  • After 120km I feel I have a pretty good impression of the Altra Timp 5 so here is my review. Both the Timp 5 and Timp Hiker were released, with the awesome Vibram outsole. This shoe is an amazing upgrade from the Timp 4. With the Mont Blanc Carbon coming out in the next months, I'm busy testing the latest trail running shoes by Altra of 2024.

    Just got the Timp 4 for my first trail race and they were great! Lots of people slipping and even falling on rocks but I only had some ankle roll scars but never completely injured. Got them thanks to your review, please keep at it

    Hi from Altra aficionados. Thanks for your review. Im waiting for the Timp 5 Gore Tex, cause I bought Timp4 in December, and got only few first runs in them.

    Great review as always. Completely agree, I feel the Timp4 are much more comfortable and forgiving. Also it annoys me they went back to the perforated thin numb insole which makes it quite harsh compared to Torin 7 which is now just so comfy you want to sleep in it ☺️

    I returned mine. Biggest issue was the reinforced part at the lower part of the laces sits lower than on other Altras and it digged into the top of my foot. I agree that overall the shoe feels stiff, but also of real good quality.

    Thanks for the video! Good review! For mud surfaces Inov8 Mudclaws or even X-Talon are excellent - the logs are 8mm deep and made or a very sticky rubber. I still prefer Vibram Megagrip outsoles (maybe a bit more aggressive than this one on the Timp's), my favourite is the outsole of the Topo Athletic - very versatile and effective on a lot of surfaces. By the way, the runner loop is a good idea for the issue with your toes - it does help!

      Thanks for the info! I'd love to get a pair of trail shoes that perform well in mud, so they do sound like good alternatives!

    So glad I bought a second pair of Timp 3s that are fresh in the box and ready to go when my current pair wears out. The 3rd Gen was perfect - basically a Lone Peak with more cushion. They can tackle anything - dirt, mud, rocks, tarmac. The Timps have now gone to the standard footshape rather than the original like they used to be. Altra needs to focus up and remeber what made them popular. All of their shoes should be original footshape.

    You ever thought about reviewing Topo shoes too? I just got the Topo Magnifly road shoe (zero drop) and MTN Racer 3 (5mm drop) which I'll be reviewing soon. I'm also looking forward to running in the Altra Timp 5 which seem nicely updated! The rebuilt upper and a Vibram outsole seem to be exactly what was needed. The gusseted tongue is 'gusseted' oddly IMO, but overall, it seems like a well thought-out shoe. We'll see if my toes have the same issue. Great review and feedback!

      @TDMiller  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Hey Chad! I've thought about it, but kinda decided against it. They're not very common here in Germany, and because their zero drop offer is so limited, I'm not really interested in spending the money. I've reached out to them without success, but perhaps that's a good thing. I try to get as much wear in my shoe rotation as possible, so I can be brutally honest as I can, and adding more brands will make that harder 😅

    Altra’s King Mt soles are pretty good in mud and snow. I wish they would make a timp model with them.

  • @brennenf
    @brennenf Před 2 měsíci +1

    The large heel pull on the Timp 4 was the all-time best. Easy to not tie my laces and just pull the shoe on. Every over model of Timp (2, 3 and now 5) has an inferior heel pull. I was disappointed to see this regression in the new model. Also, I'm not a fan of the colorways yet. For Timp 4s, they kept adding a new one every 6 months or so. I hope that happens again here.

    The best Vibram sole for mud would probably be the Peak Distict, which was designed pretty much for fell running here in the uk

    Hi, I am just about to try Altra . Regarding your request about mud shoes , I would urge you to try the Inov8 Mud-Talon speed . Cracking of a setup , zero drop, roomy toe box, very good grip .
    Admittedly, on the harder sole support, but a must-have in your collection.

      Inov8 do an excellent zero drop shoe, the trailfly 270, but they’re similar to the Lone Peak in intention so not a mud shoe. They did more zero drop and “barefoot” shoes a few years ago but not any more

      Good question. I feel the MB has a more aggressive rocker geometry, which I like, however I prefer the Vibram Megagrip outsole of the Timp 5 over the Vibram Litebase outsole of the MB. I'd take MB out for race day and the Timp for long training runs.

    I have about 150KM on my Timp 5 and the grips are already showing wear and breakdown. Disappointing for $200 CDN footwear. Going to return to Xero Shoes which in the past have lasted me years not a few months.

  • @reinistraidas
    @reinistraidas Před měsícem

    Noticed the same with Timp 5's as well as the Via Olympus. I am already sizing a full size up and my toes still feel under pressure after walking. Why is this? Like you, the Lone Peaks do not have this issue.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  Před měsícem

      I can only imagine it has something to do with the stiffness and rocker geometry lone peak is fairly flexible and barely any rocker due to its low profile.

    How protective is it underfoot against rocks, since it doesn't have a rock plate? I find the Lone Peak to allow rocks to poke through too much for my liking.

    i just got mine ... will be sending them
    back, sadly! i was hoping they will tick
    all the boxes! they feel
    so stiff, my underfoot still hurts after wearing them
    for few mins! also the tongue felt weird, was rubbing too much.
    I love love loan peak 7 ! they tick all the boxes apart from: very slippery on the mud! i live in the south of england and recent runs been a nightmare! saying that i done 50 km race on the north downs two weeks ago and they were fine.
    i will be wearing them for my 50 miler in April!
    I am
    a massive fan of Altras therefore I want to invest in another pair of trail shoes: i am not having any luck! I thought Timp will be perfect something between Olympus and mont blanc ...
    I have not try Olympus but from I've red they will be way to cushion for my liking!
    how about Mont Blanc? could they be the one??
    I am
    heading to Chamonix in July so would love to perhaps have slightly more 🗻friendly shoes than loan peak 7!
    if anyone have any ideas pls share :)

    HI TD thx for your review but sorry but I disagree as the T5 doesn't have those drainage holes in the midsole it mush contribute to the T5 being firmer as those holes in the T4 are both towards the outsole and the side of the midsole. Will be more interesting to see how the T5 compare to the new Olympus 6 and if it will still have that exposed midsole that everyone has complained about, if not the only difference could be the stack hight.
