I loved Dune as well, but to be honest, some scenes are too drawn out. Like that scene in the tent where both Paul and his mom are just staring at each other and crying for 5 minutes was kinda stupid and too long.

To the guy above me, unecessarily long is due to faults of writing, not due to it being long. Kids these days don't have a attention span anymore. Also, Americans don't seem to go to the movies for a good story experience, but for a cheap thrill ride. To the point I would say, go to the amusement park.

  • @AndreFarrar

I know what the deal was with Dune Part 1. It was all about story building. Mostly, dialogue and plot development with sparse action. We saw this with Harry Potter: Deathly Hallows Part 1. It was "slow" only because it was building up to the action-packed finale of Deathly Hallows Part 2.

    • @michaelambrosinofilm
      @michaelambrosinofilm Před 3 měsíci +7

I might be in whatever small minority of people who actually thinks Deathly Hallows Part 1 is not only better than Part 2, but the second-best Potter movie (right behind Prisoner of Azkaban). I think Part 1 is incredible and it's really one of the only Potter movies that FEELS dangerous. The tone is incredible - very ominous and dark. It's drenched with this genuine sense of doom that, in my opinion, none of the other movies have.

Everyone has been trying to adapt Dune, it’s complex , read first book as a young kid in the 80s. I loved 1984 Dune , but they didn’t have the tech or budget to do it right . We now have a director , with the vision , budget and of course is a student of Ridley Scott …the first movie was epic , what it needed to be. This will be like Blade Runner , a movie talked about in film history, as the greatest adaptation of maybe the most famous book. Not just SW, but Wheel of Tine so many took things from Dune , just happy to be here at a time to see it .

I read the book for the first time in 1970, so I am VERY familiar with the novels. The problem with that is that it is too easy to fall into the trap of only paying attention to the differences instead of the "big picture". I fell into that trap when the first Lord Of The Rings movie came out, but after the closing credits of Return Of The King, I saw the whole breadth of Jackson's vision. Same deal here. I am so over the moon about this Dune movie(s), it is the novel of my childhood and to see it treated so reverentially just makes me grateful to D. Villeneuve.
Book 2 - Dune Messiah is reportedly in the works, should only take 1 movie.

What today's movie goers need is an appreciation course in cinema. Movies are not supposed to be fast and slow for the audiences' liking, it's pace should be appropriate for it's story. In my experience, when I speak with someone that found Dune (2021) boring, they almost always saw it outside of a large format theater experience i.e at home, on a plane, etc. Seeing that movie with the largest screen and the greatest sound is such a beast it is hard to feel anything other than awe. I saw it three times in IMAX when it was initially released and it was an experience that was hard to even describe. Saw it again a week or two ago on the re-release and was even more blown away. I have seen it countless times at home on my 4K blu-ray and although I do have a pretty stellar home theater setup, it undoubtedly loses a bit of the shock and awe of an IMAX screening. I took my sister to see the re-release and she was floored.

Loved the first part, luckily got to see it again in IMax a couple of weeks ago. I think Kristian is probably correct to call them one single film, the way Lord of the Rings is. I can't wait to see the next chapter this weekend.

I'm crushed part 2 isn't getting a stereo conversion. The first film is breathtaking in 3D, like Villeneuve's other stereo film (2049).

I just watched a 40th anniversary showing on the David Lynch Dune, and its not too bad honestly. The issue is that the Harkonens are ridiculous compared to the rest of the story and that the last 40 minutes speed run the source material, but the first hour and a half is solid.

Can't wait to see it, but the marketing is biased! Men get a bucket to go home and "play with", women get no 8 inch sand worm to errrr, "admire" and errr "play with". Zaflertenflouse needs to fly in from Germany and get on it, the patent that is, for the 8 inch sand worm. His wife and millions of women around the world will remember/thank him for it.

As a long time Herbert fan, I liked the first one but found it a bit superficial as they left so many things out! Already have my ticket for this one. I plan to watch it in 70mm, IMAX and regular to see how different the experience is.

Dune 1 was fantastic, amazing soundtrack , cinematics truely a epic sci film, with good actors and directing. I've been waiting for this movie for so long only a week away so happy man can't wait to see this on big screen. Then ultimate, I hope and pray they release a uncut edition epic like how LOTR did. Just sit and watch at home the full uncut movie epic probably be like 8-9 hours i bet.

I thought the opposite. I thought that older version was just as weird as it needed to be. The newer version looks more Star Warsy and less weird. The guild navigator floating in the tank, the body shields, gaudy sets

My father got me to read Dune when I was 12 years old. LOVED IT! I went on to read every novel set in the Dune universe, including the ones written by Frank Herbert's son. So when the Lynch movie came out in 1984, I used my enthusiasm for Dune to convince several of my friends to go see the movie with me. I absolutely HATED it! And my friends didn't like it either, but their dislike wasn't as strong as mine, because they had never read any of the novels, and so didn't realize how much the Lynch movie distorted the story, and the world itself. P.S. The "gom jabbar" scene in the Lynch movie was absolute perfection. Other parts of the movie were OK, but those OK scenes, and the one phenomenal scene couldn't even come close to saving the Lynch movie as a whole.

I'm seeing it on 2/25. Can't wait. I'm a ridiculous old Dune nerd and have read the book 8 times (the first time was last century.) Hate the Lynch version with the fury of a thousand suns. How dare a director be too lazy to not read the source material and then think they know better. LOVED Part 1. Really looking forward to Part 2. I completely trust Villeneuve and WB needs to greenlight Dune Messiah immediately.

I saw Dune 2 in Imax this morning at 3:15AM and it was awesome!!! Game Of Thrones meets Star Wars. It's everything I wished Star Wars had grown up to be, instead of a story stuck in its infancy and afraid to truly evolve.

Even having not seen the second dune movie yet, I've compared these two dune movies to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2. The first one is a bit of a slow burn, and then the second part is a massive climax. Some people would think that comparing the first dune to deathly hallows part 1 is an insult, but I personally think very highly of both movies. The thing about Harry Potter though, is that it had been going for years, and had a half dozen installments under its belt. The series had secured an audience so it wasn't a risk to expect such patience from them. Dune on the other hand was the first in a series, and it was very brave of them to not do anything cheap to keep your attention. But to trust you to stay attentive anyway.

For me nobody was better than Rebecca Ferguson. Menacing performance. After the water of life scene she stole every scene for me.
