Hi Steve, Just discovered your channel and am enjoying watching how you’ve gone about renovating your old van. I’ve got an old Viscount Ambassador 15ft late 60s or early 70s that needs a birthday. I’m learning lots from watching, so thanks. I’ve been watch lots of vintage caravan renovation videos and I notice most window repair jobs show it as not too hard to get windows out if it’s the original dried and crumbling mastic, but if someone has previously use silicone or sickaflex to reseal the windows it’s horrible to get the windows out and to clean the silicone or sickaflex off. So I don’t understand why all these videos then turn around and use silicone or sickaflex to reseal windows, ensuring that the next person has a horrible time getting the windows out and cleaning the frames. Why isn’t mastic tape used to seal the windows?
Another thing, you said that the butterfly hinges you used to hang one of your windows was as difficult to get as rocking-horse poop, but what was it about those specific hinges that precluded you from using some other hinge? You fixed some other hinges to do another job later in the video.

My favourite tool ever, only an evil bay el cheapo but it’s fine over 12 vans and still working well. Air tools are awesome.

Hi Steve, the van's coming along really nicely and looking more retro by the week what with all that polished alloy. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Hey Pedro, we will have it finished this week but we are a few episodes behind. We shoot paint this week which are super funky 1950’s colours! Thanks for your comment 👍👍

Thanks John, I’ll give it a go, I have tried to keep the channel more on my work/professional persona and pitched at the semi instructional content but I hear you and will stop editing all my tongue in check comments I usually make 😃😃 I appreciate the feedback so thank you. We run about a month behind so you may not note a change for a few episodes.

Hey mate you wouldn’t happen to know where to get porthole windows from would you

You occasionally see them secondhand on the Carapark Caravan FB page but they are rare and sought after so expensive and they sell very fast. I have one but I am not keen to sell it.

Steve, we are renovating a 1970 Viscount Ambassador Alumvan, and are contemplating painting the window trims and the trims around the roof / edges of the van. Is this a bad idea and what sort of paint should we use if we are thinking of doing this ? Your advice would be appreciated .

Giday Darren, no its not a bad idea, give them a clean with aluminium cleaner (its and acid based cleaner) then mask them off and prime with an etch primer before topcoating with 2 x coats of enamel sprayed on.

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing your restoration skills. I have or replace all the glass in the Carapark 12'9" and wondering if needs to be toughened? Laminated? Thanks

You don’t happen to know where to get the spring hinges for the roof hatch do you? Mine broke removing the old ones.

Good Day, Wowww what a job. I have a 1068 Gypsey caravan from South Africa, I currently live in Botswana. The door and windows are really not closing and sealing properly.
Can you send me an email or whatzup number where I can maybe send some photos or short video clip, and maybe get some advice from you.

It is most likely 1- hinge placement, 2 - they have warped and will need flattening. My mail is vintagerestorationsaustralia@gmail.com
