I loved how the original trilogy portrayed people like Yoda and the Emperor, compared to how the prequels changed things. In these movies, you get a sense that these guys are so powerful that they don't have the need to even use basic Force powers or lightsabers anymore. They have wisdom and foresight, the Force is granting them a kind of clairvoyance that goes beyond what the normal person or even less powerful Force user can attain. The Emperor's power is in his god-like foresight and the control he has over the Empire, not only can he see things that are going to happen but he has the power to move the pieces around like he's simply playing chess. It makes him a lot scarier than a guy who can just flip around and swing a lightsaber. I love how this movie has Luke coming in with all this swag and you realize pretty quickly that the Emperor is a million steps ahead of him, so much so that Luke's "powers" don't even mean anything to him. The Emperor is scoffing and gloating over Luke's inferior understanding of everything. It's a phenomenal scene.

And especially as a direct result of Palpatine's overconfidence? I think you're overinterpreting the movie. Palpatine is probably just treating it as an insult and responding in kind. And as for Vader turning on him, if that's the single data point in favor then its not very convincing. He could have simply been wrong about Vader and that's it.

They set up the Emperor as such a strong character. He reminded me of the grim reaper, like your looking at death and didn’t want to mess with him with his yellow eyes staring you back. It really made Vader look like a pawn and a pathetic figure compared to what we saw in the Empire Strikes Back. Vader used his strength as fear. The emperor just needed to look at you. He was so powerful that it made him arrogant to the fact that Vader would sacrifice his life for his son.

I've heard various actors say how much fun it is to play villains. They can just cut loose. Ham it up, chew on the scenery, very few things are out of bounds. Playing the hero is much harder. Depending of the kind of hero, actors have to have a much tighter rein on their voice, gestures, facial expressions, movements, so they don't slip over to "Dudley DoRight." Hamill does a wonderful job. For most of these scenes, Luke is quiet, calm, compassionate -- as a Jedi should be. Then he cuts loose when Vader threatens Leia, and then throttles back when Luke sees he's turning. Mark doesn't overplay a single note. To move back and forth like that, It's the writing, direction, editing, but still mostly Hamill.

These aren't all of them, but all the scenes in the throne room with Luke, Vader, and The Emperor are the best in the entire saga BY FAR. They have the best dialogue and the stakes are so high. I love how evil and nonchalant The Emperor is. He doesn't consider Luke a threat. Vader, who was the "big bad" in the first two films, is now a mere sidekick in comparison to The Emperor in this film. I love the way Vader looks shocked whenever Luke talks back to The Emperor. I think he's legitimately scared for his son. The Emperor is my favorite character and Ian McDiarmid is a brilliant actor, especially considering he was a young man with a ton of makeup on to look old when this was filmed. Well, it's also the atmosphere they delivered in the room. I would imagine that sans music, that room would have been quieter than any other. You could probably hear a pin drop in that room. That's what made it the perfect conditions for Anakin to turn back to the light, because his mind was perfectly at peace in that moment, not a slave to the noise and raff of the republic and all that. The conditions when Anakin turned to the dark, think back to ep.3 in the chancellor's office, the window behind the soon to be emperor's desk was blown out, which meant that all the noises of Coruscant were let in to the office. You likely couldn't even hear yourself think. Anakin's thoughts were a slave to all the politics at play at that moment. Not on the death star. On the death star, it's up in space, and therefore, the conditions are naturally going to be a whole lot quieter.

Palpatine’s overconfidence may well be his weakness, but my own personal interpretation has rather been that his ultimate weakness (and strength) is that he has mastered the Dark Side to such a level and been so utterly consumed by it at this point that he has become blinded to the presence of genuine virtues- such as bravery, loyalty, chivalry, truth, patience, integrity, self-sacrifice, and being a good friend and determined son- and Luke embodies these virtues, so Palpatine (as well as being arrogant) on a deeper level simply cannot tell that he is talking to the real deal here and the young Jedi who will trigger the course of the events that leads to his undoing is stood in front of him, and he has at last been outmanoeuvred and conquered. This side effect of Palaptine’s pure evil, acquired through years of practicing the Dark Side, turns to be his fatal weakness.

The master manipulator and powerful Sith Lord of the dark side, Sheev Palpatine aka Darth Sidious.
Palpatine manipulated Anakin with lying promises that Anakin can save Padme by becoming a Sith and Anakin made the fatal mistake to believe him.
The fact he took off Luke's handcuffs with a flick of his finger shows how powerful he was with the dark side.
Luke saw first hand just how powerful Palpatine was.
Don't be deceived by his frail and deformed appearance. Using the dark side so much and for so long severely disfigured his appearance and turned his eyes yellow.
They are physical manifestations of deeply immersed dark side corruption and prolonged usage.
Palpatine never cared about him, he used Anakin/Vader as an errand boy to do his dirty work and then threw him away when Palpatine didn't find him useful anymore.
Palpatine sensed Luke's anger growing as was taunting Luke to give into his anger and strike.
Luke was trying hard not to give into Palpatine's goading, keep his anger under control and not allow Palpatine to manipulate and bait him.
Basically, Palpatine was dangling a carrot in front of Luke to get him.

Isn’t that basically what I just said? I 100% agree with you, but i also think it’s more than just palpatine, it’s the dark side itself that regained hope. The dark lord of the sith in the rule of two era has generations of knowledge passed on from master to apprentice for the last 1000 years. The amount of dark side energy that gets passed along has only gotten stronger as the time as gone on and the dark side of the force itself is concentrated on palpatine and the dark side needs another vessel to gain all the knowledge and strength that palpatine has so that it could continue to grow. Vader will never be able to reach the potential that palpatine is currently at and has become inferior to be the dark sides focal point. Luke’s mitochlorine count being so high is a vessel that could not only reach Palpatines strength, but grow even stronger over time. By this point in time palpatine is almost 90 years old and the dark side while it can extend ones life span, it also is running out of time for another worthy individual to be trained and have all that energy to passed along.

    • @jonathanruiz9062
      @jonathanruiz9062 Před 2 lety

@@satan899 Basically Palpatine didn’t want to do all the things he did in clone wars and empire era alone. He wanted someone to do all his dirty work for him to (being his slave basically) become the face of the sith. I think He followed the rule of two for a specific reason, not only wanted to make pain to his apprentices but also wanted to prevent any posible sith and Jedi wars like in the old republic cause he wanted to be the best of the best by being the absolute evil. He wanted to become the definition of the dark side.
adds another meaning. That Palpatine didn’t care if Anakin was destined to be stronger than him and also capable of killing him but also wanted to train Anakin to become the biggest threat in the galaxy before Anakin was doomed at mustafar by Obi Wan. This could be another way to pass his lifespan to Anakin by being trained by Sidius.

He didn’t truly dedicate himself to fully living forever until Vader’s defeat on mustafar. Vader being crippled changed how he viewed Vader as a whole. He was still to strong to just let die, but was now way to weak in order to be the sith he dreamed he’d be. He didn’t want Vader to overthrow him because he saw how unstable and emotional he is and who had no vision and wasn’t worthy of ever being a master. It’s almost as if he thought Vader was completely beneath him and wasn’t worth ever training or sharing the secrets of the sith let alone taking over an empire the sith have been working for 1000 years to create. Yea Sidious thought he’d achieve immortality by the time he expected Vader could overthrow him, but he did realize that one day Vader might kill him. Once Vader was defeated tho, he wasn’t going to ever give Vader a chance to overthrow him because he just out right wasn’t going to train him the way that he was planning on doing. Palpatine still wanted that fully powered ultimate sith that would be the total victory for the sith and Luke gives him another chance to have that prize. Him saying in front of Vader he looks forward to training him is a giant slap in the face to him because after his defeat, he never got trained formally and was told very little of the information Sidious would have willingly given to someone who was “worthy” to rule the empire which Vader who was not only to weak, but to emotional unstable and focused on his own defeats and condition would never be able to be handed over the mantle of dark lord.

They were former Jedi and he just used them as pawns for his own extremely selfish interests and ambitions. Maul was debatable, based on his background of being forced to survive, along with mostly tough love and abuse. Hence why I viewed Palpatine to be the laziest of Sith and focused more on politics and control.

I love the flamboyance with which he acts and delivers his lines, and he perfectly conveys the arrogance that comes from ruling without question for so long. The way he switches from confidently refuting Luke's claims about his own arrogance, to overconfidently showing his clairvoyance, to mockingly feeling sorry for the Rebellion is masterful and shows that the Emperor values emotion only as a tool to manipulate others. These couple of scenes are arguably the best part of the franchise.
This actors are giving an acting class, right here, right there.

I just realized. The reason Vader says 'it is pointless to resist my son' is because in that moment anger is building in Luke after the emperor was taunting him with his friends death. Luke must be telling himself to remain calm, Darth Vader sees this so he just tells Luke what he is doing is pointless. I kinda always thought Luke didn't start getting angry till the strike me down moment, but the emperor was pissing him off from the very start.

I love this because it shows how much Palpatine underestimates the little people in the galaxy. I don’t just mean that literally. The ordinary, apparently weak citizens of the galaxy are assumed to be easily breakable but the Ewoks prove the Emperor wrong.

Pay attention to how Vader says " HIS Lightsaber ". He did it in such a low vibrational demonic way that you can tell he didn't appreciate the emperor approaching his son, let alone the manner in which he spoke to him. 10/10

I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan so it's almost impossible for me to really imagine this scene from the perspective of someone watching for the first time. But I honestly love the setup of the Emperor.
This dreaded figure, the Emperor against whose forces the heroes have struggled for the entire time and when we finally do see him, he's an old man in a black cloak, something altogether different from the menacing, towering figure of Darth Vader.
He exudes an aura of quiet but absolute power, and when he casually uncuffs Luke's manacles using the Force, this is when you know him to be a threat of great magnitude.
