Top Tips For Plein Air Painting Competitions! | *plus* NEW SERIES TEASER

- Have you ever heard of plein air painting events or competitions? I did my first one ever at the Auburn Strokes painting event in Auburn Nebraska. A plein air painting event is essentially a week long painting marathon where you can do urban sketching and plein air painting around a specific area or location. The term “competition” is used loosely here because while there are prizes and often the paintings are judged, (this even was judged by the fantastic artist and person @deborahjoygroesser) I found that while each artist is hopeful to win a prize, there’s a spirit of camaraderie and that the main thing is to focus on the experience itself. I’ll tell you my story of my first time and give some tips I discovered along the way.
PLUS, there’s going to be an exciting teaser for my upcoming series on plein air painting and sketching through local historic landmarks in my city! I’m very excited to share this with you so stay to the end to see that!

You popped up on my recommended page and the title sounded interesting. Congratulations. Selling 3 paintings too wow! I’ve never gone to a plein air event. I’m a gouache and watercolor painter. I find that gouache comes much easier for me than oil. But I appreciate the way you explained the entire event. They seem very intimidating to me. But one day maybe I will.
Thanks Sharon! I do gouache a lot too! I’ve kinda been favoring it over oil lately but I still love them both. And to be honest I’ve done a couple of events and I always feel a little pressure just because you know it’s a little out of the ordinary you know? But I figure even if you don’t sell anything it’s a great opportunity to meet other artists, to maybe paint a new landscape you’ve never seen and to potentially sell some works.
Depending on your location you might find a smaller event just to dip your toes in and see how it goes. That’s what this one was for me. I really enjoyed doing the plein air event in De Smet SD. If that’s a travelable area to you. Very relaxed and fun. Great way to meet folks and an awesome sale. I didn’t win any prizes but I sold several paintings and met a bunch of great folks. Plein air magazine also publishes events by state so you could start there and see if there’s any that are of interest to you.
Congrats on you winning painting keep it up.
Thank you! I really needed that encouragement today!
So glad your experience was such a good one, and congratulations on your awards and sales. Your new project sounds exciting; I'm looking forward to watching it.
Thanks so much for telling me about it Kari! I’m excited for the series too! I got s lot of editing to do!
That teaser at the end! 🔥🔥🔥
It’s all CG 🤣
Most wonderful to have crossed paths with you in Auburn. I look forward to your new series! Happy painting. 😀
Same to you Priscilla! I wish I would’ve had the forethought to get some videos of your work and maybe interview you! (I wasn’t initially planning on making this video) I’ve been thinking a lot about your tips for cold weather painting and I’m definitely going to give them a try. Love seeing your stuff on Instagram. Keep it up! You’re doing great work. 😊
@@DannySabraArt you inspire me. 😀
@@priscillaportenier3962 thank you!
I used to do music too:) - finally this year I decided to go back to art - it'd been calling me for years I think. New to plein air - did a couple last week - looking forward to getting into the mountains this summer and seeing what I can do. I really appreciate the advice/friendly narrative on your channel - really encouraging and generous...thanks.
That’s so cool! What instrument do you play? I JUST came from painting in the mountains of Colorado.. a lifelong dream of mine. Those videos will be up in the next few weeks hopefully. It’s all about the experience. Even if the paintings don’t turn out how we’d like there’s nothing better than being in nature and observing what’s around us!

I play a few things - mainly keys - produced production music for a few years - and had a band for a while when I lived in uk - cranium pie (there's some daft videos about on yt:)
@@robinaart72 I’ll check it out!
@@DannySabraArt haha, ok bud:) madman running through the fields cover we did is praps a fun way to start:)
This is one of my goals for 2022, to enter into an art competition or 2. 😳
Just checking in to make sure you’re ok. Hope all is well, I know you said you had some things going on. Thinking about you and your family. 🙏
Thanks MoMo! You absolutely should! Plein air magazine just put out a list of all the major plein air events this coming year. If you’re unsure though and wouldn’t mind the trip I do highly recommend Auburn Strokes. It’s laid back enough and friendly enough that anyone can do it and I’m really glad it was my first foray into it. Things are starting to be better with my family. It’s been a ruthless 6 weeks though and it’s just been really hard to switch back into CZcams mode. I’m going to try to get back into it soon though. I feel like I owe all of you who have been following and so kind for so long. Hopefully soon. Maybe this week or next if I can get my self in gear. It’s hard when you stop everything for a crisis. It’s hard to just go back to the way things were. It all takes a big toll.
@@DannySabraArt Danny you don’t owe us anything. You need to take care of you and your family. We don’t blame you at all. I was just wanting to check in. I’m glad your doing ok. Keep on marching on. When your ready we will all still be here ☺️ but praying for you and your family for sure. This is a rough time of year to be going through things.
@@momopaints thank you so much. Your prayers are greatly appreciated. Yeah it’s been a bittersweet end of the year. But there’s much to be thankful for and I’m trying to just focus on one day at a time.
@@DannySabraArt sometimes that’s all we can do. One step at a time and one day at a time. Take care of you and your family for now.
@@momopaints Thank you♥
I can not understand very good, but congratulations for win the contest👏👏

@@DannySabraArt Thankyou :)
@@BlancaVarguesArt you’re welcome!
@@taitpreis1074 you should go for it! If you’re really unsure just try drawing outside! It’s such a great experience and don’t put pressure on yourself, just enjoy it! It’s really so nice to be outside and connect with nature. I get if you try it you’ll get hooked. ✌️
