Indanthrone! Positively gorgeous. Especially in mixes when trying to achieve realistic greens. You will find it pairs we'll with almost all reds, yellows and greens. It is a beautiful, clean rich blue. Indispensable and lovely beyond words. A beautiful, moody dark with some transparent oranges too.

Your son sounds adorable! Thank you so much for showing the process of deciding what colors to include in your palette - it was very helpful and interesting!

Very fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. I only just saw this for the 1st time. Mijello's Veridian is a phthalo green pigment. (PG7) is on the tube. It's not a true Viridian pigment. I have no clue why they would name a phthalo green pigment "PG7" Veridian. Holbein does the same thing except they say Viridian Hue, which is more correct. PG7 is very comparable in hue among all brands. But when they name it veridian, its usually because they use more binder and less pigment to make it less saturated that matches the softer hue of veridian. Real Veridian is very granulating with very low saturation. You have some great mixing choices! I hope they are working out for you.

Tfs your process, it was very interesting. I often think how hard it is to pick just 12 colours, and I love how you came to your conclusions. I want to swatch loads of my colours now! When I got the qor green gold last year I was astonished how versatile it is and so pleased to find it. I adore that qor high chroma palette all round but I found nearly all the colours were very staining, which means I'm always going to need an alternative if I need to lift out which with both Billy Showell and Anna Mason is a standard in their botanical work. I first realised one palette can't do it all (if it's portable) when I bought a Daler Rowney botanical set many years back. It included everything you needed to get started with botanical painting in a nice zip carry case, even a little water pot. It was a standard set of 12 in their portable pocket set but the artist included her studio set of 24 which was also quite different from a standard choice of colours. You might be interested to know that in the 12 she favoured indigo ( very much like the W&N indigo) which when watered down gave great shadow effects for flowers and stems. You've inspired me to dig this set out and use it. When I do I can include a list of the paints in the 12 set if you might be interested to see how close you came to it. ( The artist is Siriol Sherlock).

The best alternative colour to Ultramarine Blue that doesn't granulate and gives clear more transparent mixes is Phthalo Blue Red Shade the PB15:1.
Cobalt is different than Ultramarine even if (depending the manufacturing process) looks like it has a similar hue. Cobalt is more opaque and it doesn't granulate.

My daughter did the same thing with my make up tote. I took a photo of her smiling up at me and I love it.

Thank you Karla! Great to read a comment from you again :) There are couple of adjustment I am doing to the Portable Painter in terms of colours. The QOR Quin. Red Light has been delivered yesterday and after swatching it I realised it looks nothing like the 'swatches' they provide online and also the colour printed on the tube label is the same... So anyway the Red is still to be picked :)

I love your videos. They are dangerous for my wallet! I have accumulated a collection of cobalt teals and turquoises, mostly because of your videos :-) If you are undecided between Prussian and Indanthrone, maybe lightfastness can be the deciding factor? I would choose PB60 over PB27, since PB60 is more lightfast

Oh dear, I am just now realizing this is one of your older videos. Sorry - I have been watching a lot of them in mixed sequence. Please disregard earlier comment as I am sure by now, since 2 years have passed, you have most definitely made that decision.

Interesting and very useful video! As I am only beginner, your videos help a lot to understand color mixing, all tests about different brands and so on. Very-very thankful to you for these lessons, learn a lot from all of it!
I made Schminke Akademie Aquarell 12 color swatces and blendings big chart (12*12 colors), but not very happy with results. As the colors in pans are quite bright and beautiful , the mixes turned aut dull. Most of mixes seemed to me muddy grays or neutrals... so sad. Only some greens and some browns are nice, not get nice purple or violet, some kind gray violet only. Maybe it is just me ( begginer) or is it really not very good paints for mixing. Maybe you have experienced something like this and have any good ideas about it ? I know what you love Schminke paints, but don´t find video about Akademie - series paints mixing and testing, maybe just have missed it .
Thank you again for your big work and best wishes to you from Estonia ! :)

Hi Maarika, before I bought the Schmincke Horadam watercolour set, by a mistake I ordered the Akademie palette. Akademie is the student grade watercolour range and Horadam is the artist grade. After not realising that it was student grade I painted for about a week with them and started wondering why that paint is so dull and on an opaque side and also doesn't flow or mix very nicely.
Basically the answer is because it is student grade. Schmincke Akademie is not that great as a student grade watercolour I find but it is still expensive. As I later learned if you want to start with a student grade watercolour you should look into Cotman which is by Winsor and Newton. I see a lot of artist still use some of their Cotman watercolours because they are good enough for certain colours.
However if you can, I would take out those pans of Akademie and buy singular pans of Horadam. The experience will be very different. I always say that the worst thing to do for a beginner is to start with student grade watercolours as they can actually put you off watercolours altogether :) So make sure you start learning with good watercolours if you want good results. Also make sure you pick mostly Transparent colours, that will help you with beautiful mixes. Hope this helps :) Greetings to Estonia!

Thank you so much for taking time and answering! Now is clear for me, that I need to by real artist grade paints instead of these. Maybe start with only few colours and get joy from them and then slowly grow paints collection ( because of high price). But very nice to have your suggestion and so I will do! Thanks again and have a lovely colorful weekend! :)

Try the primary colours first, pick a nice red, blue and yellow, and see how many beautiful colours you can mix. And then once you are comfortable you can add secondary colours. :)

Thanks! Yes, must look for them maybe in Amazon uk , because in Estonia they are not available at all. Akademie colours I bought in Latvia, they had only these, I think price is problem, maybe so little customers or some else reason, why Horadam is not available in my region. But will look in e-shops for primary colours. :)
