We've Wired in a Dashcam! - Autovox V5 Pro | Transit Van Conversion E05

  • *We wanted to install a reversing camera into our Transit van conversion as it's quite long, around 7 metres! In the end we decided to go for a front and back dashcam, and install the Autovox V5 Pro, that has those features and more. Glad we did.
    We went through a few different options before eventually settling on the Autovox V5 Pro as we wanted something where the LCD screen is built into an OEM style rear view mirror (as our van didn't have a mirror already).
    In this video we install the Autovox V5 Pro into our van conversion and hard wire it into our fuse box, before drilling our first hole into the bodywork (yikes!) to custom mount the rear camera under the third brake light.
    The setup is working really well (once we could get the screen to stay stuck without falling off!) and makes driving much better, as the mirror now works just like a normal rear view mirror... great!
    Thanks for watching! Leave us a comment if you have any ideas, we'd love to hear them!

    Sooooo, I’ve discovered your channel in prep for a van conversion and all I can say is WOW!!! The detail you go into is insane and sooooo helpful! Honestly, best series I’ve found!!
    When utilizing CZcams for help it’s so important to hear the lessons learned and best practices and your channel is full of this! So excited to work my through the series!
    Here is a great example of what sets your channel apart…. I watch this video….. yes I need this component!! I go on to Amazon and start working through the reviews….. and there you are (I recognized the camera and wire placement on the photo you uploaded) with the most detailed Amazon review I have ever seen 🤣🤣 Not only helping the community in CZcams but sharing the love with Amazon as well ☺️☺️
    Only 3 years late to this series but Keep doing what you’re doing!!!

      Thank you very much, and glad you've discovered our channel! We like to get in as much detail as possible and try to find the right balance to be helpful but still keep it flowing. It's tricky sometimes as there's so much research that goes into each project!
      And yeah haha well spotted, we felt like leaving a good review as we had great customer service from them and we like the camera. Still going strong today! We actually use it predominantly as a rear view mirror, and are so used to having it now that I'm not sure what we'd do without it! 😃
      Good luck with your conversion 🙂👍

    I've just got one of these having had the strap on variety in my last car. From experience I would advise that the GPS is best left under the pillar trim cover as they tend to cook and malfunction when exposed to direct sunlight on hot days. Mine worked just as well under the trim.

    Hi guys. I'm loving your videos - I'm doing a van build in the exact same van as you.
    Can you tell me which number fuses you used for the constant and switched live for the add-a-fuses please.
    I put mine in what I thought were OK and I've been having so many issues with the central locking since. The van seems to lock and unlock itself at random now !!
    I pulled out the fues taps and its all OK now so I need to know which fuses are best to use.

    Question: how and wot app do I need to set this up

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks, hope it was useful 🙂 There's no app for it actually, all the setup is done on the unit itself (it has a touch screen and a settings menu). Not much in the way of setup needed either, we just set some basic things like the length of recording, whether we wanted audio or just video, metric/imperial units, that kind of thing. And you can view any videos/photos taken by the camera on the screen itself, but to get anything off it you need to take the SD card out and put it into a computer.

      Hi Patrick, no problem, we have these: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08DL5NN58/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. There's two in a pack. They work well with the apps Sensor Blue and ThermoPlus and have pretty good bluetooth range. Our one criticism of them is that the battery life is a little on the short side, I'd say it lasts 6-8 weeks. Works well though, you just need to sync the data and export from the app periodically as when you change the battery, once the app resyncs it loses all the previous history. Glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂

    Hey Tim!
    I wired one of those into my Toyota Yaris last year and listening to the "power-on-chime" as well as looking at the display, my BOSCAM unit is just a relabeled Autovox unit. Pressing the buttons on mine after it powers up switches to GPS speed indicator on the left side, pressing once more turns it off. Does yours react the same way?
    Beware that wiring the unit into the permanent 12V source on the fuse panel will draw current in standby mode as well (not just while recording after the car was "bumped"). I did install a 128GB card and also removed it to check the actual recordings - pretty usable material actually, and it records from both front and rear camera! Perfect for cutting trip-videos on YT!
    It's a pity, that Ford does not use standard "DIN" style radio cutouts in the dash - the Chinese twin DIN size radio units offered on eBay are Android OS based and actually offer camera inputs and standard radio, DAB, USB, video, navigation, bluetooth, etc. all in one unit. I just ordered one for our new Crafter to replace the factory unit.
    Nice install and video - very exciting watching your progress!!
    Best regards from Germany,
    Volker

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 3 lety

      Hey Volker! Glad you enjoyed the video :) Yes I think they're the same company or at least connected, as I needed to email them and they have BOSCAM in their reply signature also. Ours doesn't have any physical buttons but you can turn on 'driving mode' which has the direction compass and speed visible, and tap to turn it off. We've wired it in permanently but if you can believe the specs it has built in low power protection, so should automatically stop drawing power once the battery voltage falls below 11.6V. We haven't had it long enough to vouch for whether that works correctly or not yet, though!
      Yeah we're pretty happy with the quality of the recordings, looking forward to be able to take the van somewhere with some nice scenery to make the most of it! Lots to do before then... :)

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey, thanks! We haven't noticed any problems with it at night on the road, we basically use the camera as a rear-view mirror. In fact that's what its main use is now, and you'd have to remind us it's actually a camera sometimes. It's so useful having it there and it just blends in like it was the original mirror. The quality is really good, it's obviously a bit more grainy at night but when lights are shining around it does a pretty good job in our opinion 👍

      Glad you enjoyed it! Every vehicle will have a slightly different fuse box, you just need to find either a spare unused slot or something that you can piggy back off that is non-critical, and then use the a fuse tap. In the manual or on a sticker near the fuse box it should tell you what all the different fuses are so you can find a suitable place to tap in.

    Great video thanks. Can you tell me if the mirror is easily disconnected from the cable/window bracket as I am getting a van that will have the Remis blinds that pull upwards from bottom to top of window and I would need to take it off at night? Is that possible do you think. Cheers

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před rokem +1

      Cheers! Hmm interesting, well the cable would disconnect fairly easily, there's a connector a little bit along the wire from the mirror, which we have tucked under the headliner. So you would need to pull a bit of the cable down to access it, or just have a bit more slack when it's installed so that the connector is still accessible without having to pull it down from the headliner. And for the mirror itself, it slides on pretty easily onto the bracket on the window. But there is a tiny screw on it that you tighten up to pull it more into the bracket. You could probably get away with not doing that each time, as we didn't actually realise it was there at first and didn't tighten it down. The problem we had was the bracket kept falling off the widow because of the weight of the mirror (our van didn't have a mirror bracket installed from the factory annoyingly). But after 4 attempts and trying several different glues, it's stayed up for a long time now! 😀

    • @SelfBuiltStories
      @SelfBuiltStories  Před 2 lety

      If you mean the actual blade fuse itself, it doesn't matter as they're not directional. But if you mean in relation to a fuse tap/add-a-fuse piggyback adapter then you want to put that in so that each of the two circuits is individually and separately fused. Which way that is depends on which side is the hot/+12v feed in your vehicle fuse box, which you can check with a multimeter. HTH 🙂

      The main wire that runs from the mirror unit to the camera at the back of the van was long enough, but yeah the small red reverse light trigger wire came up a little short to get from the top of the van down to the light cluster. It's in the video but we just crimped on a small extension to it.
