- Chartres is a city in France, on the river Eure, prefecture (administrative center) of the Eure et Loire department. Located 96 km from Paris on the Beauce plain.
During the Gallic period, Chartres was the capital of the Carnutes tribe, and the city is named after them.
Chartres was destroyed almost to the ground during the raids of the Norman tribes and became the capital of the county from the tenth century.
Now it is the administrative center of the district of Beauce, known throughout the world for its magnificent Cathedral, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is considered to be the finest and best preserved Gothic cathedral in France and Europe, with the greatest architectural purity. Since 876, the Holy Shroud of the Virgin Mary has been kept in Chartres.

Dziękuję za tak miły komentarz. Witamy we Francji. Kiedyś na pewno nakręcimy film z Illiers-Combray. Znamy Polaków jako zapalonych turystów i miłośników różnych katolickich imprez. To jest niesamowite! Swoją drogą, byliście kiedyś w polskim kościele w samym centrum Paryża? Uwieczniliśmy to na jednym z filmów. @@LBFWalkingTours byliśmy, Paryż też jest w naszych sercach, w Illiers mieliśmy rodzinę Valerie et Marcel Huart (tante et oncles), są pochowani na cmentarzu (inhumé au cimetière) w Illiers, nikt tam już nie został, inni mieszkają na południu Francji, do Illiers jeździliśmy do Valierie et Marcel na wakacje od 1989 r. jako studenci i później z rodziną na urlop, jak Marcel Proust do swojej tante, to nasza mała ojczyzna z wyboru, zawsze msza w kościele L'église Saint-Jacques
w Chartes po zakupach zawsze chodziliśmy na makaroniki na placu i pizze ziemniaczaną
Bardzo się cieszymy, że podobał się Państwu nasz spacer po Chartres i że pogrążyliście się we wspomnieniach.

Niestety w Chartres ogrody katedralne są teraz zamknięte i nie można ich było zarejestrować, a podobnie jak w całej Francji jest teraz wiele napraw. Pewnie przygotowania do igrzysk.
