  • In this video we tackle filling holes in our van and adding some Dodo sound deadening with Dodo Dead Mat Hex. This will hopefully reduce noise and vibrations on the road and prevent any rust forming in the future. We want our van conversion to last!
    We have a large number of screw holes (at least 50!) left from the old plywood floor we removed, that go straight through to the outside. We wanted to fill these in so we could paint over them, and after some searching we found Steelstik for this. It worked really nice, and allowed us to sand it down to a super smooth finish (enough to slide across, good fun!). Took a bit of doing but we think it will be worth it in the long run.
    Holes filled, we painted them over with some red oxide primer and then a couple of layers of hammerite. The van went from resembling a spotty Dalmatian to a crime scene to a super clean finish in the space of a couple of days. All ready so we could then take it for a weigh in and see how much we have to play with to finish our conversion. Weight is at a premium!
    Working through rain, hail, and finally snow we got to work putting in our sound deadening. It's given the van a bit of character and made it look a bit like a spaceship on the inside :)

    Hi guys. Thanks for the vid! We just got our Transit which looks identical to yours so this was hugely useful. Just sealing up the holes from the ply and was gonna use pop rivets and sealant. I think your approach is much better though with the steelstik. We'll be doing the same as you tomorrow!

    so glad you are keepinig it real, down to earth and accessible for most of us who are not loaded with money to have uber expensive DeWalt tools or have access to a fancy barn/hangar. the chickens are a hoot. haven't had a chance to check your descriptions but hope you have listed the products you used like steel stick. I work full time so I am giving myself two years to do the build. electric and wiring is going to cost me £850 for someone to do. Will have watch your video as well as do alot of researching and may look into buying a kits so I have all the parts sans getting 2 AGM batteries. I hooked up my solar on my previous van. Where in England are you based? were you working full timee whilst doing the builld? any particular vloggers you used? I use Greg Virgoe and Mel's small world van build. Thanks again.

      Thanks for the comment, yeah we try to list all the products we've used in the description but if we've missed anything just drop a comment. We're in Devon and have been doing the build outside so taking whatever the weather can throw at us! We've watched quite a few channels, both of those you mention. Some other good ones are Combe Valley Campers and Mispronounced Adventures. Good luck with your build 🙂

    Love your project!! Really looking forward to the next video. We bought the exact same van last November and are converting it as well. Although we decided to go for a slightly different lay-out, we seem to be solving the same problems :-) Last week’s challenge: finding the parking aid module which we covered up behind a wall... Tip: don’t.

      @@SelfBuiltStories It’s a long van so that is a good idea :-) We installed a camera as well. This week we expect to finish the walls and windows. And we started building the kitchen. In Januari and Februari (cold! :-) we did all the sound deadening, Armaflex isolation and installation of the watertank and the battery.

    Looks good. Wanted to see what techniques others are using to fill hole.
    I like some of your idea, I think I will go with the weld stick.
    However, Something I would like to recommend which I plan to do on mine is to paint the underside of the holes with some sort of stone chip underseal, to stop that rust coming back from underneath, these salts roads are terrible for rusting steel so I think this is more important than painting the inside. Hope this might help...

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you, and yeah good idea. We think we'll add something on the underside when it comes to doing a bit of work under the van putting in the tanks and things. Might as well hit two birds with one stone! It will be good to get a better view of how everything is holding up too, although we did take it for a service recently and they commented on how clean it is underneath which was nice news! Good luck with your build 🙂

    Hello! I have watched countless youtube van vlogs, and yours are my go-to; consistent in your content and delivery, super helpful and also seem like lovely people; thanks so much. I have a question; do you recall was there rust in any of the holes in the floor? If so, did you treat or file it before filling with the epoxy? Thanks! My van is holier than the pope atm..

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 10 měsíci

      Hey! No problem and thanks 😀 We didn't really have any rust in the floor holes fortunately, the only place we really had it was a couple of holes in the walls. For those we used some wire brushes to remove all the loose rust first, sanded it back a bit and painted it with hammerite. Good luck! 👍

    Sikaflex 511 would have sealed the holes up quicker and cleaner and it remains flexible so won’t crack or rattle free with the movement of the van.

      Oh quicker for sure, we spent quite a while doing it! Not sure about cleaner though, we were really happy with the result at the end, felt like a new van 😀 We used a fair amount of sika on other parts of the van but for the floor the steelstik worked great 👍

    With the larger holes did you need to put anything on the underside or was it just a case of molding the putty before application? As I have a number of holes where I think the racking must have been fitted or a second row of seats.

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 4 měsíci

      Hiya, nope we didn't have to go under the van to do any of them. Ours were all fairly small holes from screws though so it might work out a bit different with some larger ones. The steelstik just pokes through a little bit on the underside, like lots of tiny little grey icicles 😛

    Does the 3500 kg max weight include driver and passengers, full fuel and water tanks, as well as food, bedding, clothes, any camping gear, etc?

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 měsíci

      Hiya, yep exactly that, it's the van itself plus everything that's inside including passengers, belongings, pets if you have them, any groceries you've bought... etc! One way of looking at it is if you were ever pulled over and onto a weighbridge then exactly as you are at that point in time should be no higher than the limit. When we've weighed the van we make sure to completely fill up all the tanks, so diesel, water and gas, and have our possessions and ourselves inside while they take the reading too. In practice most of the time we're not going to have full everything as diesel is used up, food it eaten etc, but starting by weighing the absolute max should mean that in any normal day-to-day use you'll be within the limit.
      It adds up pretty quickly too as just putting in some groceries every tin is another 400g, 1kg for a litre of milk, then you've got all the clothes and bedding and stuff! We actually decided to up-rate our van to 4T in the end to have some more capacity to play with, as being the jumbo transit to begin with and with both of us, it didn't leave much for everything else and we wanted a bit more flexibility to play with. HTH 👍

    Hi guys, just wondering if your van had any vent type things on the bottom of the floor in the wall cavity, and if you did what did you do with them? My ford transit has these and I havent seen anyone talk about them so not sure what they are for or if they need bording up..?

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem +1

      @@SelfBuiltStories thank you. It's so weird, i cant find anyone else with the same things on youtube but seen a couple of discussion threads saying they are there to prevent issues when the sliding door closes due to the air pressure. I think i'll end up closing them to prevent dust coming in and the air fan will deal with air pressure. Cant wait to see more of your build! I've learnt so much from you guys 🙂

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem

      @@abit2556 Ah we do have some vents to relieve air pressure for the doors and things, but have only really noticed them on the side of the van (not on the floor in the cavities as you mentioned). That's not to say they're not there, but it's not something we noticed at the time. We didn't change any of the factory vents, aside from sealing all the panel clips on the side to prevent water ingress

    How you treat the floor on each hole before you put the steel stick on? I’m about to do mine I I’m a little unsure what to do. Am I to prime the metal first? 🤷🏼‍♂️. Thanks. And great effort by the way

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 lety

      Thanks 😊 What we did was use a wire brush attachment on a drill and remove any surface rust that was on some of the holes (though most didn't need it, they were pretty clean) then we added the SteelStik after just giving each hole a wipe with a cloth and a bit of IPA/panel wipe. Once set we sanded that back so it was flush (this part took a while and you could get away with just leaving it a bit lumpy, but in our case we wanted the foam boards on top to sit nice and flat with no ridges, so we thought the effort to sand it all back was worth it). Then we went over the steelstik with red oxide primer, and when that was dry again with white hammerite. That's how it is for now, at some point when we're under the van we might also spray some rust preventer on the underside of the holes too.

      No problem! Just remembered some of the holes were quite burred and sharp from where the screws had penetrated, so we also used a larger drill bit and manually turned it around the holes a couple of times, and a light file in places to get them smooth before we put the steelstik on. Good luck with your build!

    Does the 4T upgrade means a different licence?

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah, a standard UK B car licence allows you to drive a vehicle only up to 3.5T. You need the C1 additional endorsement which then allows you to drive heavier vehicles up to 7.5T. If you passed your driving test before 1997 then you have it automatically, but for everyone else you have to take an additional driving test to get it. That's what we did which was a bit of a faff and took some time, but happy now that we've got it!
