  • Fraps, my Tegus, health has been quite a roller coaster lately. A lot has gone on but in this video we will cover the full details of what happened, changes I made, and what the future holds. I said this in the video, but I take full responsibility for any mistakes I made and hope you can learn from them.

    ★About Professor Herp★
    I started getting into the reptile hobby in February of 2018. My first reptile was my Bearded Dragon - Maxine Pegasus (creator of duel monsters btw). Since then, I have added five Yellow Ackie Monitors (Asus, Dell, LG, and two unnamed babies), a Chacoan Black and White Tegu (Frappuccino), a Crested Gecko (Destin), and a Russian Tortoise (Tortellini). I also have a dog named Thrall (yes, from World of Warcraft) who is a Dachshund/Chihuahua mix - aka a Chiweenie.
    My goal with this channel is to share my knowledge, experience and journey with other reptile/animal enthusiasts and become a better caretaker because of it. Hopefully I can learn a lot from the community through these videos.

    I had a tegu years ago that came down with the same symptoms yours did . the same swollen lower jaw plus he became lethargic and finally the last few inches of his tail started rotting. He finally passed away. I am almost positive I can chaulk it up to feeding him cat food about once a week as shortly after they recalled a lot of cat and dog food as animals were getting sick and dying. l since have aquired two other tegus which are over 10 years old and are doing just fine. I never fed them any canned cat or dog food.

      I'm not sure about it being dog/cat food. Know a lot of keepers whove successfully employed using cat/dog food. Guess it could depend on what dog/cat food though

    My tegu has a severely swollen lower lip. I just got him a month ago. He’s been on antibiotics (Ceftazedine 0.5ml) every 3 days. I feed him when he’s getting his shot and he doesn’t even notice. Because if there’s no food he’s not happy about the needle. My poor boy came from a home with improper diet and low UVB. He’s got a bunch of other health issues and may need a tail amputation but one step at a time I see the new changes making him stronger daily. Hope Frap feels 100% soon

    My tegu has this. It is said that its fatty lip. I see him sneeze so it could be allergies. My tegu is fine though. I'm not worried. If you are worried then definitely see the vet. I will not because its not needed.

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  Před 3 lety

      I would have an exotic vet check out the lip. Fatty lip is really not a real thing imo.

      @@ProfessorHerp well yeah, of course! If they will eat them then that's awesome! I mean, fruit was always a given. Never even thought of greens before, and frankly nobody I've ever spoken to about tegus talked about it. That's awesome!

    IME stomatitis and RI go hand in hand, especially if the stomatitis is unaddressed.

    Thx for this video :)
    Poor Frap and get better soon big boy :)
    i think a video on giving Frap his meds would be great.
    My little girl is causing me some concern, i tried the B complex and nothing :/ She is due to go into a shed again and we now have 2 layers of shed on tail. My vet is in isolation (corona virus) at the moment so i have to send over all the info and pics via email. Starting to think something else is going on with her and ur video raises my suspicions further.
    Its very interesting ur vet says give cooked meat and humidity on the high side, did she advise u let it dry out once per wk? My vet did. Did the vet say the exact basking temp and the T5%? Both mine are under 14% now, both also have a deep heat projector and basking bulbs running at 135 hottest part.
    I have just ordered bark and was considering making a boggy area with spaghant moss, neither use a bowl to soak which is frustrating lol

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  Před 4 lety +1

      Here's the meds vid: czcams.com/video/Cv7BRa9LZ3U/video.html
      She did not say to do any drying out. My feeling is there's not much basis to the whole drying out theory. The environments they thrive in almost always have very high humidity. She said my basking temp are good. (120-125F - which is lower than most guides but works well from what I've seen). I have a 14% on the right side about 15" from his back and a 12% about 12" from his back where the basking area is. I saw your FB and will get back to you there too.

    Hey I just got a tegu she’s a female. And I just saw this video. she has the same jaw problem should I be worried? I haven’t seen how she acts because she coming out of brumation.

    • @ProfessorHerp

      Best thing to do is go to a reputable exotic vet with reptile experience. I cannot really comment.

  • @LILBOOGsBUGCORNER
    @LILBOOGsBUGCORNER Před 4 lety +2

    From what i’ve learned, letting tegus free roam isn’t good. They need 80 to 100% ambient humidity in order to keep their respiratory system functioning correctly. If kept to low for to long they develop scale and respiratory issues. Inside their burrow, cave, or the wet side of the dirt underground it should be 100% humid at all times. I would toss a bunch of moss and reptibark, or orchid bark in there too! Im not sure if you have it bioactive or not but I would make sure there was all kind of life keeping all the nasty in check! Frap needs a lil more dirt too. I also use a 100 w Mega Ray MVB & a 100 w Deep heat Projector and a 50 w mini halogen. Basking Spot get’s to 130, hot side ambient is 95, Cool side is 80/84….
    Hope Frap recovers 100% Im sure your on top of it though!!!

      Thanks for the recommendations! I think I ultimately became to complacent with his husbandry which you should never do. We all have set backs from time to time though and I just hope to learn from this moving forward.

      Professor Herp Yessir!!! I feel you, I know you’ve had your hands full with the Ackies. One other thing I found was Smelt whole fish is better than cut up chunks of fish. I had some issues with my tegu prolapsing when he was younger and had to really address my husbandry & tegus diet.

  • @chuckfriebe843
    @chuckfriebe843 Před 3 lety +1

    When I saw your “after one year “ video, I noticed how wet the soil was. NOT GOOD! Too damn wet. Wet soil is a breeding ground for bacteria. Keep the soil somewhat damp, but not wet like you had it. Your UVB lamps are not close enough to the lizard. Respiratory infection is definitely from overly wet soil and humidity that is way to high. Humidity should be the same as an iguana. 60 to 70% is adequate. Also, you are using wood in the basking spot. Wood is porous and harbors bacteria. Basking spot should be rock or plastic.

    • @ProfessorHerp
      @ProfessorHerp  Před 3 lety

      Hi Chuck, thanks for sharing your thoughts. Wet soil would have caused skin related issues and was ruled out as a possible reason for the infection. The substrate is a good dampness imo. UVB placement does not seem to have caused any issues as well.

    • @kaylabranthoover2362
      @kaylabranthoover2362 Před 3 lety

      I agree with what u said that the soil and everything is fine for humidity but the wooden hide and basking spot in such a humid environment will rot and cause mold and bacteria and will harbor bacteria from other things becouse it's very porous
