    And it's Lady Frieda Harris for the WIN!!! Her deck is SO MUCH more intriguing and lively than the others, which come off as extremely static and b-o-r-ing. Also I agree that Lon Milo Duquette is a much more personable, funny, and approachable guide to all things Golden Dawn, with or without Crowley's innovations. Thanx for the side by side comparison!

    Definitely not a Thoth/GD fan here, though I really like Freida Harris' paintings. This system has always seemed to me to have too many layers to it - like a sentence with too many adjectives. You've actually made me more pleasantly disposed towards it.
    And snarky? - No. Where I come from, it's just called getting your retaliation in first!

    There is a book of letters between Crowley and Frieda. Do you know that one?
    My Dear Aleister', Creating the Crowley Harris Tarot. It's printable through one of those self print sites... hmmmm??? Lulu? I can't remember.

    What is the name of the book you suggested for the Thoth deck?

  • @genopsych
    @genopsych Před 2 lety

    The DuQuette book includes the GD card descriptions and discusses Harris’ departures. Waite-Harris should have been included to show the breadth of interpretations GD members had of the cards. E.g. Waite-Smith reflects their Christian focus, whereas Crowley is derived from their Thelemic practices. Wang and others have their own flavor. We need some good scholarship covering the 19th and 20th century GD tarot lineages for use as better reference.

    The swastikas in the Thoth Tarot could be there to enhance the negative associations and that deck is good about being appropriately dark and brings in mythology beyond the Golden Dawn scope, but seldom seems to skip any of the meaning when adding to it.
    I am not a fan of anyone and wouldn't excuse the bad beliefs and actions of people.
    The Rider-Waite-Smith deck was not the first to make the pips and court cards more lively.
    I definitely see why some avoid the cards with full labels and attributes.

    I appreciate seeing the comparison between these decks as I’m ready to explore the esoteric symbols of the Golden Dawn, so am looking for the most attractive deck. I do have the Crowley deck.

      @@thefoolsjournal It was all about the Thoth Dec and how to read them w his book, Understanding Aliester Crowley's Thoth Deck, he was in Newport Beach, CA. Very nice, cool, intelligent, and "laid back SPOOKY," sometimes. Great guitar player he is, too! 🇨🇮👊🔮

    I'm certainly in the minority here because I really like Robert Wang's version. His approach is more simple but it says a lot. There's a certain nostalgia that resonates with me. Crowley's version is great and there's a lot to look at but it's just not for me.
    Appreciate the comparison video.

  • @whalesong813
    @whalesong813 Před 5 lety

    Thank you for the side by side comparison of GD/Thoth. I agree with you I would like to know more about Lady Frieda Harris. I did not know you could get such vibrant, rich, saturated colors with water colors, love Lady Frieda's art. I actually like key words, even when I disagree with the key words, they always give information even if I feel it is "hell no". If they are really bugging me, I trim them off lol. Oops by the way, you might not want to look at the Navigators of the Mystic Sea there is key words - my bad. Keep up the snark, makes me laugh.

    Please Please Please tell us more about Benebell’s Astrology Course. I’ve watched her video and I’m so tempted but I just can’t pull the trigger would love to hear thoughts from someone who took it!
    I think its so eye opening for readers to look at the different systems, even if it is only to see where they diverged from other systems. Seeing different concepts of what is usually the same idea always broadens the mind.

    • @thefoolsjournal
      @thefoolsjournal  Před 5 lety +1

    I love my "Initiatory Tarot of the Golden Dawn Deck" (Lo Scarabeo), which is by the same artist who did the Ludy Lescot Tarot. It is not a pip deck and reads very intuitively. It has the same back as the one on the left (in your video), just grey instead of green and black, but the same symbols. My newest addition to my collection has been the Röhrig Tarot which is also based on the Thoth, with a bit of RWS and Haindl. I don't really know how I feel about Crowley but I am thankful for his deck as a source of inspiration for many other great decks. Thank you for sharing these. :-)
