The characters age in real time, noodle is the girl, 2-D is the singer, Russell plays drums and Murdoc usually plays bass but he got arrested so Ace from powerpuff girls is covering for him

Oh there was always a girl in Gorillaz. (Her name is Noodle, BTW) She just looks different from older videos because she's grown up.
Ace (the bassist) replaced Murdoc because he went to jail, and the guitarist is Noodle, who is a girl and was always in their band. 2-D is the singer and Russel is the drummer.
Don’t forget that Ace was originally in the Powerpuff Girls before he joined the band. That’s why he never spoke. Gorillaz count afford what Cartoon Network wanted for his voice actor

One of the brains behind Gorillaz, Damon Albarn is the Singer/Main Vocalist for the British music group Blur. One multi talented musician. Big fan of both Blur and Gorillaz :D

They’ve won/been nominated for awards before, the animator (Jamie Hewlett) animates the characters of the band accepting the award or doing a thank you thing. Damon Albarn (singer/leader) I think gets the award along with Jamie Hewlett

Gorrilaz has won Music Awards before, what they do is have the real-life creators some and pick it up on stage, but when the whole "thank you" acceptance speech is supposed to happen, they play a video of the Team (Or just of Murdock the off and on leader of the band) saying thank you as a kind of "skype call" to the audience.
For why they use the band, it was an easy way for the Creators to work around Gorillaz biggest strength...and weakness. Their inconsistency of style and genre of music. In real life, the two creators are not fans of musical stagnation (they had a whole documentary about it and the Gorillaz) and so they bring on other creators and bands to work with them for a single or two, then move onto the next team. It would be very confusing if every time you saw the band, the members were always different, so they brought a sense of Stability to the group by instead having four (sometimes five if you count Russel's ghost) reccurring members whom fan could grow attached to.
Then for fun, they created a fictional universe loosely connected to ours, where the Gorillaz are constantly up to various band-related mischief (usually because of Murdock) getting in trouble for it, and then having to run from their mistakes....all the while making music the entire time.
Each character has a cultivated backstory, personality, and goals they want to achieve through being a part of Gorillaz, and they love to interact with their fan when they can.
In fact they once starred on MTV cribs! where they gave a showing of their studio, their living spaces, and a little peek into their personal lives. :)
