E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmission Rebuild Valve Body BMW 330i 325i DIY

  • So I've had to rebuild my transmission because it was leaking. This is part 3 of 3 videos that I will do on the subject. Check out the other parts here:
    Part 1: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
    Part 2: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
    There should be 5 documents related to rebuilding the transmission in this dropbox folder:
    www.dropbox.com/sh/g21ahp7i0f...
    In that folder you will find the exploded diagrams for the valve body as well as instructions for the proper resistances for all the solenoids.
    To see how to get the transmission in and out of the car, checkout my rear main seal videos:
    • BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
    • BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
    I bought my rebuild kit from The California Transmission Supply Company, which was an authentic ZF kit and they had the best prices I could find:
    www.thectsc.com/catalog/5hp19-...
    Check out Transtar's website here:
    www.transtar1.com/
    In addition to simply buying absolutely everything you need from them, including rebuild kits and friction rings and the oil pump, etc, you can get every small part inside of the transmission as well, including the little plastic tubes for the oil pump. Be careful to save your o-rings because they only come in the rebuild kit, I believe. They were out of those as separate items.
    If you need to rebuild your torque converter and don't want to let them do it for whatever reason (maybe you're not near them and it will cost too much to ship to them and back), you can also buy a rebuilt one from Torco Enterprise, which is in the Los Angeles area, and they also sell on eBay:
    www.torqueconverter1.com/
    I reference several other videos in this one, particularly those of Jeff Richardson, which I've created a playlist for:
    • ZF 5HP19 Transmission ...
    As well as this video from transmission builder Gary Ferraro:
    • ZF5HP19 Gear Monitorin...
    If anyone is wondering, here is the cost break down of the parts I bought (around Jan 2016):
    Torque Converter $201.65
    Oil Pipes $13.08
    Rebuild Kit $179.95
    Reverse Drum $92.00
    F Clutch Drum $50.00
    Friction Plates $120.00
    Oil Pump $288.75
    ATF Fluid $39.22
    Grand Total $984.65

    Still kinda paranoid I might've messed one up haha

    Dude! Awesome detailed job rebuilding your trans. I wish I would have kept my '01 325i. Loved that car! It was starting to have trans slippage problems as well as some other engine mechanical problems, some that I fixed and others that needed fixing. The trans issues are what made me decide to donate it after getting a different car. Didn't want to spend the money on replacing the trans. Had I watched these videos back then, I may have attempted rebuilding it. This is like Legos for me. Bookmarking your videos in the event I purchase another Beemer!

    Great video
    My grandson’s 1999 Porsche boxster with a ZF 5hp, he drove it about 4,000 miles. Transmission blew out the front seal. I pulled the transmission, torque converter dated 2017. Bushing looked good, torque converter nose looked new. Replaced the seal, after 50 miles, it blew out again. Pulled it out again, took pump out, clutches and pump looked new. Took valve body apart, new orifices, gasket, check balls, ohm readings on solenoids good, all valves seem to move smoothly. New o-rings, seals, and bushing. Vent tube and hole between bushing and seal clear.
    On test drive, shifts harsh between 2nd and 3rd, otherwise all else is good. He’s not sure if it was always like that.
    Before he goes off to collage with it, should I look at something else?
    What would cause the front seal to suddenly blow out?
    Thanks, Jim

The is a Company in NJ. that claim they can rebuild my old one for about $4oo. but I don't know if they just put a kit in or actually rebuild it. Just got off the phone with that co. and they say the transgo kit will work unless the bore is really bad. So cross your fingers I guess. The kit comes with rubber o rings and teflon O rings which comform to the wear in the regulator bore. Thanks again. I'll let you know and I'm looking forward to your vid on this problem. This is the zf5hp19. Thanks

      @50sKid  Před 7 lety

      I think a good transmission shop should own a sonnax vacuum test kit. I was watching the videos on their website last night. Let's you test the various parts of the valve body for how much air gap there is in the bores. Its actually not that expensive--about $220. That would confirm the problem.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 7 lety

      I don't have the vacuum kit. If you want to buy the tool and send it to me with your valve body, that's a different story. ;-). I just bought the transgo valve myself and will do the video on it soon. I also think it should be fine if you have your guy install it on yours. Btw, another option for you would be to simply purchase a replacement casting of that particular section of the valve body (Transtar should have them). That way you know you're not dealing with worn bores.

    Bravo. So I'm wondering if there are any upgrade kits out there with different springs like on some GM and Ford transmissions that will firm up the shift points, etc. also I've read about the sonnax rebuilt a units. Any thoughts on that? Again a great video. Noted that you didn't lube the pistons as you put them back, but I guess they will be.l bathed in trans fluid soon enough right?

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 8 lety

      +Robert Laugherty This is an electronically controlled transmission. The springs have nothing to do with the shift points. Yes the valve body works on hydraulic pressure so it wouldn't do anything until it was full of fluid. I haven't heard anything about sonnax rebuilt units.

    Hi kid, I like your vids, and wish I had your transmission knowledge. I have a 2001 325i with the 5hp19 trans. and for the second time it has blown the D drum apart at the crown of the snap ring. The first one was proly in there who knows how long, when it broke the crown where the snap ring holds the clutch pack I still had forward gears just no reverse. The second time we used a standard D drum and it did it again with in 5 months. It has been suggest to me to get an upgraded thicker by 20k and rebuild the regulator O rings and piston and springs and what ever come in the kit (trans star) equal. Do you think this will cure the problem? Thanks. Chuck

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 7 lety +6

      Chuck I've recently began to wonder what the original cause of the busted D/G drum and spun out pump bushing was. I'm starting to realize that it might be because the pressure regulator in the valve body is getting worn and causing pressure spikes. The solution is to install an oversized valve to restore proper pressure. Check out this blog post by an actual transmission builder: forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=379182&page=3 (the VW passat also uses the 5HP19). Transgo makes a replacement valve that is supposed to cure the problem: www.transgo.com/products.php?prd=5HP19-PR&homeinclude=catalog&category_id=176&parent_id=175&product_id=267 -- I'm considering doing a video about this.

    1. What solvent do you use?
    2. Do you just spray the parts and wipe them clean or do you let them soak in the solvent?
    3. Can you pressure wash the valve cover body and cover plate?
    Thanks in advanced!!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 7 lety +1

      I believe I used lacquer thinner but you can use kerosene. I dipped them in the solvent (use proper gloves). You can pressure wash the parts if you want but there is no need--they are not that dirty because they are always sitting in oil.

After gettin a new/used transmission installed in your e46 you have to reflash the onboard computer to read the new part right? They're telling me I have to get a new TCM because the vin on the newer part is married to the old car or something.. I wanna make sure I'm buying a good new TCM if that's the case but I don't know what to look for exactly? Also do I have to take apart the valve body and replace something in there?? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  Před 7 lety

      I don't know why you would have to change the TCM if you are installing the exact same transmission. The transmission doesn't have any computers inside of it that would cause the TCM not to work. The TCM would never know the transmission was changed as long as it was exactly the same kind of transmission.

Make sure there are no kinks, etc. Actually... you know there is a secondary thermostat that controls whether or not coolant flows into the ATF cooler. It could have gone bad. It is located beneath the coolant expansion tank (you have to pull the tank to get to it). I would try changing that. I've got a video coming up soon on changing the radiator and expansion tank, and I do change that thermostat as well.

    Do you have to dissasemble the valve body if you snapped one of the t40 bolts?

      Upon putting the valve body back in I torqued it too much and snapped it at the threads. Is there any recomandations you have on getting it out to replace it?

      It doesn't, no. Just gaskets and washers, that's what's normally replaced.

      Check the links in the description. There is one link for 5 documents. It's the one called zf-4-5-speed-auto-valve-bodies.pdf. It has diagrams and descriptions of the orifice sizes. It doesn't have colors because there are different colors depending on the year of manufacture. I think they changed something along the way.

    i can overhaul engines, but automatic transmissions are like rocket science to me, because i don't
    have a clue how they work, let alone that i would have to overhaul one. If i would have to open
    up one, parts would jump out, and then i wouldn't have a clue where they belong, so it would
    become trash.

      If you go in thinking like that, you're defeating yourself before you even get started. It's just a bunch of clutch drums and a valve body.

      @50sKid  Před 8 lety

      Wow that is a lot of miles. If it were me, I would rebuild the valve body. But, I cannot say for sure that will fix this problem. I can only tell you the direction I would go in.

      Yeah .. there's all this BS about Lifetime transmission. so i was hesitant to change the oil ..anywho... I commented on ur vacuum leak video earlier and i had codes PO174, Po171, and PO141..i bought that elm 327 u mentioned .. im going to attempt to mimic ur fuel trim video. The codes above are gone. except for PO174 and after the tran oil change i have also PO313,PO102,P1343 and P0741.. ill try to clean the tran sensor, and the MAF for now (clear codes and see if they come back).. i'm not sure how to approach the misfire issue in cylinder 1 (p1343).. i'm assuming that most of these codes are related.. any suggestion as to where to start..i feel like i'm sinking deep in quicksand here...thank you for your service in providing your time and knowledge.. pretty amazing of you.
