  • Like many other cruisers, Suzuki's Boulevard is brash and gaudy but has sold consistently since its introduction in 2006. Now, it has been updated and renamed to the Intruder but remains the same under the skin. For some reason, we've never tested on on The Bike Show so Mat takes a deep breath and comes away impressed.

As someone who has been living with this bike for 7 years now, my honest assessment is as follows: it has awesome presence. Relative to the sheer size and style of the bike, the power & performance are Adrenalin pumping. You constantly have to remind yourself of its dimensions, because it accelerates and handles so well, you can easily forget how much road you need to stop it, how far you can bank it over before scraping the pegs, and the extra persuasion it needs to lean into the bends with that massive rear tyre that loves a straight line. If you’re coming off a sport bike it can catch you out, but once you’re tuned in to its characteristics and learn to ride it accordingly, it’s a fabulous machine. Such a comfortable seat, and the clamshell riding position (feet forward, but upper body “engaged” slightly forward rather than completely laidback) sums up its crossover cruiser-sport heritage. I love it, and it’s a keeper.

To understand what this bike is all about, you have to remember why most people choose to ride motorcycles in the first place. It’s for the sensation that it gives you, and let’s be honest, for the beauty of the machine. This bike delivers a sensation all of its own. the feel and sound of a cruiser with all that additional power on tap when you want it, and a unique streamlined styling that bridges the gap between cruiser and sports better than anything else except maybe the much smaller Kawasaki Vulcan S. I’ve had mine for about 7 years now, I also own a more conventional sports tourer. The second bike is my workhorse, it carries more luggage, is a better all-weather ride, easier to lug around the driveway/car park, keep up with similar bikes on the twisties, filter through traffic. The M109R is for when there’s nothing to do except enjoy the ride, and if I could only keep one, it would be that one (I have a car for the other stuff if I need it.)

There was only one other bike in this genre which interested me, the Rocket 3, but at 5’8” I didn’t fancy balancing 350kg on my toes, and I can flatfoot this one. My one and only crtitcism is the lack of ABS, but I only ride in the dry if I can help it.

This is called M109R in Hawaii (109 cubic inches). It is a vastly under rated motorcycle. Especially for the money. It will easily equal or beat any of the Harley V-Rods, and will EAT any Harley 1200cc Sportster. The pedigree of the engine is unique. It was originally a V4 super bike engine, that was cut down to a Vtwin and changed to shaft drive. It loses so little on the shaft drive that you can see why they did it. Plus no chain stretch and low maintenance. The torque is modulated by special exhaust waste-gates, don't screw with the exhaust pipes eh? By modifying it in very small, inexpensive increments you can easily pull "another" 20 horsepower out it. Now that the VRod is out of production, the Indian Scout and the Ducati are the closest to it.

I love my M109 and the only gripe I have is the rear shock. It's terrible, with hardly any rebound dampening. A lot of guys buy after market shocks for it. The front is ok but the rear lets the bike down. You just adapt to the pogo feeling you get when cornering and hitting a dip.
The bike holds a line quite well and the brakes pull it up very well indeed. A relaxing bike to ride compared to a sports bike. I had a Speed Triple before the Bully and the change took a little getting used to, especially in the corners. Your boot heel touches down first, then the pegs followed by the mounting points for the foot pegs and frame. Hitting the frame can catch you out as it will kick out the rear because it's acting like a pivot point, taking weight of the rear tyre.
It's a satisfying bike to ride with plenty of grunt to put a smile on your face while being computer tech free. No ABS, traction control, etc, etc..... Simple and a big bag of fun!

You know, I'm a Harley Davidson guy through and through. If I ever has to choose a different bike it'd be an Indian. However I font understand the hang up about metric cruisers. These bikes were literally made to appeal to us Americans. Japan has made multiple bikes just for us. I don't know about all of you but that's pretty flattering.

Suzuki ran with the Intruder name for 20 yrs (85 to 05), then changed to Boulevard, which I like better. Now, what is old is new again...back to Intruder :( Don't understand that move. They should have separated this beautiful bike from the rest and just named it the Suzuki M1800. Honda had a gold mine with the VTX 1800 and stopped it also. My thinking is why purchase something that isn't going to be around. I'm not the only one who thinks this way. And really, get the cruisers up off the ground so you're not scraping when cornering. Folks here want big, powerful, and handling.

TJ there's actually no real official definition of muscle bike,i feel vmax is like a muscle naked, while roadstar and intruder is a muscle cruiser

Not many bikes that will do what the Suzuki does? Well it must be time to throw your leg over a Yamaha XV1900 A Roadliner or Stratoliner, isn't it?

Better alternatives for a name… “Vanguard”, “Titan”, “Conqueror”, “Battlestar”, “Rogue”, or for the historically minded, “Destrier” (the great Warhorse of the Middle Ages.) Boulevard is too tame and lazy, Intruder sounds furtive (and this bike is anything but that.) Or just “Warhorse.”

Most 'muscle' bikes have around that or less. Think CB1300, ZRX1200, XJR1300. Classic examples of the muscle bike category, and all around the 100 - 120 hp mark.

Duncan Fraser how much power the traditional muscle car has

    • @sargeant002

Duncan Fraser have you ever ridden one and really gotten after the throttle. HP isn't the only thing when considering muscle. Torque for days on this bike. Pulls very hard for a cruiser.
      Go test one....carefully. :)

That I can believe, top end for the M109R somewhere between 120-130 mph (taken mine to 120) but where 7 gonna do that? it’s the torque & power delivery that provide the fun. If I need to ride fast I just switch to my Kawasaki Z1000SX which (beautiful and impressive as the Rocket 3 may be,) would leave it standing.
