The dreaded Check Engine Light. That comes on, it's going to be a problem. Most of us have heard that if the light goes on, we can go to the auto parts store and they can read the code for free. But the whole ploy is to get you to buy stuff while you're there, and an unscrupulous salesperson might try to sell you stuff you don't need, that won't fix the problem.
Not to mention, they can't even clear the code for you. Wouldn't it be a heck of a lot easier to be able to read that code out yourself? Now you can, nice and inexpensively with the LAUNCH Creader 3008 PLUS OBDII Scan Tool. Color backlit display is easy to read even in direct sunlight. Also has a convenient I/M button that will allow you to access the readiness monitors of your car. Most cars 2001 and newer are allowed to have one system not ready, and if you get to that point, you can get your car inspected and pass.
This is a basic level scan tool; if you're looking to read out and erase the code, you can do it with this. It's much more convenient to do it yourself, and be armed with the knowledge of the code and what might be wrong, rather than drive out of your way to the auto parts store, where they'll try to sell you things you don't need. Or, you might very well catch your mechanic in a lie, wanting to charge hundreds and hundreds of dollars for work they were never going to do. Armed with the knowledge, that's no longer a concern.

First handheld scan tool I ever got was a LAUNCH Creader. It's still around and working today.

How do you know if you need to replace your Abby-Normal bat-ray? ;-) Nice little code scanner but be careful - buying one of these usually leads to having more than one that can do slightly different things.... Also - a lot of shops will still want to charge you a diag fee if you have a CEL (Check Engine Light) but at least you have a good idea if something really needs to be addressed or if it's something that (like you said) is mostly an annoyance.

By using a Battery tester/analyzer. I have reviewed several of them. I ought to hook it up and see how it's doing.
Yes, they all have little nuances or things that one can do over another, and it's hard to find one that has everything. There have been one or two that have crossed my path that have a black and white LCD display, and those are actually better for plain old raw numbers, and usually faster as well, because there's no graphical conversion with the slow video chip.
The diag fee for them is a quick buck, reading out the same P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire code that you did. Decent shops will absorb the cost of that in the event you have them fix it.

      1. At almost 14 minutes in length, this was a _fairly comprehensive review._ If the tool had such functionality, you can bet I would have shown that. It would be a FEATURE, which would make the product more enticing to buy.
      2. You could have watched the entirety of the video, where at the end I say that there will be a link in the video description to the product on Amazon, and viewed that information to find out.
      3. You are expecting $400 performance out of a scan tool that costs $40.
      4. I learned how to drive on a car with manual everything. ABS is unnecessary for someone who is skilled with driving.
