    The Boomerang is still one of my favorite old school Tamiya RC’s. My parents bought me one of these brand new back in Christmas of 1986. Don’t even remember what happened to mine, but I wish I still had it. They’re going for $700 and up on Ebay. If I only knew then what I know now, I would have kept it pristine and never got rid of it. I think I traded it for a Clod Buster if I remember correctly.

For me, the nostalgia has a lot to do with me admiring all the Taiyo Jet Fighters in the toy stores in my childhood- and getting one for Christmas one year. I didn’t know about the Boomerang back then, but it was such a pleasure discovering it, the ‘real deal’. It is so pleasing to my eyes. And finally I can admire it at home and even run it 😀

    Great video, I really like this model and chassis. At 2:45, above/under the blue battery holder I can see holes - can the blue battery holder be positioned more outwards using those two holes? That would give around 1 cm more space for battery length? Am I correct or am I missing something? I am considering to buy me a model with this chassis type and I would like to use one of my lipos for it. Thanks in advance.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Ahh, I think I disagree. I really like the rereleases being a little different, like the decals and other small things. That way it can easily be identified as a rerelease, and not a modern thing trying to pose as a vintage one ☺️ And since all my Tamiyas are runners I really prefer the rereleases (no brittle old plastic).

    @barrysrcdump3557 Před 5 lety +1

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety

      Horrible and bouncy I would say :-) But like the Grasshoppers, these strange designs add a little extra to the unique experience of running these old Tamiyas :-) I don't think it was meant for style/design originally, as the Hotshot pretty much was the first "real" high end 1980ies racing buggy from Tamiya in 1985. So I believe Tamiya actually thought it was working great back then. Lot's of Hotshot family models adopted it from the Hotshot: The Boomerang, Hotshot II, Thunder Shot etc. But even back then there was dual shock after market shock towers available.

      The Optima was a present on a significant anniversary, so it's special not just because of it's high end status. It only has a 1060 and a Team Powers Cup motor, just so I can trundle it around every so often. 👍

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety

      I think it is wise not to do any overkills with the electronics on the old cars, even the re-releases with fresh plastic. They where just not designed and tested for modern speed. I have the stock motors in all of my Tamiya re-releases. Even the 380 motor in the Grasshoppers :-)

      For a starter kit, I would always recommend a Grasshopper or a Hornet. Especially the Grasshopper is such an easy and quick build. Generally a 2WD and if one needs something a little more “modern” compared to the 1980ies design, a DT-03 (Neo Fighter, Racing Fighter, Aqroshot) is a good choice. All Grasshoppers, Hornets and DT-01/02/03’s can be found quite cheap too, so nothing is lost if one finds out it wasn’t for him/her in the middle of a build 😃

    Sadly the front stabilizer mounts are so soft that the stabilizer does have little impact. Thats a pitty since with the one damper setup front it is so important.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety

      Yeah, it does seem very bouncy even with the stabilizer. I'm not sure how much it does while actually running, but when testing the stabilizer hand-held, the general principle of the stabilizer seems to work. But yes, this thing will never be as effective as a normal set-up with dual front shocks.

    I've decided to watch this series in reverse! This does look like a nice bit of kit and they aren't too dear either. I don't really understand why they used to do that odd one shock front suspension. Looking at the running video it does seem to work ok. I've got an old M01 Mini that has the same sort of thing although that is so low to the ground that it doesn't make much difference. Anyway nice video, I'll now go back to when you built it 😀

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  Před 5 lety +1

      Nice, Pete! That could actually be a pretty cool idea for a video, going in reverse, from a final result/run to parts in the box. Might just do that some day :-) And yeah, I don't really understand it either. But they must have thought it was a good idea for performance back then, giving that the Hotshot was promoted as a top of the line race buggy, and one of the first from Tamiya. But it does work yes, but I think dual shocks work better. It feels a bit bouncy in the front and more stabile in the front. But I suspect the front stabilizer also helps out a bit. Ahh yes, the M-01. I believe it has both mono shock in the front and rear, but yes, as long as they are oil filled and hard, I don't think it makes too much difference for an on road car. Thanks for the nice words and for watching, Pete!
