- Poornima Kulkarni is a Hindustani Classical vocalist, teacher and composer from Bangalore. She acquired her training in music mainly under Pt. Basavaraj Rajguru of the Kirana Gharana and Pt. Murli Manohar Shukla among others.
Poornima Kulkarni continued her recital at the FEA-curated Crossroads festival with a popular bandish composed by Ramashreya Jha in Raag Hemant.
She was accompanied by Pt. Omkar Gulvady on tabla and Narendra Nayak on harmonium. Tanpura support was provided by her student Kavita Shenoy and Neha Kumari.
At times, especially down the octave, it reflects a shade of Rageswari (also at times called Ragesri) when it comes down to Risabh.
Raageshri has komal Nishad ,where as Hemanth has a shuddha ni..so this is a very near raag to raageshri :)
There's some murchhana of Rageshwari (Rageshree) as teevra Madhyam is strong in both Rageshwari and Hemant... One can also identity sudden momentary flashes of Maru Bihag when the Rishav is accentuated in the abaroha... but as a matter of fact, Hemant (and Bhinna Shadaj, or, Hindol) are from the Bilawal family, while Rageshwari belongs to thaat Khamaj...

Why this raag sounds close to Maru Bihag? Is this raag has similar phrases to raag Maru?
Good observation! From Rajan Parrikar's web site:: "Hemant is a madhyam-pradhana raga and ... a murchhana on madhyam gives rise to an avirbhava (onset, appearance) of Raga MaruBihag."
