external media creating a narrative of other countries. Long way to go but the battle must be invested and we need to take it to the doors of western media houses.

    Smita ma’am,
Your podcast is super awesome and there’s so much to learn especially interpret current affairs with facts.
Thank you for this podcast in particular because even I wasn’t aware what PM Modi ji was trying to convey with his “Mangalsutra” remarks.
I was like, what’s wrong with the PM???
And none of the newspapers or channels gave any kind of clarity on this statement, they were just vilifying him.
And in our city (Bengaluru) we don’t get newspapers that are centrist in nature. There only & mostly far left leaning newspapers in circulation.
I’ve loved all the podcasts that I’ve watched up until now, be it political ones, journalists and non political ones. I hope you are able to do a podcast with business tycoons as well including from eve financial sectors.
Jaya Bharata jananiya Thanujaate, Jai he Karnataka maate!
    Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! 🇮🇳

A question/suggestion to Smitaji.. why can't ANI set-up new product/service for foreign media houses, especially state media? You can have subscriptions to give them curated content/primer for the specific region of India they wish to have reportage about and buddy programs for their reporters providing local support of ANI reporters, adding additional shared income sources for ANI and local reporters.

The Election Commission of India is conducting the general election democratically by creating atmosphere of free and fair polling is the head ache of indian pollstars and western medias need not worry about.Indians are well matured enough to elect the government they like without any external pressure.the example is 1977,1991,1998,2004 and on.

  • @ived7138
    @ived7138 Před 19 dny +3

This is an echo chamber discussion since the people that watch and can understand the duplicity of the Western media and liberal democracies already are well aware of everything that’s discussed. We need to build a narrative among the Bharatiya masses that’s an alternative to the myopic and superficial model of society promoted by liberal western democracies. This is what Modi ji is doing but the common people must become aware of the nefarious intentions of the U.S., Europe and China. This will also reduce religious conversions and the degradation of our rich heritage.

And still need to look deeper into how moder global media operates, generates revenue, patrons, biggest funders and their backgrounds, govt backing, their media aims and objectives, etc. But ANI might not want to look into it because they are also a media house.
I would request Smita ji to still go for it and do it.
