I was 17 in March 1983. A friend and I were huge Randy Rhoads fans and we decided to up and head out from our home in Boston to go to LA on the first anniversary of Randy's death. I had learned about Musonia from a Guitar Player story. We got to LA, bought a street map and a bus schedule and headed toward North Hollywood on the day before the anniversary. We must have walked a mile plus and then we were standing in front of Musonia. We stepped inside and saw Mrs. Rhoads giving a piano lesson. She walked over to us and asked what we wanted. We were tongue-tied. We also had no idea whether she was ok with fans coming to her place of business. After a few seconds of silence, she asked if we were fans of Randy. We said yes. She said she had to finish the lesson, but would be happy to talk with us later. After she was done with the lesson, she gave us a tour of Musonia and spent nearly an hour with us. She was genuinely appreciative that we traveled across the country. She wrote down the cemetery where he was along with her home address and phone number on Musonia stationery.I still have it. Next day, we take a long bus ride to San Bernadino and Mrs. Rhoads introduced us to her family, Randy's girlfriend Jody and some of his friends. She also arranged for a couple of other fans to give us a ride back to LA. We saw the reformed QR at the Roxy that night. I would call her occasionally and send flowers. She was always a sweet lady who never seemed to feel bothered by fans. Just a wonderful lady. I've met his family a few times since on the anniversary and Kelle and Kathy always treat Randy's fans so well. They really are a special family. Such love and devotion to their Mom and to Randy's legacy. Bless all of them.
Great story. Hey, do you happen to remember the home address Mrs. Rhoads gave you? I live in Burbank near where I think Randy grew up but I'm not sure. I walk by the house every day while walking my dog. Is it on Amherst Drive?

I spoke to Mrs. Rhoads on the phone around "81/'82 to say how important Randy's music was to me. She was the sweetest kindest person you could ever speak with. I'm sure Randy is making some beautiful music in heaven.
So sad that Randy died before he got to really see the level of influence he had on guitar players and the music scene in general. Randy and EVH literally changed the way people played the instrument. I never saw a rivalry or any need to compare the two, they were just two innovators that fortunately for us existed at the same time. Sadly we lost them both now, but Randy died way too soon. I can't even imagine the music he would have created on his own. 😥
Man, Randy sounds like such a sweet guy. I mean, he obviously adored his mom and looked for her approval. God bless this woman. It must've been crushing getting the news the day Randy died. The world will never know how much was lost that fateful day.
The death of Randy Rhoаds is a very huge and terrible tragedy. I can’t imagine the horror that could have gripped Randy Rhoаds when all this happened, when he understood that it was a disaster and the plane would collide with the ground. This is complete horror. He just wanted to fly (like driving a car) and take photographs. And here it is......... Terrible. Very terrible. He didn’t want to fly on this damn plane (he was generally afraid of flying on planes). I am sure that Randy only boarded this damn plane for the sake of his mother, only to take photographs from above, because he wanted to please his mother with these photographs. I always wonder why you Randy got on that damn plane. Very sad. Randy Rhoаds is always in our hearts ❤ . tears on eyes 😢 .
My first concert was Ozzy on 3/18/82 here in in Knoxville TN I remember it like it was yesterday Watching Randy play live was like a Magical Experience HE WAS UNBELIEVABLE i never will forget it. People forget how AMAZING OF A GUITARISTS HE WAS HE WAS AND IS ONE THE BEST EVER

I totally forgot i'd called Musonia to tell her how much Randy meant to me until reading this. That was in the late 80's. Thank you so much for reminding me. She was very sweet and kind.
I play guitar and one of the first songs that I wanted to learn someday. Well..........still learning Oh,.......the first Barre of "Dee", (LOL) Randy's Classical piece off of BLIZZARD OF OZ. I don't even know how to approach it, for one. But I do remember that when I saw on tablature paper where that harmonic Randy does in the earlier part of Dee, and I played it, I remember being dumbfounded and looking at my hand that I did the harmonic with. LMAO, because it was mind blowing to hear that simple harmonic, because it was from my fingers. Thanks Randy, now maybe I can finally get to learning the H.A.R.D. part of that piece of music. Lol
It's heartbreaking hearing how his mother still talks about him like he was still her little boy Randy. She was so proud and you can tell she adored him. He was lucky to have had such a wonderful family behind him. That would make perfect sense how he seen himself as an artist who needed to improve all the time and not some drugged up rock star. RIP Randy.

My dad don't want me helping him with mum in the wheelchair, he is too proud and my mother don't want me seeing her without the bib on her butt, i'm her son. And when my dad needs to go do the shopping etc my aunt is there. They never call me and when i call they never want to talk to me but a couple minutes and that's it. Again my dad is too proud
@@m42037 because it sounds like, despite things, you are still making a effort to stay involved. And I can understand that. My father was a proud man too. Eventually, it got to the point where he had no choice but to let me help him. When that happened. He finally allowed me to help him. Which was a good thing for both of us. Even though your parents are too proud to let you help them. At least you are involved enough to know everything going on with them, you stated above. So, it sounds like you're doing everything you can, as a son. I applaud that. And I understand it.
@@DetroitWrecker666 Idk if i go that far. I don't want to go into detail and know people don't want to hear it but sometimes i won't talk to them for over a week maybe 10 days. Really mum had a stroke 4 years ago and she's not the same. I call and 5 minutes tops she don't want to talk and gives phone to dad. Sometimes i feel like they don't want to be bothered with me. Dad's like " ya son what's up how are ya? He's got a handful and still drinks his beers lol. My aunt tells me to go visit more that you don't know how long she's gonna live. She's 75 and don't eat much and gwts sick and you know the rest, RA also. I miss my old mum!!!
Thank you for posting this video, as of right now I can only get to a minute of the video because it was so emotional for me, knowing that Randy wanted to go get his master's degree in classical music and then seeing his music lessons started at 7, and he never got to pursue his dream. I think seeing the the Rockstar lifestyle in regards to the actual music was so different from what Randy expected. He looked at it as an opportunity to make great music and then found out what came with it was of course the partying to excess lifestyle that he really did not want to embrace he just wanted to make great music so sad that he never was able to get his degree and he was taken from us too fast. He was just getting started, and I believe he would have been the only one that could give Eddie Van Halen a run for his money
I'm not so sure Randy was turned off so much by the "Rock star" lifestyle, as he was turned off by Ozzy. Keep in mind Randy was in bands long before Ozzy and loved it. I recommend anyone who takes interest in Randy Rhoads read Bob Daisley's book "For Facts Sake" It is Bob's account of what went on during that time, straight from his personal Diaries. The band (Randy, etc..) being contractually obligated to be at the next show, had to find their own ride to the next show. Only to get there having Ozzy claim he didn't remember anything and wondered where everyone was at. All the fun, good times, partying and what not. When you're on the road as a Musician, just as any other profession, you are expected to be professional. That never seemed to apply to Ozzy. Yet, his organization would sue ANYONE at the drop of a hat if they didn't play by the rules. And even when they DID play by the rules..... As much as I love Oz. I have ZERO respect for the way he and Sharon have treated people over the years. They are continuing involved in lawsuits till this day where, they owe people money or credit or publishing or any number of other things they have screwed people out of over the years. It's honestly pathetic.
I do not disagree with that. But I believe a bigger part of that decision was probably based on watching Sharon Osbourne fire the most important contributors to the records "Blizzard of Oz" and "Diary of a Madman" Not to mention how everything else changed after the recording of those albums. Bob Daisley talks of how hard he and Randy fought to keep the name of the band "Blizzard of Oz" it was NEVER supposed to be "Ozzy Osbourne" it was supposed to be a band called "Blizzard of Oz" and Randy, Bob, and Lee even agreed they could put on the Album cover something like "......featuring the vocals of Ozzy Osbourne....." Or whatever. In the end. People were used and tossed out with the trash. And I'm sure there was a part of Randy that wondered if or when he would be next. Sharon Osbourne and the Osbourne machine have used and abused and thrown into the trash, SO MANY great artist not to mention people, over the years. The truth is honestly sickening.
@@DetroitWrecker666 completely agree! Not to mention the number they played on Jake E. Lee about not getting paid for the first album (bark at the moon) he recorded, only for Ultimate Sin. I recall Ozzy told him something along the lines of “that’s how the industry works, you should’ve asked for payment before recording” along with some other profanities. Zakk Wylde probably knows this too so he went on his own as well. Sharon did screw up the band, and is quite ruthless with the actual people that make Ozzy’s music. Yet without her, Ozzy wouldn’t be as rich as he is today. At this point Ozzy Osbourne is a firm, a franchise, but it is not a band anymore. Skip to 2020, Gus G is a great guitar player but we’ll see how much he lasts with Ozzy.

@@jomesias I didn’t know that about Ozzy, and I’m kinda bummed now that I do. I knew Sharon had taken after her father, but I always held out hope that Ozzy was different - just dominated and controlled by her, and too docile, inebriated or out of his tree to stand up to her. And after getting screwed over by both Sabbath and Warner/Don Arden, I thought he might have made a point not to do the same thing. I do know that Sharon and Ozzy were deeply in debt in the early 80’s, so maybe that played a part. Record companies were so horrible - they were basically just banks, lending money and resources. However, instead of paying back the loan with interest, these banks would still own your house at the end and would collect the $$ for renting it out, plus force you to build more houses under the same terms.

I don't believe Randy wanted to get his Degree in Classical Guitar as a means of becoming a "Classical Guitarist" I think he was simply eager to learn and try to perfect his trade as a Musician. He truly was dedicated to his Trade. However, I also believe he created a "urgency" to go back to School, because he wanted to get away from Ozzy. Ozzy Osbourne was everything BUT professional, regarding his trade as a Vocalist. You have to put yourself in Randy's shoes..... How would you like working with a guy who is constantly drunk and abusing drugs......decides to fire the entire band in the middle of the night, and throws them off the Bus. But you are contractually obligated to play the next show... So, you and the rest of the Band members have to find a ride to the next Gig, and when you get there, Ozzy claims he doesn't even remember it happening! The above is just one TRUE example of what went on while touring with Ozzy Osbourne. As much as I would like to tell you guys all of the stories, I won't. Because it is all in Bob Daisley's book "For Facts Sake" and Bob doesn't deserve to have someone like me tell all the stories. It is a FANTASTIC book, and I highly recommend it. God Bless
Randy's mother was a guiding light and gave us this Mozart of the guitar world. Randy is my favorite guitarist of all time hands down. When Blizzard came out in 1980 I was 18 and thought no one could outdo Eddie and 💥 here comes Randy, the most incredible player of the time and he had the extreme discipline and patience to become the legend he is. At 58 I still crank those to epic CD's and Over The Mountain is still today my all time favorite Ozzy, Rhoads metal masterpiece. ✝️ RIP 🎸RR Gentle Soul, Guitar Giant
I have audio of Randy talking about having tuning issues with the polka dot V "All the time" It was a basic Fender scale build with a Vibrato. Of course people today talk about tuning issues with Fender guitars when they use the whammy. Abstract Guitars was the builder. They were not known back then or even today for building world class guitars. They build some very interesting looking guitars. But I'm not sure if they ever mastered functionality. Your friend was maybe the first person to tech the off set V known as the Concord guitar that Grover Jackson designed for Randy. Would have been shortly after he bought out Charvel. Also have audio of Randy talking about it being a Charvel Guitar but, it said Jackson on the head stock "...everyone asks what's a Jackson?" Of course your friend would also have teched Randy's cream Les Paul Custom. It would be interesting to do an interview with him. I appreciate the comment.
@@DetroitWrecker666 it would have been great to do one with him, unfortunately he passed away last year , his name was Pete Restey , he was Tony Iomnis tech for 30 years. Pete took me to LA a few years ago to visit some people, connected, it was really far out. Petes name is in the song, Trashed with Ian Gillan singing. "pete and the green". there is a few videos on my page of Pete talking about it. Pete spent days on end telling me of working with so many incredible artist. RR included. He was always Blackmores tech as well. Pete worked for Manowar for many years too and was in the process of writing a book that will probably never be finished. I grew up cutting my teeth on RR. I was honored to have Pete as a friend and mentor.

I'm actually getting ready to record some Ozzy covers from that era with my brother. We haven't recorded together is over 20 years. So, I'm looking forward to that. I'm actually hoping it turns into us writing together again. He and I were both in bands all our lives. But we only worked together for a short time over 20 years ago. You can really see how the Rhoads family was intelligent and down to earth. You see Ozzy couldn't understand that fulfillment Randy had. It came from his Delores. We should all thank her for her hard work of a proper job raising Randy and his siblings as a single mother. She's epic
I've been a fan of classical guitar since back then, and I knew about his desire to switch to classical guitar at the time. This is why for me, I've always considered his early death to be the most tragic in rock history-we never got to see him tear up the classical guitar world. In an interview, he said that at each tour stop he would seek out a local classical guitar teacher to learn more, but he said he usually ended up teaching the teacher something new!

When I think about the electric guitar as the musical instrument in general and for it to be exercised at peak ability, I think of Randy. If I had to select one individual to successfully reach such an almost impossible achievement from all the people in the world, it would be Randall William Rhoads without question. I believe that if he was still alive, he would be the most complete guitar player known today by far, of an unsurpassable level. The instrument itself lost it's only completely able and worthy operator from that day, it's one of the most tragic occurrences that I've ever known but I do feel that he's legacy lives on, just in a higher existence now. Long live Randy Rhoads. NA1974🇬🇧.

This was a very interesting video. When my brother was practicing electric guitar he mentioned Randy Rhodes as being one of the best in the world, and I think he may have been right.
RR was underrated compared to Eddie Van Halen! I remember back in the early 80s i'm short of 55 years old. 40% of people would say how great Randy was but the other 60% was all EDDIE! God rest his soul now but lets get real Randy was better than any heavy rock/metal guitar player back then! I agree 100%.. I saw Randy in Detroit at the Masonic Temple. I was blown away like the Memorex man sitting in the chair ad. I was blown away. It seems to me. If you like Ozzys first two albums better then Van Halen first two albums. You are a Randy guy. If not you like van Halen. I liked Randys picking attack fluidness and structure better.

When I heard Tribute album I was blown away. The greatest album ever. It's missing lots of tracks from Diary, but has a few Sabbath songs. Just amazing stuff. 🎸
@@djay6651 Diary of a madman was recorded 4 months into Blizzard of Ozz. However, Tribute was released in 1987. They could have added more tracks from Diary. Only Believer is on there.

Plus most of his music with Ozzy is still in the same Sabbath style, dark, gothic, and heavy. Ozzy is basically Black Sabbath. Same style. Same approach. Just better solos and improvised.

Hearing all of this makes me think of the heartbreak that these wonderful people have had to endure in losing their brother and son. And they’re so courageous, hearing them remember Randy. People of great Faith, no doubt. What a waste, to be chewed up by this Rock Star machine. He would have studied classical guitar, gotten his master’s degree and probably been a venerated teacher and performer in his own right. He could have had his nice little life, or maybe a bit bigger life through his talent!...but he would have taught at his Mom’s school or maybe started his own...he would have had an otherwise normal and fulfilling life. But he got snatched up by this bullshit and it killed him...and I know the Rock scene to a degree having played in well-known local bands for many years. It’s essentially where all the outcasts and rejects go because EVERY ONE is accepted. And this idiot bus driver/pilot (where’d he get his license?...K-Mart?) is a prime example, although on a higher level. He just had to show off, and look what happened. I’ve been studying to be a certified drone operator, and the FAA study guide teaches a lot of the same stuff you need to get a real pilot’s license. The safety information and how to deal with emergencies has been updated in very recent years so this idiot would never have seen it back in those days. It says the NUMBER ONE most dangerous threat to any flight is a pilot who feels he has something to prove or who wants to show off. The most dangerous words that can ever be spoken by a pilot - and this is right out of the study guide: “Hey! Watch this!” Fucking asshole.
What make Randy a legend is he was a man who became a god, but would rather be a simple man. Discard all that he could gain in fame just to do what he loved most. Some people would sell their soul for that luxury even if it meant not doing what they loved.

Mama Rhoads Thank you for Randy may he rest in peace 12/6/56 - 3/18/82. Last year I was in the hospital for heart/kidney failure and we was not sure if I was gonna come out of the hospital on my feet or in a box. The hospital doctor asked me while I was in there Scotty if your heart does stop do you want us to do chest compressions CPR any of that? I firmly said NO cuz I'm finally gonna get to go to rock n roll heaven and jam with Randy Rhoads Eddie Van Halen SRV, Hendrix. DO NOT under ANY circumstances take that from me. If my heart stops and I come back I'm coming back very pissed off.
Such a great insight on his life before joining Ozzy...I totally understand his desire to study classical guitar...I went the other direction early on in my life it was classical piano study and then became very interested in The progressive rock..
I would've loved to hear a CD of Randy interpreting works by Paganini, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. If only he had lived, that might've become a reality. We will never know what could've been. God rest his soul.

He knows that part of his appeal is coming off as being like one of the kids who would buy his records or tickets to his concerts. He's lived a life of excess , but he's done what he wanted to do. I always felt if Rhoads was still around, we would have had the Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen tour with Mr. Rhoads. If he kept at Rock music after his degree, he was that important and still that important. I learned more from the few articles and interviews with him, than most teachers can explain intro to theory in a semester's time.
It's VERY hard to say. Although, I cannot imagine the Ozzy records would be the last we heard from him in heavy metal. The fans just loved him way too much. I do often think about what the next records would be like. "Diary..." For SURE had a classical guitar theme in MANY of the songs. When you listen to the song "Diary.." Or "Revelation Mother Earth" these songs were no doubt influenced by classical guitar melodies. Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley, and Max Norman probably would have wrote several more albums together, is my guess. And I say that in part because, Bob Daisley went on to write with Jake E Lee. Not taking anything away from Jake. But I'm SURE these next Albums would have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT sound, had Randy lived to see it and decided to go on with Oz.

What this video does not talk about is how Randy talked of going on to blend Classical works with heavy metal. Which, obviously, he was already starting to do on the two Ozzy albums. It's THAT sound that I will probably forever chase. If not for Randy, I would not have taken a interest in classical guitar, myself. I would probably have just chugged away on metal riffs my entire life. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's all about how you want to challenge yourself, musically.

So sad that Randy died before he got to really see the level of influence he had on guitar players and the music scene in general. Randy and EVH literally changed the way people played the instrument. I never saw a rivalry or any need to compare the two, they were just two innovators that fortunately for us existed at the same time. Sadly we lost them both now, but Randy died way too soon. I can't even imagine the music he would have created on his own. 😥

I phoned her in the late 80's because I was thinking about going to music college and I had transcribed "Dee" for classical piano. She was super nice.
I totally forgot i'd called Musonia to tell her how much Randy meant to me until reading this. That was in the late 80's. Thank you so much for reminding me. She was very sweet and kind.

I play guitar and one of the first songs that I wanted to learn someday. Well..........still learning Oh,.......the first Barre of "Dee", (LOL) Randy's Classical piece off of BLIZZARD OF OZ. I don't even know how to approach it, for one. But I do remember that when I saw on tablature paper where that harmonic Randy does in the earlier part of Dee, and I played it, I remember being dumbfounded and looking at my hand that I did the harmonic with. LMAO, because it was mind blowing to hear that simple harmonic, because it was from my fingers. Thanks Randy, now maybe I can finally get to learning the H.A.R.D. part of that piece of music. Lol
It's heartbreaking hearing how his mother still talks about him like he was still her little boy Randy. She was so proud and you can tell she adored him.
He was lucky to have had such a wonderful family behind him.
That would make perfect sense how he seen himself as an artist who needed to improve all the time and not some drugged up rock star.

Really mum had a stroke 4 years ago and she's not the same. I call and 5 minutes tops she don't want to talk and gives phone to dad. Sometimes i feel like they don't want to be bothered with me. Dad's like " ya son what's up how are ya? He's got a handful and still drinks his beers lol. My aunt tells me to go visit more that you don't know how long she's gonna live. She's 75 and don't eat much and gwts sick and you know the rest, RA also. I miss my old mum!!!

Thank you for posting this video, as of right now I can only get to a minute of the video because it was so emotional for me, knowing that Randy wanted to go get his master's degree in classical music and then seeing his music lessons started at 7, and he never got to pursue his dream. I think seeing the the Rockstar lifestyle in regards to the actual music was so different from what Randy expected. He looked at it as an opportunity to make great music and then found out what came with it was of course the partying to excess lifestyle that he really did not want to embrace he just wanted to make great music so sad that he never was able to get his degree and he was taken from us too fast. He was just getting started, and I believe he would have been the only one that could give Eddie Van Halen a run for his money
I'm not so sure Randy was turned off so much by the "Rock star" lifestyle, as he was turned off by Ozzy.
Keep in mind Randy was in bands long before Ozzy and loved it.
I recommend anyone who takes interest in Randy Rhoads read Bob Daisley's book "For Facts Sake"
It is Bob's account of what went on during that time, straight from his personal Diaries.

The band (Randy, etc..) being contractually obligated to be at the next show, had to find their own ride to the next show. Only to get there having Ozzy claim he didn't remember anything and wondered where everyone was at.
All the fun, good times, partying and what not. When you're on the road as a Musician, just as any other profession, you are expected to be professional. That never seemed to apply to Ozzy. Yet, his organization would sue ANYONE at the drop of a hat if they didn't play by the rules. And even when they DID play by the rules..... As much as I love Oz. I have ZERO respect for the way he and Sharon have treated people over the years. They are continuing involved in lawsuits till this day where, they owe people money or credit or publishing or any number of other things they have screwed people out of over the years. It's honestly pathetic.
I think Randy was disillusioned by the whole "rock star" thing once he started touring with Ozzy... he saw it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be.
I do not disagree with that. But I believe a bigger part of that decision was probably based on watching Sharon Osbourne fire the most important contributors to the records "Blizzard of Oz" and "Diary of a Madman" Not to mention how everything else changed after the recording of those albums. Bob Daisley talks of how hard he and Randy fought to keep the name of the band "Blizzard of Oz" it was NEVER supposed to be "Ozzy Osbourne" it was supposed to be a band called "Blizzard of Oz" and Randy, Bob, and Lee even agreed they could put on the Album cover something like "......featuring the vocals of Ozzy Osbourne....." Or whatever.
In the end. People were used and tossed out with the trash. And I'm sure there was a part of Randy that wondered if or when he would be next.
Sharon Osbourne and the Osbourne machine have used and abused and thrown into the trash, SO MANY great artist not to mention people, over the years. The truth is honestly sickening.
@@DetroitWrecker666 completely agree! Not to mention the number they played on Jake E. Lee about not getting paid for the first album (bark at the moon) he recorded, only for Ultimate Sin. I recall Ozzy told him something along the lines of “that’s how the industry works, you should’ve asked for payment before recording” along with some other profanities. Zakk Wylde probably knows this too so he went on his own as well.
Sharon did screw up the band, and is quite ruthless with the actual people that make Ozzy’s music. Yet without her, Ozzy wouldn’t be as rich as he is today. At this point Ozzy Osbourne is a firm, a franchise, but it is not a band anymore. Skip to 2020, Gus G is a great guitar player but we’ll see how much he lasts with Ozzy.

@@jomesias I didn’t know that about Ozzy, and I’m kinda bummed now that I do. I knew Sharon had taken after her father, but I always held out hope that Ozzy was different - just dominated and controlled by her, and too docile, inebriated or out of his tree to stand up to her. And after getting screwed over by both Sabbath and Warner/Don Arden, I thought he might have made a point not to do the same thing. I do know that Sharon and Ozzy were deeply in debt in the early 80’s, so maybe that played a part. Record companies were so horrible - they were basically just banks, lending money and resources. However, instead of paying back the loan with interest, these banks would still own your house at the end and would collect the $$ for renting it out, plus force you to build more houses under the same terms.

I don't believe Randy wanted to get his Degree in Classical Guitar as a means of becoming a "Classical Guitarist"
I think he was simply eager to learn and try to perfect his trade as a Musician. He truly was dedicated to his Trade. However, I also believe he created a "urgency" to go back to School, because he wanted to get away from Ozzy. Ozzy Osbourne was everything BUT professional, regarding his trade as a Vocalist.
You have to put yourself in Randy's shoes..... How would you like working with a guy who is constantly drunk and abusing drugs......decides to fire the entire band in the middle of the night, and throws them off the Bus.
But you are contractually obligated to play the next show... So, you and the rest of the Band members have to find a ride to the next Gig, and when you get there, Ozzy claims he doesn't even remember it happening!
The above is just one TRUE example of what went on while touring with Ozzy Osbourne.
As much as I would like to tell you guys all of the stories, I won't. Because it is all in Bob Daisley's book "For Facts Sake" and Bob doesn't deserve to have someone like me tell all the stories.

Randy's mother was a guiding light and gave us this Mozart of the guitar world. Randy is my favorite guitarist of all time hands down. When Blizzard came out in 1980 I was 18 and thought no one could outdo Eddie and 💥 here comes Randy, the most incredible player of the time and he had the extreme discipline and patience to become the legend he is. At 58 I still crank those to epic CD's and Over The Mountain is still today my all time favorite Ozzy, Rhoads metal masterpiece. ✝️ RIP 🎸RR Gentle Soul, Guitar Giant
a friend of mine was Randy's tech with Ozzy. Randy was a huge influence to so many. RR forever!
I have audio of Randy talking about having tuning issues with the polka dot V "All the time" It was a basic Fender scale build with a Vibrato. Of course people today talk about tuning issues with Fender guitars when they use the whammy. Abstract Guitars was the builder. They were not known back then or even today for building world class guitars. They build some very interesting looking guitars. But I'm not sure if they ever mastered functionality.
Your friend was maybe the first person to tech the off set V known as the Concord guitar that Grover Jackson designed for Randy. Would have been shortly after he bought out Charvel. Also have audio of Randy talking about it being a Charvel Guitar but, it said Jackson on the head stock "...everyone asks what's a Jackson?"
Of course your friend would also have teched Randy's cream Les Paul Custom.
It would be interesting to do an interview with him.

@@DetroitWrecker666 it would have been great to do one with him, unfortunately he passed away last year , his name was Pete Restey , he was Tony Iomnis tech for 30 years. Pete took me to LA a few years ago to visit some people, connected, it was really far out. Petes name is in the song, Trashed with Ian Gillan singing. "pete and the green". there is a few videos on my page of Pete talking about it. Pete spent days on end telling me of working with so many incredible artist. RR included. He was always Blackmores tech as well. Pete worked for Manowar for many years too and was in the process of writing a book that will probably never be finished. I grew up cutting my teeth on RR. I was honored to have Pete as a friend and mentor.

I'm actually getting ready to record some Ozzy covers from that era with my brother. We haven't recorded together is over 20 years. So, I'm looking forward to that. I'm actually hoping it turns into us writing together again. He and I were both in bands all our lives. But we only worked together for a short time over 20 years ago. It will either work really well. Or we'll kill each other. LOL!

I've been a fan of classical guitar since back then, and I knew about his desire to switch to classical guitar at the time. This is why for me, I've always considered his early death to be the most tragic in rock history-we never got to see him tear up the classical guitar world. In an interview, he said that at each tour stop he would seek out a local classical guitar teacher to learn more, but he said he usually ended up teaching the teacher something new!
Kathy is almost a spitting image of Randy!! Randy's mother is such a wonderful, and hard working single mom!!!

When I think about the electric guitar as the musical instrument in general and for it to be exercised at peak ability, I think of Randy. If I had to select one individual to successfully reach such an almost impossible achievement from all the people in the world, it would be Randall William Rhoads without question. I believe that if he was still alive, he would be the most complete guitar player known today by far, of an unsurpassable level. The instrument itself lost it's only completely able and worthy operator from that day, it's one of the most tragic occurrences that I've ever known but I do feel that he's legacy lives on, just in a higher existence now. Long live Randy Rhoads. NA1974🇬🇧.

This was a very interesting video. When my brother was practicing electric guitar he mentioned Randy Rhodes as being one of the best in the world, and I think he may have been right.
RR was underrated compared to Eddie Van Halen! I remember back in the early 80s i'm short of 55 years old. 40% of people would say how great Randy was but the other 60% was all EDDIE! God rest his soul now but lets get real Randy was better than any heavy rock/metal guitar player back then! Hell today he's still better than most and he was 25 when he died because of that stupid pilot

I agree 100%.. I saw Randy in Detroit at the Masonic Temple. I was blown away like the Memorex man sitting in the chair ad. I was blown away. It seems to me. If you like Ozzys first two albums better then Van Halen first two albums. You are a Randy guy. If not you like van Halen. I liked Randys picking attack fluidness and structure better.

When I heard Tribute album I was blown away. The greatest album ever. It's missing lots of tracks from Diary, but has a few Sabbath songs. Just amazing stuff. 🎸
The Majority of "Tribute" was recorded 6 months before the release of "Diary". It would likely have been on the "Blizzard" tour.
@@djay6651 Diary of a madman was recorded 4 months into Blizzard of Ozz. However, Tribute was released in 1987. They could have added more tracks from Diary. Only Believer is on there.

Hearing all of this makes me think of the heartbreak that these wonderful people have had to endure in losing their brother and son. And they’re so courageous, hearing them remember Randy. People of great Faith, no doubt. What a waste, to be chewed up by this Rock Star machine. He would have studied classical guitar, gotten his master’s degree and probably been a venerated teacher and performer in his own right. He could have had his nice little life, or maybe a bit bigger life through his talent!...but he would have taught at his Mom’s school or maybe started his own...he would have had an otherwise normal and fulfilling life. But he got snatched up by this bullshit and it killed him...and I know the Rock scene to a degree having played in well-known local bands for many years. It’s essentially where all the outcasts and rejects go because EVERY ONE is accepted. And this idiot bus driver/pilot (where’d he get his license?...K-Mart?) is a prime example, although on a higher level. He just had to show off, and look what happened. I’ve been studying to be a certified drone operator, and the FAA study guide teaches a lot of the same stuff you need to get a real pilot’s license. The safety information and how to deal with emergencies has been updated in very recent years so this idiot would never have seen it back in those days. It says the NUMBER ONE most dangerous threat to any flight is a pilot who feels he has something to prove or who wants to show off. The most dangerous words that can ever be spoken by a pilot - and this is right out of the study guide: “Hey! Watch this!” Fucking asshole.

Last year I was in the hospital for heart/kidney failure and we was not sure if I was gonna come out of the hospital on my feet or in a box. The hospital doctor asked me while I was in there Scotty if your heart does stop do you want us to do chest compressions CPR any of that? I firmly said NO cuz I'm finally gonna get to go to rock n roll heaven and jam with Randy Rhoads Eddie Van Halen SRV, Hendrix. DO NOT under ANY circumstances take that from me. If my heart stops and I come back I'm coming back very pissed off.
Such a great insight on his life before joining Ozzy...I totally understand his desire to study classical guitar...I went the other direction early on in my life it was classical piano study and then became very interested in The progressive rock..

I would've loved to hear a CD of Randy interpreting works by Paganini, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc. If only he had lived, that might've become a reality. We will never know what could've been. God rest his soul.

@@Whitevaliantwarrior if you think he is just some goofball who is oblivious to what's going on , he's doing his job. He's an entertainer. He knows that part of his appeal is coming off as being like one of the kids who would buy his records or tickets to his concerts. He's lived a life of excess , but he's done what he wanted to do. He's happy, his kids respect him ,his colleagues look up to him . That's success to me

i love the classical influence in randys playing i saw him 1979 with quiet riot, carlos cavaso was fantastic at that time with the band snow.

I always felt if Rhoads was still around, we would have had the Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen tour with Mr. Rhoads. If he kept at Rock music after his degree, he was that important and still that important. I learned more from the few articles and interviews with him, than most teachers can explain intro to theory in a semester's time.
It's VERY hard to say. Although, I cannot imagine the Ozzy records would be the last we heard from him in heavy metal. The fans just loved him way too much.
I do often think about what the next records would be like. "Diary..." For SURE had a classical guitar theme in MANY of the songs. When you listen to the song "Diary.." Or "Revelation Mother Earth" these songs were no doubt influenced by classical guitar melodies.
Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley, and Max Norman probably would have wrote several more albums together, is my guess.
And I say that in part because, Bob Daisley went on to write with Jake E Lee. Not taking anything away from Jake. But I'm SURE these next Albums would have a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT sound, had Randy lived to see it and decided to go on with Oz.
@@DetroitWrecker666 it is hard to say, but I do believe he would have just become astronomically brilliant, and yeah I would say his next works would have been completely different as well.
@@c.f.pedraza4057 I think next works would have been even more heavily influenced by Classical Guitar. What this video does not talk about is how Randy talked of going on to blend Classical works with heavy metal. Which, obviously, he was already starting to do on the two Ozzy albums.
It's THAT sound that I will probably forever chase. If not for Randy, I would not have taken a interest in classical guitar, myself. I would probably have just chugged away on metal riffs my entire life. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's all about how you want to challenge yourself, musically.

I had read decades ago that Randy on tour didn't do the normal glam rocker thing like drugs and sex. He instead got on his bicycle and went around the area taking pictures.
