- In this crystal clear guitar lesson you’ll learn all about the harmonic major scale or Ionian b6 scale, that can be used for Rock, Pop, Jazz, Fusion and other styles. The scale sound sounds melancholic and major at the same time, resulting in a mysterious sounding scale.
In this guitar tutorial we look at the scale and arpeggios that are derived from harmonizing the harmonic major scale. We’ll see what chord progressions you can make with the beautiful but spicy chords. And we look at the modes of the scale and their applications, such as the Dorian b5, Phrygian b4, Melodic minor #4 or Lydian b3, Lydian augmented #2, Mixolydian b2 and Locrian bb7.

This channel is an absolute treasure trove!
Ditto
This one channel has taught me more in less time (without ads in between or fluff or any other nonsense) compared to hundreds of books, blogs and classes. Thank you sir and QJamTracks ❤😂😂😊
Hey Rob. You always post some of the finest content on CZcams. I really appreciate the effort you put into sharing your knowledge with us and, as you say, in a crystal clear way, and English isn't even your first language! My compliments! If anyone ever asks me about guitar theory, I always point them in the direction of your channel. Many thanks.
Thank you Stephen for your nice comment!
Yeah, really beautiful. Sure, there are a lot of Jazz voicing at hand but a lot of Chopin and Rachmaninoff as well! Great to hear this illuminated on guitar.
Best channel for gtr ive found on yt. Thx
You are a hero it's getting harder and harder to find these topics I hope there's one on the messian modes
Your Grandmother was right!!! Thank you for this Crystal Clear explanation!
Always happy to see a new upload! The information contained in these videos keeps me busy for a looong time. Hands down my favorite guitar teacher on CZcams
What an enjoyable video to watch not just for the content but the way you've presented it, so clear and at a good fast pace, well edited etc. Thank you.
Thank you!
Brilliant ! !
Fascinating, transparent and comprehensive. Presented in an engaging and encouraging style. I tremendously enjoy the guitar examples.
Very musical and generous, heartfelt thanks.
Thank you!
Man your videos are too too good!!! It's free content with the worth and excellence of paid content and your way to quickly show and explain the concepts are admirable, no wonder it's called "crystal clear"! Congratulations and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this kind of content! It is very much appreciated!! Keep on doing such a great work!!
Cheers from Brazil!!
Thank you!
Great production value! And amazing information. I don't quite understand all of it yet, but this was a lot of great information!
Thanks for all the great lessons! 😊
Thanks for showing the (theory, the structure, and the application), inspiring the creativity.
Great lesson! Thank you for doing this.
I finally learned how chords are created from scales thanks to this video. 👌🤓
Fantastic content and fantastic production. I love the example playing as well. Thank you and cheers!
Dense and beautiful, and with a Dutch accent. I'm jamming with a good friend who is a Nederlander and we are working on diatonic modes. I love your graphic showing how to think about modes. I shared with him. Thanks for dense and beautiful.
ionian b6 = makam shawq afza
dorian b5 = maqam nahawand murassah
phrygian b4 = maqam saba zamzam (that has to be minor and not dominant home chord or minor dyad to get the "correct" maqam saba zamzam sound though, or just powerchord )
mixolydian b2 = makam zanjaran.
on my channel i have some improvisation in maqam shawq afza, saba zamzam and makam zanjaran. In those I try to find a compromise between western harmony and arabic sound.
Regarding the lydian b3 mode, although I understand why you prefer calling it melodic minor sharp4, it technically should be regarded as lydian because lydian is always surrounded by some form of phrygian from below, and from above by mixolydian modes. Giving it other name than lydianb3 confuses the modes of harmonic Major vs harmonic minor and melodic minor.
great video, thanks.
You are doing great things.
Amazing break down!
Wow great lesson!!!!
this lesson feels cold in this winter 😃

Wonderful teacher!!
Mothers and grandothers are, ideed, always right! Beautiful tutorial!
:)
Thank you Master
Nice and genius...
Top quality content.
hey an awesome channel you have! I just want to suggest making guitar lessons into a playlist, didn`t find such
I love this chanel my favorite no doubt ❤❤❤
Thanks!
Mode 2 also works to my ears as a Dorian blues scale (perhaps more in that context in a fusion setting ) mode 6 also works not just as an Ab aug major scale but also as superimposed A minor scale without the root note A … mode 4 can also function as a superimposed Lydian blues scale … all of these are a little outside of the parent chord but work if you use that in lines as passing color
genius master guitar instructor🤘🤘 I've learned a lot from you.. My support always, Thanks👍
Thank you!
I would love to see the crystal clear Bebop Major video. Thanks for this lessons
Post Bop genre in general would be great :D
Nice lesson! This is a scale that I never had to pay much attention to ... the music I've had to play in the past didn't seem to have anything written as such. I think it's a beautiful scale!
spicy 🔥❤️✨
Excellent as always Rob. More bloopers too, please... 😄
Hahaha, I've got bloopers enough Tony :)
Awesome lesson, thanks for helping to uncover music :) I wonder who played this scale first in history...
Excellent interesting tutorial & wonderful scale & harmonization!!! It'd be great if you could make large format posters including all this information for many of the main scales and chords and modes for sale! We could then print and laminate them and put them on our or students walls.
I'm working on those posters :)
Lately I couldn't find the time, but they are coming :)
Do you think the new quality makes Rob's hair look more grey, or dealing with it made his hair actually more grey? 🤔
The latter is true hahaha.
@@QJamTracks I feel your pain 😂
Do you know famous songs that use these harmonics scales and arpeggios almost exclusively? Thanks
I don't think the harmonic major scale is used exclusively. You can hear it in Jazz and classical music. Also in these styles the scale used more for shorter segments.
the ever dreaded harmonic major scale, explained in layman's term. thank you :)
But some degrees have few tonic chords, minor and major
iii and III
iv and ivo
True :)
@@QJamTracks and this is paradox :)
phrygian is minor scale with Major tonic chord :>
harmonic Major phenomenon need deeper continuation ,like Twin Peaks :)
Scales are not what they seem
flat 6 walk with me!
George Harrison giving guitar lessons 😀😀
@7:19 you played Fm7 not FmM7
That’s ok because the fm is a triad, the minor major is an extension
Hey I think I'm first haha
Well it's the Mid eastern scale used in Israel. I came up on this. You can play this 2 not towards the nut
👍
Hi , what title in your store would this harmonic major info be included in ?
It's not in any book yet, but a dedicated e-book for this scale is coming up.
Neoploitan mjnor video please !
