Here's another one: What if the original Scooby WAS Scrappy! Seriously, this was actually a REAL possibility! In addition to the Sheepdog, a third option was a "small feisty dog", and this may well be what they dusted off 10 years later as Scrappy! So he might be more "original' to the concept of Scooby than we realize! (Other predecessors to Scrappy were the little chick in "Jeepers It's the Creeper', and the frog in "Mamba Wamba". And of course, Scooby Dum. It seems things had been brewing for a sixth member of the gang for some time! He was especially needed after the Scooby Doo Show era, when Fred and the Girls were off to themselves more, and Shaggy and Scooby became largely the comedy relief). Also, the whole sheepdog thing WAS spoofed again in the 13 Ghosts (in addition to Scooby Goes Hollywood), in the episode "It's A Wonderful Scoob", when Scooby quits the business, and is then replaced by a dopey St. Bernard named Bernie. That's the one where the whole world, led by Ronald Reagan, had to persuade Scooby to come back!) And I agree. If Scrappy was never introduced, then the show would have ended, but then picked up with a Pup Named Scooby anyway, because they were doing younger versions of all the major shows at that point. So they definitely would have brought Scooby back, and then Cartoon Network is where he regained popularity, leading up to Zombie Island.
I don’t think the franchise would have continued if Scrappy was introduced first. I think it would have gone for a season and completely ended. I forgot about the St. Bernard in 13 Ghosts, they should have made it a sheepdog lol. I still think Scooby would have continued without Scrappy. Maybe there would have been a few years we wouldn’t have seen any series, but like you said Pup would have happened regardless of Scrappy and then it would have gone from there.
My favorite Scooby-Doo movies I've seen but don't have are: 1. Camp Scare 2. Music of the Vampire 3. Stage Fright 4. Brave and the Bold 5. Alo Hah 6. The Blue Falcon 7. Chill Out 8. Trick or Treat
I believe different things keep saving the franchise. Imo Scrappy, the four 90s animated films ,the first live action movie and Scoobynatural all did their job in keeping it out there and alive .
There does seem to be quite a few possibilities for what saved the franchise or it was just a mix of them all. I just hope we can go back to better Scooby series and movies and get away from parodying the gang.
I think Scooby-Doo: Where Are You was the right move for a start. The song itself has become so iconic that a lot of movies today still use that song. Had it not been the start, things probably would have been very different.
That was a very interesting scenarios of "what ifs". And personally, I think Frank Welker as Shaggy and Casey Kasem as Freddy would have been a major flop.

I wouldn’t be here if Scrappy was never a thing to the franchise because he was the only reason that made me a Scooby Fan and I know of another Sheep dog Cartoon those looney Tunes cartoons of Sam Sheepdog and Ralph Wolf which are petty enjoyable cartoons 🙂

They made a good choice with Where Are You and how they did it. No one that worked on it expected Scooby to last as long as it has.
It's one of the longest running franchises in history. A lot of of people still like the IP today. It's Hannah Barbara's most successful.
