The Outside Lights At Night (2024)
Originally recorded June 7, 2024.
Now, to enjoy my own personal oasis at night, all of the solar lights come on automatically. It totally transforms the backyard. Enough light to see, dark enough to stay secluded. When the string lights are included in this, it is fantastic. With the new lights around the rhododendron bush, it is unsurpassed!

Originally recorded June 7, 2024. I had spent most of my time outside over the past few weeks. And after all that, look at the oasis I have created! Made it all worth it! Related videos: Urlitoy 22 LED Solar Motion Sensin...

    I know that lights always look better in person than on camera, but having said that, I do like the fence lights, those are my favourite. The bush lights - the RGB perhaps not so much but they did morph into a sort of autumnal set of colours - I quite liked that! Looks more natural I suppose. Warm white on the bush would probably look amazing too. But like I said - completely different in person. Enjoy it for summer!

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před dnem

      Oh absolutely, 1000% looks way better in person. I happen to like the RGB on the bush, always wanted a pop of color there to offset the rest. I had these tiny lights there, solar ones, in previous years. Also had a nice set of RGB solar lights I was considering putting there, but this set came along, it's wifi, I just so happened to have a spare outlet, it was a natural fit! And yes, the warm white looks great too for a change of pace. Had the fence lights on red, white, and blue for a few weeks and it was great, but now it's back to white. I'll leave the lamppost in the front red, white, and blue until Labor Day, then change it back.

    4:21 Putting that much force on the filter may be abusing your plumbing. Abused plumbing might be very bad, so it might be prudent to remove the lid and twist the cap off without torquing the entire filter. the filter body is not screwed into the pavement, it's just sitting there, so The only thing keeping it from twisting is your plumbing.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před dnem

      There's no way the strap wrench is going to snap 2-in PVC pipes. If it had a 6-foot handle, oh yes. Removing the lid would have been an idea, and also a lot more work.

  • @TheLarryBrown
    @TheLarryBrown Před dnem

    4:21 Look at the size of that guy's hands. The force he uses is what I had to use also on mine. It shouldn't be that hard to twist. One thing that might be wrong is after market O-rings that are slightly too thick. Leslie's sells the genuine Hayward o-rings for $42, an astonishing rip-off and enough reason to switch brands away from Hayward. They also sell a "Leslie's" brand O-ring for 1/3rd that price. When you assemble your air cap, lube the o-rings with more lube than usual and that may help future disassembly.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před dnem

      Yeah I have big hands. My wife has small hands, which is great because it makes _ME_ look bigger. This was the original air-relief valve on this filter, never removed or replaced before, so it was all original with genuine Hayward parts. These days, Hayward parts are a ripoff. So are the prices at Leslie's, even with their own brand stuff. Online, you can find a plethora of (mostly) compatible, off-brand parts that will save you an absolute fortune.

    Fantastic video and waaaay out of the box thinking. I've always wanted to break my filter open and inspect for overcharging, you beat me to it by several decades. Nice work. Here are some thoughts: I'm shocked at the level of crud left after your backwash. That really seems unexpected. I can think of several reasons why it might be doing that: * No pool equipment is designed to work with a green pool. If you ever get a green pool it would be expected that you would need to break the filter down after the pool is clear for a thorough wash. Your green crud shows that you had a green pool, which you also stated. Even the top of the line DE filter has its limits, and that limit is short of a green pool. * You appear to be over charging your filter with DE. That clumped up DE we see in between grids, and even DE bridges between grids indicate that you are overcharging. This appears to be a DE4820, so you should be using 7 pounds DE to start, and maybe 5 pounds after every backwash. * Possibly you have aftermarket grids with an inferior fabric and if you had first quality grids maybe they would be backwashing better. * Perhaps you have some tears in your grids. If you have that it will allow the backwash waster to escape the grid too easily, In particular the front, most visible grid in the video is badly caked with crud that survived the backwash. If there is a tear just opposite that side of the grid that may account for no water pressure available there to backwash that crud off. * Perhaps you ran your filter too long with no DE charge. Doing that will allow crud to embed itself in the fabric and it then it won't backwash off. The general rule is to run the pump no longer than a minute or two without a DE charge in there. * Perhaps your pump is not making enough pressure to do a proper backwash. There could be various reasons a pump is not making as much pressure as might be needed, like a leaking suction plumbing. Another reason would be running a variable speed pump at too low an RPM. In particular when you ran the pump in backwash with the lid off, I expected to see water gushing out of the grids, but I saw no water at all. However that might be because without the lid in place the water level isn't forced up to the top of the grids. Running the pump with the lid off was an inspired idea. I would have never thought to do that. However, I did not see the backwash action that I expected so I'm not sure if running the pump with the lid off demonstrated to us anything useful about your system operation. Two comments about dis/assembly: Always prefer power tools when possible. I have found that if jobs can be made easier, even just a little bit, it makes a big difference. Especially if you're going to do this job regularly, and especially because you want to minimize work, using a cordless screwdriver as a nut driver on the steel band would be faster and easier than the ratcheting wrench, and just a little ease can make the difference. Also the Hayward manual instructs not to lube the large o-ring. I don't know why not. *

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před dnem

      That's what I do here, I always think outside the box, come up with my own ideas, and follow them. You won't know until you try, is my motto, so I go ahead with them after thinking them through. If I recall, this was after a REALLY bad winter (green) pool, it took lots and lots of backwashing and recharges to help get rid of. It was only that particular year that was so bad, and I was not the only one in the same predicament, many other pool owners I know had the same issue. 7 pounds to start and 5 after backwash? I do 4 pounds, that's about it. But again, this was repeated backwashing, several times a week with a day or two where I did it twice in a day. I had replaced the grids rather recently (within 2 years if I recall) with a genuine Hayward grid assembly. Therefore, no tears in the grids, and didn't run it long without DE, as I know way better than to do that. Leaking suction plumbing would result in bubbles being delivered at the return jets back in the pool. There were none, so no leaky plumbing. Running it with the cover off was basically just for fun, not really meant to demonstrate anything. Helped to get more crud out I suppose. As powerful as the pump is, and as much water as it moves, when faced with a large reservoir such as the volume of the filter, it still takes a few seconds (which can be a very long time) for it to fill. Everything is definitely operating up to snuff, it was this ONE time I had to clean them after a lot of heavy backwashing due to exceptionally bad conditions, all out of my control. My friend is a huge proponent of that way of thinking with power tools. I don't know of a screw in his house that isn't stripped out. When I was a computer technician, all of the other techs had electric screwdrivers and oftentimes they'd come to me with a screw they stripped out, asking if I could remove it. I always did, by hand. All of the work I did was strictly by hand as well. Never had a stripped or broken screw over 10,000 computers--that I had damaged. Powel tools are great for other tasks, sanding, burnishing, grinding, drilling, sawing, things of that nature. I also love my electric impact wrench for the lug nuts on the car--but you can guarantee that I put those lug nuts on at 76 ft-lbs--the specification for my car--with a torque wrench. One thing I do know about the largo o-ring is that it must be perfectly clean--top and bottom--and the mating surfaces of the filter--for it to seal without a leak. Lubing it isn't a bad idea.

      @jaykay18 Před 2 dny

      I actually did the screens on the west side of the room years ago. I always hated metal screens because they were always getting stiff and sometimes even rusty, so I decided to use fiberglass screen instead. That was a mistake, it didn't last. Birds sometimes fly into it thinking it's not there. Their beaks punch holes in it. One day yes, it would be nice to redo them. Better still would be to sort of more enclose it. Next door did that when the previous people were still there. Came out fairly nice. But still seems like a frivolous waste of money; it's meant to be enjoyed spring, summer, and fall; boxing it in like that only gives you one more season, and all you're going to see is snow, snow, and snow. And would probably make it hotter in the spring and summer.

      The bulbs have 2 filaments, a low intensity one that would be on when the parking lights and/or headlights are on--that's when it's lit up. When you turn the blinker on, it flashes the high intensity filament while leaving the other one on, so it goes dim, bright, dim, bright. Check the other side and you will see what I mean. If that high intensity filament burns out, it will no longer flash. Conversely, the low intensity filament could go out, in which case it wouldn't light up with the parking lights and/or headlights, but will still signal when the blinker is on.

I do wonder given the fact it's kind of in a little hidey hole behind the monitor and under the cabinets if your speed and reach (i.e. to the fence line where you need it) could be improved by bringing it out, so to speak. For example, if your ethernet cable has some slack (which I think it does...) could you bring it up and put it on top of your kitchen cabinets? I realise there's no power there but nothing a short extension cord couldn't fix.

Out back works 95% of the time, as opposed to more like 60% of the time as it was. Next plan of attack, after trying yours, is a different access point, "my biggest gun" so to speak, to simply replace that thing. That's the next least invasive strategy. Barring that, running another Ethernet cable out back and placing one of them little square guys I showed in the previous video will probably do the trick. But for now, it's enough.

I have a couple of lamps I want to come on at the same time, in different spots. Timers can't do that, but a routine can. Jay, question, in the shot where you plugged in the Comfast device into power and ethernet...there was a analogue clock in shot which looked to be plugged into the bank of outlets?? Kind of like a night light style but a clock. Did I see that correctly?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před 5 dny

      Thanks. This one really got me frustrated! That's another reason I hate Apple--they dumbed everything down to Mickey-Mouse levels, so dumb that you can't do anything (at least easily), and that makes the experience frustrating. It's funny you mention that! Years ago when I first went to The Sharkie Tank on Long Island, they had 2 lamps that were on the floor, one at each end of the giant window in the room. They pointed upwards and it was just an accent lighting technique. On either side was an outlet, and plugged into each one was a timer, both set to come on at say, 7PM. There was nothing there in the way, and nobody walked there. So I said to Sharkie that it's impossible to synchronize those timers and he agreed and said they come on within a few minutes of each other. And I'm saying to myself "This doesn't make a lot of sense. A house like that and this is the best you can get?" What I would have done was gotten a couple of cheap extension cords and plugged both of them into the same timer. Problem solved and they both come on automatically. While smart plugs were around at this time, they were still in their infancy. These days, they are commonplace. And in fact, there are 4 smart-controlled devices in my living room, and they are on a routine. And they come one within a couple seconds of each other, so it's still not an exact science. Yes, you did! That's an IKEA #99919 Indiglo Analog Clock. Good luck finding info on it, I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. 2 years ago the battery in it went dead and I made a video about it, but that video hasn't been released. Wait, what, battery but it plugs in? Yeah. I think we have one IKEA here, and we went there once when we first got our apartment. Nothing appealed to us really. I bought that and maybe one other item. There were some small end table accent lamps that I am still kicking myself for not buying, but furniture-wise, there was nothing we ere interested in. Haven't been back since. But I bought that clock. I was sorely disappointed with it to find that it had a battery. The battery runs a plain old quartz clock movement. It plugs in so the electroluminescent display lights up. That's it. Perhaps that's another reason I never went back to IKEA.

      @@jaykay18 Apple...I got a free iMac a couple of years back. They previous owners had wiped it so just needed to be setup with a fresh account. Apple made it IMPOSSIBLE to do that, basically bricked it. There were some other options I recall, but it involved going into the BIOS, which I am okay with, except for the fact that to get into the BIOS you must use an Apple keyboard, a regular keyboard won't work. And I didn't have that kind so it had just been sitting. Yea, I could do the extension cord thing too and it is the simplest and cheapest solution but it would also look a bit ugly. Actually by the time I go and buy an extension cord long enough the smart plug is probably the same price these days. Oh wow, that does sound disappointing. Would have been way better if the whole thing worked off the plug. Or at least used the battery as a backup. Although I suppose it was cheaper to manufacture this way.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 Před 5 dny

      @@ZCount A-HA! Exactly my point! Somebody gave me one as well, it's been sitting, never even tried to turn it on. Though I will say, that just for fun, many years ago when the first Imac in all those colors came out, I took the Apple USB keyboard and plugged it into a Compaq that was sitting nearby, and it worked. Just to see how universal USB was. Maybe not all the keys mapped, but you could type "hello" if you had to. That's the same thing I said at the Sharkie Tank. "Oh, don't want a cord running across there". "Yeah but nobody walks there, nobody will even see it." <dead air> Years later, Sharkie's parents decided to get rid of those lamps, and he knew immediately that I might be interested so he rescued them. Since the day I hooked them up, they've been on the same extension cord. Guaranteed to go on at the same time. I had them on a plug-in timer, video has been made, not released, but recently switched them over to a smart plug because I got a new set in from China. I couldn't tell with it in the package, but definitely would have been way better if it all worked off the plug, which was my main intention on buying it. I felt very cheated when I learned the battery ran the clock. The device sat in a box in our apartment, I never used it for years and years. It came to the house with us, still never used it. It's too small to be useful unless the outlet is high up on the wall like in a bathroom (at least here in the US). And even then, a standard outlet will only accept 2 plugs, one for a nightlight, the other left available for a shaver or hairdryer or somesuch device, so the clock doesn't have a home. It surfaces in an archaeological dig some time back so I put it there. I've actually looked at it a couple times since it's been there.

Absolutely. Am I using it to its full potential? Absolutely not. But for what I need it to do, it’s fantastic, and I actually know what I’m doing unlike some average consumers. If you have to, make sure you have the least number of hops, the least number of "boostas" and make it as close to a wire as possible.

I went with that system because no amount of cursing, pleading, or hand grenades would make a difference. Other than the smart devices, “smart”phones, the stupid inkjet, and a computer or two, I tend to wire everything in the house. Phone system? Wired. My computer? Wired. I even finally got brave enough to run an Ethernet line into the garage. What’s it for? Who knows. But it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I’m eventually going to run some phone line out there and hang an old Western Electric on the wall. TP-Link (Toilet Paper Link) makes a WiFi Boostah with a smart plug built in. Those have Ethernet ports on them. That’s great! Now everyone can have 25 Boostahs clogging up the air. I’m really surprised nobody’s just made a generic smart plug with an Ethernet port on it. I unplugged that to see if that the problem but unfortunately no. We ended up moving from cable and Verizon and went to a netgear router. That router worked great.
