    I would agree with you on the simulators but would like to add some more information to help viewers decide. The simulator you mentioned called FPV EVENT has changed its name and is now ROTOR RUSH and just added a new city scape freestyle map that is sick. This simulator will run on most PC's and MAC with no special hardware required. The DRL simulator gave me some trouble at first with latency on the controls and jerky graphics updates, I had to upgrade my video card and power supply in my pc to handle the graphics demand to make it run smooth but I agree that these maps are awesome. There is another new one on the market for around 20 bucks called velocidrone which also has awesome maps through industrial parks, cliff diving, gokart track etc. and it also teaches you how to tune PIDs and Rates using Betaflight built into the simulator.

      @JohnEFly  Před 7 lety +4

      Thanks for adding this information. It's helpful as more information becomes available. Rotor Rush definitely frustrated me in that my software key no longer worked with it. It seems ridiculous to me to charge $50 for FPV Event which is out of line with the competition and then ask for another $50 once you say "yes upgrade" when it tells you there is a new release. For that reason I have yet to try the upgraded Rotor Rush.

    I can't express enough how much Liftoff has helped me (it's the only sim I tried so far)
    I learned more in the first 5 hours in Liftoff than I learned after several months of flying and crashing the real things.

  • @Oderwat
    @Oderwat Před 4 lety +1

    I agree with the "realistic feeling" of Freerider. It is strangely "feeling real" and it actually reflects my real struggles and crashed much better than Velocidrone / Liftoff or DRL. I recommend flying the real drone for some packs. Then build or find a similar environment and tune the settings while there is still that feeling from the real thing. Also the editor is a lot of fun. I started to rebuild some of my real-life locations there and it actually is quite possible to do even if you are no 3d wizard.

      Thanks man! For what it's worth, I had the exact same experience with FPV Event. Yet, I went back and tried it again a month later, and it actually worked again for me. That being said, I prefer Velocidrone to FPV Event these days, so I find myself using Velocidrone more than anything else. DRL is also a great free option though. Everyone should at least try that one!

    A little trick of the trade when using your dialog in a review video's try and repeat what product you are presenting or playing etc, instead of like when you say for instance (this one) just say DRL because it's just good professional edicate and so the audience can know plus when you go back and view your own in post you will say ah that sounds great.
    Cheers and yes the DRL has the most accurate physics. I also noticed that DRL is just like rate or acro mode on beta flight or GCS. CHEERS

    DRL is fantastic. Totally free, good graphics, and with some tweaking on the settings, you can get the virtual quad flying very realistically. You can adjust gravity (definitely turn it up so it's not so floaty), quadcopter weight, motor power, and even rates and expo. It accepts input from most controllers, ranging from a Taranis to a simple Xbox controller. The only downside is that crashes are extremely forgiving, like mentioned in the video. But as far as the actual flying experience goes, DRL is awesome

    Nice review! I do believe Liftoff can be a decent sim. ( only when hardware allows it and all the game/FC settings are right )
    I have liftoff recordings on my channel go and see, with recording software games can be somewhat laggy and floaty i agree.
    However this was the first sim for me that made my flying possible. There are some maiden Martian 250mm 4s video`s on my channel as well, these flights were a direct result after practicing the Liftoff simulator ;) I will also have a look and feel the other sims shortly!

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks for the comments. It may be that my FC settings are not ideal, but I wasn't able to get it to fly as realistically as the other simulators I tried. That being said, I did try Liftoff first and it did help me improve with flying a real quad. the mechanics of the sticks are still the same as a real quad. The other sims just feel like a better simulation to me. Definitely try the others out and let me know if you see it the same way I do. If Liftoff was my only sim, I would still use it and I do think it would still be helpful. I'll check out your recordings in the meantime, thanks!

    Hey, I did try the DRL sim last week, and i would get back on that =)
    I must say that DRL is most definitely not closer to in real life flying, taken into comparison with the Liftoff feeling.
    Liftoff can have the best feel, only if u know what the right numbers and gear are to keep the one timers out of this sport ;)
    DRL has some new maps and descent graphics to fly, but they encourage people to actually dive buildings (Is this good!?)
    After DRL gets you somewhat in the air pretty quickly on stock given settings, you think you can do it all but there`s no wind, air drag, momentum or what so ever they did not even bother giving proper I and D terms to feel correct. Its not there yet!
    Liftoff does focus on the low riding and close proximity flying and the real feeling of that before they focus on graphics!
    Go chek my channel again! Don`t just wastebasket Liftoff if it actually should be DRL. Seeing is believing!
    I do not get sponsored or what so ever to say this stuff, i just did some decent testing on both sims!
    Here are some Liftoff recordings, my most favorite sim:

      Glad you gave it a shot. I don't think that DRL is the most realistic either, I placed it at #3 in my opinion. I just thought it was the most fun because I really enjoy the race designs they have in the game. They are unlike any other courses for me, and I find them extremely entertaining. Perhaps Liftoff has improved since I last tried, and perhaps my issues could all be solved with settings. I will be sure to give it another real shot.
      I did check out your videos. They are awesome. Really loved your racing style with lots of flair through the Liftoff course. Really entertaining stuff! Keep up the good work!

    Hi! I would like to ask your opinion about the updated leftoff with the betaflight setup!? Im a noob, and never flight with a real quad so I decided to learn the basic movements in a simulator. Right now which one would you recommend for me? the new liftoff or the freerider? thank the answer in advance

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  Před 7 lety +1

      I really need to make an updated video. I would definitely choose the updated Liftoff at this point. If you plan on running a Betaflight quad, having the same rate config in Liftoff is a huge deal. The timing is exactly the same now for my quad and Liftoff. I also find the new physics engine much more realistic. For the past few months, I was flying Liftoff almost exclusively when I went for a sim. That has changed very recently, where I fly Velocidrone the most, but both Velocidrone and Liftoff support Betaflight rates. I would choose either Liftoff or Velocidrone for someone starting out.

      Dude, I completely agree. It's amazing to me that at the time I made this video, Liftoff was the sim I wanted to use the least. However, now I find myself reaching for Liftoff any time I want to practice with a Sim. It's a completely different experience after their latest update.

    Freerider vs DRL vs Event vs Liftoff currently for realism, and then a separate order for fun??

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  Před 7 lety

      So honestly things have changed a bit since I made this video, and probably deserves an update. Liftoff became significantly better with a major patch after this video. Of the group I feel like it became the most realistic to fly. As an added bonus it offered betaflight configuration settings making the rates feel very similar to my real quads. I will also say though that Velocidrone is my new favorite simulator. I find that even better than Liftoff. So right now I turn to either Velocidrone or Liftoff for a realistic sim. For pure fun tracks, I break out DRL.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster Před 7 lety

      Hmmmmm, okay. Well, then I'll move to my next inquiry. I have this problem with the DRL sim where after about 25 minutes max my PC will blackscreen and begin audio looping, forcing me to hard reset it. I think that this is either simply because of old components, overheating, or lack of performance. Or a mixture of the three.
      Now, I'd rather not spend money on a different sim if it's just going to do the same, but, do you perhaps have any other ideas or solutions for me? Also, what are your recommended quad/gravity/physics settings for the DRL sim to make it as realistic as possible??

    • @JohnEFly
      @JohnEFly  Před 7 lety

      Sounds like your computer is likely overheating. Is it really old? Do you clean out the lint and fans at all? Perhaps some other issue?
      Regarding realism, I wouldn't expect it to be too realistic. Keep in mind DRL quads are 800-930g beasts. They won't control like the quads that you and I fly on a daily basis. The simulator is intended to simulate those massive weights. Personally I just play DRL and enjoy it, and it helps me with understanding the mechanics of flight even if the way the momentum and drag aren't exactly right. It still helps.

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster Před 7 lety

      It is old, and the components aren't the best, especially by today's standards. I said that in my last post. But, anyway, the specific components are a Dell XPS 420 base with a Q6600 quad core at 2.4ghz, mismatch 4gb total of DDR2 ram, and a GT430 2gb graphics card along with a slowish 300gb hard drive.
      To be clear, it STILL did this even on the day I took the whole thing apart and washed out all the fans and heatsink fins. Its record to date is about 45-50 minutes of use on the DRL sim before blackscreening.

Personally if I wanted something cheaper I would get a fatshark transformer. $230-250 includes hd resolution and built in diversity. Plus it can be used as a monitor. It's a bit larger and heavier than true fatshark goggles though. I've heard decent things about some of the $100-$120 box style goggles too. Plus you can get something with DVR in that price range from eachine that may work for you.
