It’s been a while since I’ve made a video game cover on this channel, huh? Well, when Square Enix reached out to me and asked if I was interested in doing a cover of the Main Theme from Octopath Traveler II, I said “uh, yes!” The original Octopath Traveler is one of my greatest inspirations for JRPG-style video game music. The score feels so much like classic RPGs, but realized with modern recording technology and live players. Of course, the game is great too! I knew that a piece this complex and layered would need a large ensemble to capture all the layers, so I decided to write out this arrangement for big band! The first half of this arrangement feels like a more modern big band arrangement that has a bit of influence of orchestral music, but by the time we get to the second half, the swing kicks in, and it feels like a good ol’ burnin’ big band chart! I had a lot of fun recording all the horns for this project! I’ve been spending quite a bit of time working on my brass playing since choosing to stop making CZcams videos regularly, and I think it shows in this video! Thanks so much to my good friend @Dom Palombi for joining me on this recording and providing some drums to round out the ensemble!

Seeing you go from small saxophone covers to being asked by Square Enix, one of the biggest game companies to do a cover is just so amazing.I’m so proud of you and seeing how far you’ve come.
I wish Nintendo gave their music the same distribution treated that Square Enix, Capcom, and Sega give theirs. And I’m just giving big corporate examples, just to drive in Nintendo’s lack of excuse. These 4 companies have commissioned and employed so many talented musicians to expand their catelogue into this day. The only exception was HAL Labs publishng Planet Robobot OST for those under Nintendo and that’s thanks to them owning the copyright to Kirby as an IP.
@@corrinflakes9659 isn’t Xenoblade chronicles published by Nintendo? I might be wrong but regardless those games have some of the most beautiful music in my opinion!

@@corrinflakes9659 Square isn't really a good example tho we had 2 FF tracks in Smash 4 when Cloud was released. They were extremely stingy with DQ soundtrack as well. Only got mildly better when we got Sephiroth

I love how on the sequence of chords at the end the top note is the same - it puts the focus on the changing harmonies lower down in the texture which is really interesting

YOOOOOOOO. The fact that square enix asked you to make this is amazing! They definitely made the correct decision. Octopath's main theme always made me feel like I was on some sort of ship, a sorta homey rocking back and forth sort of vibe that I feel that you completely encapsulated in the cover. The shift to the swing completely took me offguard, but the horns hit SOO damn hard. Amazing work as always!

This is why Square is my favorite game company. They treat their music so well and actively try to find ways to connect it more with the community. I would have never played this game had they not done that. Just looked like another pretty RPG to me, but they pushed their music so hard that I started listening and loving it. As soon as I can I am going to get a copy of this. Goes without saying, but this is such a great arrangement. Dom killed on the set!

By the way, I started learning music some 15 years ago after "passively" listening to the music of great classics such as the older Final Fantasy, Zelda and Mario games while playing the games themselves for years, until I suddenly realized that the music itself was why I liked them so much, so I totally feel you in your every note!
