  • Over the course of his lengthy career, Kevin Costner has traveled through some serious peaks and valleys. The multi-talented A-lister gained considerable Hollywood power from 80s and 90s smashes like FIELD OF DREAMS, THE BODYGUARD and the Oscar-winning DANCES WITH WOLVES… but was then dragged down by notorious colossal box office flops WATERWORLD and THE POSTMAN.
While he may no longer be a major marquee name, Costner has remained busy with the smash hit series Yellowstone and lower-profile film roles. In this episode we catch up with the career of the actor, director, producer, sports fan and Western lover known to the world as Kevin Costner.

You missed out on the opportunity to highlight Costner's best "acting" gig in the movie Mr. Brooks. It was the first and only movie in which Costner played a psychopath. And that was a complete 180 degree deviation from the traditional roles he has done all throughout his career. And because of his charisma and the way he showcases the struggles his character has with his inner demons, the viewer emotionally connects to Costner's character and sides with him all throughout the movie while he is killing innocent people. And that is why Costner is a master actor, because he is able to make a psychopath likeable. If an actor mostly known for westerns, sports movies, and political dramas is able to play a psychopath so perfectly that the audience roots for the psychopath to succeed, that actor and the role deserve serious applause. The movie has a 7.3 on IMDb for a reason. Not to mention it has Demi Moore, William Hurt, Dane Cook, and an amazing supporting cast. I really wish you had talked more about Mr. Brookes and 3000 Miles to Graceland (there is a lot to say about that movie).

Well, that was because he had a great script. What happened to him is what happens to most of them. He got big, then he thought he didn't need any help, advice, or criticism, had the money to do what he wanted, and took on stuff that stank, or wasn't right for him (those gross accents). Looks like he's rediscovering his limits and therefore doing well in Yellowstone.

When I watched the Man of steel (in 2016) and that scene in particular, really didn't thought about the logic of it (flawed of course) but just made me cry. I think it was rightly done as acting is concerned. I'm not a fan of him but think public and critic are really moody sometimes and he has been judged more than many actors or directors, maybe because of his early success, it's very difficult to fill both critic and blockbuster expectations after a movie like Dance with wolves. Great video as always, thanks for sharing.

So much great work here from Kevin Costner. Dances With Wolves and JFK are two of my favorite moves even in their long theatrical form. However, to truly appreciate both films you have to watch the extended Director's Cuts of both. True, in both cases that adds approximately an hour more runtime, which is why they would never be shown that way in theaters, but in both cases there is so much more information and details given.
I also am a huge fan of both Waterworld and The Postman. Even my friends can't understand what I see in those films.
Field Of Dreams is a movie on another level. Philosophy, spirituality, existentialism, faith, belief - it's all there and more.

I agree completely. 3 Days to Kill was a new role for Costner and he did a damn good job with it. The movie wasn't as good as his acting was, but it still deserved to get more than a screenshot in this video. And I mentioned how he glossed over Costner's role in Mr. Brooks, which I feel was his best acting ever. Of course an actor who has done westerns, sports movies, and political dramas his entire career will succeed as an actor in those roles, but for Costner to branch out and play a psychopath that the audience loves (Mr. Brooks) and a Liam Neesom/Jason Bourne -esque action hired killer (3 Days to Kill)... those roles really showcase how masterful of an actor Costner is.

It was entertaining, but think people see that it could have been epic that should have spawned a franchise, but it fell short so people thought it failed. In that sense, there is a credible criticism and let-down.
Part of this is his playing Postman was just a ploy of a survivor and not a quest from someone who was on the brink when coming across the old mail truck and clung to this purpose out of a sense of purpose and hope...instead it was just a movie.

Speaking of accents, the modern English accent was invented in the early 1800s and is called Received Pronunciation. US accents more closely sound like the original English accents of the time period of the 17th through early 19th centuries. Saying that the US accent is wrong while the modern English accent is right is completely wrong for Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Neither accent would have sounded the same as what was around in the 12th century. It's pedantic to argue over the specific accent when the film was rather fine.
