  • NR's David Santaniello demonstrates how to chain together paddle strokes and sculling braces in the dynamic rock garden environment. This instructive slow motion video shows how David gets it done.

In the final low-high-scull sequence you advise us to watch David's head position during the scull. I am missing something - please let me know what it is. I see that his head is in a neutral position (sticking straight off of he body) and he starts looking skyward when he switches into the scull from the high brace. Should it be dropped towards the water more or is the rotation upwards what we are supposed to see? And I love seeing the smile as he recovered.

Hi Andy, thanks for watching. When I started the sculling brace, I dropped my head to the water surface so that I would be able to rotate the kayak around my upper body. If I had tried to keep my head above water, I would have ended up doing a crunch with my abs and would have pulled my left knee up and over towards the right side. That would have completely capsized me. By keeping my head low, I was able to engage my lower body by pushing hard with my left foot and driving my right knee upwards into the thigh brace. Ideally you would see my kayak roll mostly upright before my head came back up. Also, I am more successful sculling when I look up at the sky. It reminds me to keep my head down (I think of it as putting the back of my head in the water) and I have more control over my rotation from that position than if I am looking in the direction of the bow.

Good job bro! I often explain that braces come in three flavors; preventative, corrective and the recovery brace. This is a great example of the recovery, one of my favorite flavors,(this may say something about a need to work on the other flavors a bit more). Awesome explanation on the mechanics, it's much more subtle visually than the effort applied. I usually tell folks when a brace first starts to fail to throw their rear shoulder to the water,(balance brace/float position, then the head follows and this engages the water knee strongly to prevent the complete capsize), all while getting/keeping the paddle at or near the surface. One other thing worth the mention is that often times these braces happen fast, so many times the brace is accomplished while "reaching" for a position; while if it doesn't succeed quickly the reach toward the float position is achieved and therefore seen. A different way of saying the same thing. I find that it is a very small window and it either succeeds or doesn't, in which case you're perfectly set for a quick combat roll. Nice work!

The speed of the instict to switch from one brace to another or to move from a brace to beginning to scull is what impressed me most. Very impressive to a novice like me.
      Great video. Thanks . . . . .I know I'm a year late replying ;-)

I'm just another spectator here at this channel, but in one (at least) of their other clips I saw that one of them was named "Akiko," which is a female name.
