  • Who Killed John Wayne?
Cancer Crime Stories episode two, The Downwinders.
People often ask me how long it takes to put together a podcast episode.
On average, about ten to twelve hours per episode.
But in the case of this week's podcast, it's closer to forty hours! Oh my gosh, this story-once I started researching, I couldn't stop!
Did you know that the US government detonated 928 nuclear bombs in our country? The people who live "downwind" have exponentially high cancer rates.
I first heard about Downwinders a couple of years ago. And once I heard about it, I couldn't "un-hear" the tragic story.
Then, of course, the Academy Award-winning movie Oppenheimer came out, and finally, people started asking questions about the nuclear bomb denotations in our country.
Then I discovered the craziest of all crazy stories about John Wayne and a movie he filmed in Southern Utah (near the site of a US nuclear bomb explosion).
Out of the 220 people who worked on the film, 95 became sick with cancer, and many died, including the film's two stars, John Wayne and Susan Hayward.
And it gets even weirder: Howard Hughes, yes, that Howard Hughes, produced the film. He was so distraught about so many people dying after the completion of filming that he spent 12 million dollars buying copies of the movie so that it would never be shown again in public.
For all of my crime-loving friends, you've got to listen to this episode!
