The reason for the "anti-drop" in Spectrum Obligato is cuz it plays during a cutscene, the drop is actually one of the characters screaming "BOOYAH" at the final boss 😆

Honestly, the DLC soundtrack really has to be heard to while also having the gameplay especially at the bosses. The first and end boss are fully synced to the music so without the sound effects of these you are missing a good chunk of the music

Fun fact! All of the enemies in this dlc are named after different musical terms, there's the homing arpeggios, the asynchronous rondo, parallel canon, marching andante, and much more, and their names are actually directly linked to what they're like in-game (for example, the parallel canon is an encounter with multiple versions of the same enemies that appear in intervals, just like what the term represents)

    Context for the non-Splatoon people:
    - Unconsciousness is the theme for the tutorial boss, where you’re fighting to free Marina (one of the recurring characters that helps out the player) from the control of… something (you have no idea what’s happening story wise at this point).
    - Souv3nir is one of the basic level tracks. Each track has three variations (that’s where the 1, 2, and 3 versions come from) depending on how far you are into the run. (Yes, this DLC is a rougelike.) Level 1-9 plays the 1 variations of the track, levels 11-19 plays the 2 version, and 21- 29 plays the 3rd iteration.
    - 0ct0ptic0n, Ech0 0nslaught, and C0ld St0rage are the themes for the three potential mid-bosses you can see on levels 10 and 20.
    - New World Order is the main theme for the main story final boss, when you finally reach the 30th stage.
-Spectrum Obligato is the obligatory hype-track-for-the-final-phase-of-the-final-boss that Splatoon always likes pull. The second half of the track is actually one massive reference to Ebb and Flow, which is probably the most recognizable track from Off the Hook (Pearl and Marina, two of the companion characters in the DLC).
    - #47 Onward, as you said, is the credits theme, but it is _drastically_ different from the other credits theme in the series. Primarily because the other companion character, Acht (a.k.a. Dedf1sh, a more techno/electronic heavy artist, who was responsible for most of the music in Octo Expansion, and a childhood friend of Marina) also helped making the track.
(This comment is already long enough, so I put the story synopsis in the replies.)

    • @xraenon1664
      @xraenon1664 Před 2 měsíci +26

Story-wise, the DLC campaigns tend to be a bit deeper with significantly darker tones and implications. The plot of Side Order kind goes like this:
      - Marina finds out that Kamabo Co, a corporate front for the main antagonist of Octo Expansion, kidnapped and wiped the memories (a process know as “sanitizing”) of a _lot_ of people.
      - Marina gets access to all of Kamabo Co.’s data, and attempts to build a program that will allow the sanitized individuals to reunite with their memories.
      - She is successful, but it took the help of a lot of her Octoling friends, who had to flee their precious homes to reach the surface world.
      - The fears and doubts of change of all these people forms into a manifestation of the idea of Order, which hacks the program, and basically turns Marina’s memory-recovery software into a Sword Art Online situation.
      - Order aims to wipe the will of all living beings, creating a world where there’s no need for choice or conflict and everyone simply does as they’re told. It aims to accomplish this by using people’s smartphones to pull their consciousness into the program, and use a process called “Grayscaling” to remove their will.
      - Eight (the player character), Marina, Pearl (Marina’s band mate and basically canon romantic partner at this point) and Acht (a former sanitized Octoling that managed to regain their memories before Order took full control of the program) have to fight back against Order to recover the de-sanitization program and stop them from wiping the of the planet.

One thing for you to note probably. The "fake vocals" arent all too fake. They are recorded by actual singers for the idol's music. They are just singing words that dont exist in any language and heavily edited to where their voices are more "cephalopod like" or not a human voice. So when the singer hit that highnote in onward, she really did.
And while here, i hope your patrons can request you losten to the other tracks from the stages like routine, jitters and demolish.

Side Order focuses on a different idol duo- Pearl and Marina of Off the Hook. They composed "Spectrum Obligato ~ Ebb & Flow (Out of Order)" (yes thats the full title) alongside another Octoling, Acht. The gap when it sounds like a beat drop is because Pearl is in the middle of screaming BOOYAAAH and they didn't add it in the ost version for whatever reason.
Acht (otherwise known by their stage name as Dedf1sh) also composed #47 Onward with Off the Hook!

An obligato in music is something that cannot be taken out, so what the song is saying is that the color and vibrancy of the Splatoon world is integral. It also ties in to how the final boss calls the function of removing people’s free will “grayscaling”, or the removing of color.

Here is some context. I try to be unspoilery but still spoiler warning:
    - Unconscience:
First Boss theme. The somber sounding voice is Marina. She is 1 of the 2 members from "Off the Hook".
They are the main idol group/news cast in Splatoon 2.
Same thing goes for the "Squid Sisters" in Splatoon 1 and "Deep Cut" in Splatoon 3.
They are voiced by real people, with some modulars of course, which also means that vocals are not primarily "Squid Sisters". They all sing and there are also a lot of bands outside of these 3 that have vocals. I suppose percentagewise you could get to the conclusion that the "Squid Sisters" primarily do the vocals since they do have a lot of songs due to them being Gen 1 boosted, but it's kinda like saying Pikachu is the primarily Electric type. Well no, but kinda, but still no^^'
    - Souv3nir:
Floor theme. The naming thingy is just a funny Leet gimmick to differentiate these versions of the same track. It's a character quirk.
The hecticness of the track fits the gameplay. Your character is basicly trying to escape a hacked Metaverse. You can sorta feel the original intent to do something good being turned into a prison of sorts. The hecticness comes from fighting back
    - 0ct0ptic0n:
A Boss theme. It's basicly a spinning carousel that screams. There are a lot of bits and pieces in there that seasoned players recognize from "Off the Hook". There is also this part that just screams carousel to me.
    - Ech0 0nslaught:
A Boss theme. Your fighting different you's from past games.
It's kinda like a Shadow Link situation.
    - New World Order:
Final Boss theme. Terrefying Octopus thingy attacks to the beat. Until...
    - Spectrum Obligato:
Final Boss theme. True Final battle.
It sounds so upbeat because we break free and are just styling all over the boss.
The build up at the start sounds so bad, because it doesn't have the climatic scream that it has ingame.
Without going too much into detail, it's a very magical moment that includes a rapper and 2 DJ's, one of of which who also sings, to bring a bit of color to this pale world and end this controlling madness.
It also uses parts of "Ebb and Flow" which has kinda become the main theme for "Off the Hook", similar to "Calamari Inkantation" for the "Squid Sisters" (some would say "Calamari Inkantation" is THE Splatoon theme but I would argue that that would go to "Splattack").
    - #47 Onward:
Credits theme. "Off the Hook" is singing and "Dedf1sh" is DJ'ing (and yes their name is a Deadmau5 reference). I know it's kinda difficult to tell all these different voices apart but once you hear it enough you can tell whose voice is who.
Marina has a lower raspier voice than most others in Splatoon, however in this one you can hear Alice Peralta (VA) hitting these beautiful high notes.
Pearl (the other member of this duo) is the one who raps and screams a lot. Rina Itou (VA) is the one who flows through the tracks masterfully, making for a really interesting mix of range for these two.
Splatoon 3 was announced with 2 Waves of DLC in mind and this was wave 2. Wave 1 is more of a fanservice thing, bringing things back, while wave 2 brought the fresh breath of this new Campaign similar to "Octo Expansion" for Splatoon 2. It makes sense that this sounds like an end of a chapter because DLCwise and thus storywise it basicly is the end for now.
The next major chapter would be the Final Splatfest for Splatoon 3 which is like the end of an era for the online part in Splatoon games.
Splatoon 3 is about 1,5 years old so it will probably be a while until Splatoon 4 comes out with a new Campaign.
This franchise is growing in a rapid pace and once a new Nintendo console arises, I wouldn't be suprised to see more of it within a year of release.
    ...
    ..
    .
    ...
Anyway, don't worry about that. There is and there will be plenty of Splatunes to listen to until the next big step:
    - Check out Splatoon 2s "Octo Expansion" for 80s vibes
    - within the last months Nintendo has also released some Splatunes with english translated lyrics and also just regular in game performances
    - there are concerts (because Splatoon is insanely huge in Japan) which can easily make you more familiar with these 3 big groups and their voices
    - if these concerts are too long for your taste, you could also just ask for some of the best tracks of each group and you'll probably recognize the difference between the voices and the music style
Splatoon has a lot to offer :D

For full context on Side order as a whole, splatoon 1 and 2 both had a "Final Fest" the last major splat fest in the game's life at the end of it's update cycle. these final fests determine something big in the next game, the first game had Callie vs Marie, Marie won and the next game's story mode plot centered around finding a kidnapped Callie.
Splatoon 2's final fest was Chaos vs Order, Chaos won and the next game is completely themed around it, taking place splatsville the aptly named city of chaos, this DLC is name Side Order because of reasons you've probably put together now and follows the actions and consequences of Marina and what she decided to start working on right after that fest.

Context - as best as I can give it - for the DLC is that it's a roguelike set in a VR... Health centre, I guess?... that has been taken over by a corrupted AI that's a manifestation of order. Which leads to this sort of trance vibe for most of the pieces in here.
Unconscience in particular is from the boss fight while you're freeing Marina, who designed the system, by fighting a giant version of her that's hooked into the system. The vocals in that are from Marina and Pearl - the fictional band Off the Hook - with the whispered stuff seemingly representing Marina trying to call out of the mind control and the stronger rap vocals are from Pearl.
Vocals change from band to band. Squid Sisters were the host band of Splatoon 1 (Callie and Marie, have a fairly 'standard' J-pop vibe), Off The Hook were the host band of Splatoon 2 (Pearl and Marina, have a bit more of an R&B style), while Deep Cut are the host band of Splatoon 3 (Shiver, Frye, and Big Man, they have a Brazilian/Indian/Japanese fusion going on to their music). But most of the music in the games aren't by these fictional bands. Their music is mostly within splatfests.
#47 Onward is - in universe - by Dedf1sh. Who's real name in universe is Acht. And did most of the music for Octo Expansion. With Off Tho Hook collaborating for the vocals on it.

Moreso than a lot of other game soundtracks splatoon's tracks benefit from being presented in context. Both because of the musical identities of various characters and themes (there are a number of tracks with in-universe remixes for example) and because there are some tracks that are very specifically meant to work with in-game sfx, events or other tracks. Spectrum Obligato is an example of both, being a remix/in-universe artist collab that plays with in-game SFX in this first part and a two-part song.

Similarly, Souvenir also has 3 different versions of the track, each corresponding to a different difficulty of the level it plays in. You listened to Souv3nir, the track that corresponds to the hardest difficulty and thus its the most erratic sounding version of the track

Unconscience always has, and always will, remind me of Billie Ellish for no reason.
Also, Souvn1r is a lot calmer than Souv3nir (idk bout 2ouvenir though).
The files should corrupt more often! /j But in all seriousness, this video was so fun, even with the bad video quality.

So side order takes place in a virtual world and has you play through randomly selected levels with different goals. Each goal has a different theme associated with it, and each of those themes has three versions for easy, normal, and hard levels, which is why there are two other versions of souv3nir. Each difficulty’s theme is separated from the other versions by a 1, 2, or 3 in the title. Bosses then have a 0 in their song names. The virtual setting is also why the soundtrack features way more electronic music along with 2 of the main characters being DJs. The main vocalists in the songs that have them are actually Pearl and Marina from the musical duo off the hook, not the squid sisters, as the two of them are major characters in the dlc. They were the main idols in splatoon 2 and and played a major role in the story and music of that games dlc too. Another cool detail is that spectrum obligato, as the final boss theme, contains the motif for the level clear theme constantly to hype the player up. It’s like a victory lap, and the way it builds over time is meant to match up with each phase of the fight.

  • @Gaiacrusher9fan2
    @Gaiacrusher9fan2 Před 2 měsíci +4

To give some context to Spectrum Obligato: That brief pause before the music starts up again is when Pearl does her famous "BOO-YAAAAAH!!!" before the final boss transitions into an extra 4th phase where you get to go absolute BEAST MODE while the other half plays, which I've seen titled as "Ebb & Flow (Out of Order)".

I Love the music in sideorder because it really captures the circumstances in the lore. Marina had made this simulation that trapped everyone’s souls. Meaning that in the real world they actually aren’t there mentally. Rather, they’re just brainless or soulless people walking around. Each weapon you pick is actually someone’s soul, and beating Order will set the soul free. The fact that these souls are trapped in this simulation is where the creepy aura seeps into the music.

The PvP is the only place that where all of the tracks have vocals. In every other mode/place there is either „some“ vocal tracks or none at all. Though I guess the „city“ category has a lot of vocal tracks. Mainly Splatfest and lobby tracks for the PvP.
Most of the tracks suggested were more of the popular tracks and probably more than half of them were from the PvP. If a channel member reads this, I think these suggestions might make for good reactions:
    - Deadf1sh (I don’t think she’s heard any of Deadf1sh‘s tracks yet except for the Splattack remix wich is basically just a remix of a PvP soundtrack from the first game and I think their tracks would be cool for Emily to react to.)
    - ω3 + Grizzco (As someone who has spent hundreds and hundreds of hours listening to this while grinding Salmon Run I think more Salmonid music would be cool to listen to. Especially Big Run. (Make her listen to „Clickbait“ beforehand.))
    - Various singleplayer hubworld and level tracks from all 3 games (would be cool to have her hear. The strangeness of some of these tracks will keep her company.
    - „Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion - Final boss but it’s music only“ (Spoiler warning for the cutscenes and gameplay surrounding the final boss of Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion DLC.)
    - Any other tracks that aren’t from the PvP modes that I haven’t listed (There are lots of tracks I haven’t listed that she might enjoy. Like Nasty Majesty for example.)

  • @ChargedBonsai98

Some context that will clear up A LOT of questions: this DLC basically exists in the matrix. At the end of splatoon 2 there was an event (called a splatfest) that decided whether splatoon 3 would be themed around order or chaos. Chaos won, so this DLC shows off what the world could've looked like if order won. This is why everything looks so boring (not negative) and the names of the songs are so odd. Additionally, there are 4 or 5 types of main objectives, with the song changing depending on how far you are in the game. Souven1r is the song you get during the first 10 floors on 8-ball levels, 2ouvenir during the middle 10 8-ball levels, and Souv3nir during the last 10. This pattern is repeated with the other objectives, such as with the songs J1tters/Jitter2/Jitt3rs and demol1sh/demoli2h/d3molish.

I'd like to give a small overview for the dlc:
it is a single player campaign with a roguelite formula (the floor after floor type)
thematically, there's a digital theme, which is why the themes only use electronic instruments (and vocals).
The numbers 1, 2 and 3 refer to the progress in the tower (thus, "souvenir" and 4 other songs have 3 versions each), while the number 0 refers to a boss theme, which simply depends on which boss you fight.
all in all, I really love this dlc, and I'd love it if you gave it a try.

Spectrum Obligato is a remix of Ebb & Flow from the Octo Expansion DLC, but where ebb & flow progresses like a regular pop song, spectrum feels very much like just background noise. You’re absolutely right about the lack of a drop, but it’s because you’re waiting for the action onscreen. Other parts feel like filler while your character is moving around and the song can’t progress until you perform a certain action in-game. I can’t mentally separate the song from the gameplay when I listen to it

All the tracks with numbers replacing letters are by the in universe musician d3df1sh (the name parodies Deadmau5) who is a mind-corrupted Octoling. She also did the music for Splatoon 2's Octo Expansion where all the tracks were named with a #number before the title, so this is a new spin on that which probably ties into her plot since she's actually physically in the game in Side Order. (This is also why #47 Onward is named the way it is, which itself is a really cool nod to a leitmotif associated with the Octo species throughout all 3 games and their DLCs, which is really fitting to the plot of this DLC but I won't delve into that too much).
Also, no not all vocals are the Squid Sisters. There are many many bands and artists in the franchise, the Squid Sisters are the main idols from Splatoon 1 who host the news, Splatfests and the story mode. The vocals you hear in Spectrum Obligato for example are Splatoon 2's idols: Off The Hook (who are the main focus of this DLC) and the song remixes in one of their frequently re-occuring songs "Ebb and Flow" from Splatoon 2.

And for Splatoon enjoyers or just curious people, I highly recommend Caitlin Koi CZcams channel. She takes some songs of these idol groups and edit a video clip for more context and life to the songs.
But more importantly, she writes and puts lyrics that LOOK good, because it captures the personality of the singers and their inspired origins, but also that SOUND good, because you can almost hear the lyrics, it's not a mumbo jumbo anymore.
