Shanghai Cooperation Organisation falls ‘far short of real alliance’, says expert

  • On Wednesday (Jul 3), Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed their unity and commitment to deepening ties while at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). It is a Beijing-led regional bloc that covers Central Asia, India and Iran and is designed as a counterweight to US influence in international affairs. Aurel Braun, Professor of International Relations at the University of Toronto, tells CNA’s Asia First that he finds it difficult to see how the SCO could become a successful collective defence organisation, as there are “just far too many differences among the members”.

(Why are Chinese products and brands so popular in Kazakhstan?)
Why are Chinese products and brands so popular in Kazakhstan? CGTN's Suo Yiqun interviewed many tourists and locals in Astana, trying to find some answers. Many people said that the diversity and affordability of Chinese products make them attractive. Over the past few days, she frequently came across many Chinese brands and products in the city, underscoring their popularity in Kazakhstan. She noticed that many people in Kazakhstan have learned to use Chinese apps for online shopping. So what kind of products do Kazakh residents purchase through Chinese online stores? Watch the video to find out.

India is definetely the real duck among odd ducks, but I can think of at least two reasons why they are there (hypothesis, not facts, note)
    a) Maybe the country expects both China and Russia to have a calming effect on a potentially "over-enthousiastic" nuclear armed Pakistan
    b) Given the structure of the Indian Air Force to name but this, the country has to make a good will gesture towards Russia to keep getting spare parts etc. ?
Whether India with its caste system really is a democracy is debateable, but well, the country is of course without doubt by far the most democratic of the SCO. And if a carpenter can't become the next Indian PM, I guess something similar will apply to the US too, given what presidential campaigns cost, given the hidden or very open effect of lobby groups etc. But well: there are more than 1 candidates, more than 1 party etc,...
