Texhnolyze - The Shapes, Pt. 1 : Hungry Ghosts

- Texhnolyze goes to great and sometimes uncharacteristically direct lengths to articulate a vision of a future hellscape. As such we can identify many elements that overlap with popular depictions and traditions of Hell.
In this episode, I examine the relationship between The Shapes and the Preta or Hungry Ghosts. Their unique design, behavior and the character motivations within draw an interesting, and in my view, intentional parallel.
The Shapes will comprise a multi-part episode since there's a lot to discuss. For the first two episodes, I'll be examining their literary/mythological inspirations to continue laying the groundwork for how I drew my own understanding of the series.
This episode uses the English dub track. I foolishly pulled the wrong audio track from my DVD, but I'm actually curious if the English dub is better for this sort of thing, in case viewers prefer to listen in the background. Feel free to let me know in the comments!
(Apologies about mispronunciation of Sanskrit words. You'd be surprised how little agreement there is in some of these pronunciation guides)

Thank you for taking so much time to dedicate to Texhnolyze.
Though I've been a fan of Serial Experiments Lain for over 20 years, it was only recently that I watched Texhnolyze. My initial delay in watching was a seemingly slow pace. To me it was as daunting as a large novel may seem when its first few chapters didn't feel engaging, only to later read in full and be blown away as the series slowly ensnares one and seeps onward and inward toward their minds... Thankfully I decided to push through, suddenly finding myself so engulfed and entranced and entrenched in its story, its concepts, that I cannot get enough. Much like Serial Experiments Lain, this series holds so much within it. I've since watched it at least 4 times over within the past 2 months. Every facet mesmerizes me. Including where I imagine we are going next on this adventure: Dante's Inferno.
Texhnolyze, my favorite anime of all time, and possibly even my favorite piece of fiction so far. Your videos are always a blast to watch. Its crazy how Tex covers layers upon layers of themes, from biology to mythology.
I can't even begin to imagine an analysis video on Yoshii and Ran. Their motivations always felt so ambiguous to me. All I know is Yoshii was tired of waiting to die. At first I thought he was trying to prevent mass texhnolyzation of people to the shapes, but then, I dont know, He was probably unaware of that technology, and simply wanted the Class to fight with whatever means they had.
And Ran, I dont even know. Whatever she wanted, she seemed to regret it at the end.
Ichise, I get though....wait, nevermind. I dont. His relationship with his father is very obscure as well. So much I dont understand, but thats what makes this anime so incredible to me. Its cryptic, but not nonsensical.
Maybe Yoshii's true motivations were left in interpretation. At first I thought him to be a bored sociopath (and a fascinating one, much more intruiging villain than Kano) but after watching the last four episodes I felt this parallel between him and Ichise; like both of them had to face the same consequence.
We'll never know if Yoshii truly wanted to screw up the Hill so that Lux could unify itself but if he would've succeeded I'd bet Kano and the Shapes would've had a hard time conquer Lux. Just like in this video some of the factions' members wanted more from their life so they turned to Shapes.
Maybe Yoshii wanted people to have a purpose rather than turn into soulless machines. At least in that situation Yoshii gave them a decision to become what they want, Kano on the other hand just wanted things for himself and nothing else.

There is an episode in Ergo Proxy about creatures that look very much like Preta. And that is just one of many similarities i see between EP and Texhnolyze.
I actually forgot about that episode.
Where humans are surviving the barrenness of a post apocalyptic world, but they've de-evolved into a rather pathetic species. They barely react and just meander around doing nothing.
But they are surviving, and it's hinted that they may evolve back into ascendancy.
What a brilliant correlation between preta and the shapes. Great video dude!

but what i would like to see sooner or later is a summarizing video where you say how all the partial analysis you made sums up in a few basic points that the anime is trying to convey.
Haha, I wish I had more subscribers as well. Unfortunately, this anime is a tad obscure, and I'm probably not promoting enough.
And I will definitely be covering Ran in a future video. There's a lot going on with some of the characters so their individual examinations are taking longer than some of these other types of videos.
