    Aside from Sayo-nara and Just Monika, most of the horror from the music comes from the fact that Act II's music is identical to Act I's except subtle differences. Random notes get shifted up or down a semitone, the music cuts out entirely at certain narrative beats before coming back in like nothing happened, parts of it get sped up or slowed down, and throughout the entire soundtrack certain instruments represent specific characters, so the music plays around with that, too.

    • @superactivitylad
      @superactivitylad Před 3 měsíci +8

      yeah, i was going to make a comment about how just listening to the soundtrack out of context without having played the game is not going to do the music justice. the exact moments that the game changes the music during gameplay are what makes it so effective as horror.

    I really love "Your Reality". It's one thing that it's essentially the main theme but with lyrics, which is pretty funny, but also how those lyrics tie perfectly together with Monika's character. Obviously, having not played the game, she wasn't gonna have much of a reaction to it, but I always have this solemn feeling whenever I hear it.

    YES, YOU FINALLY REACTED TO PEAK HORROR!
    Also, Sayori disappearing during Sayo-nara was clever. Iykyk!
    Also, to answer your question, well it’s kinda hard to do that without spoiling it. But just so you know, Sayo-nara and Just Monika aren’t the only moments of horror. You really should play the game if you want to experience everything (there’s both a free version on Steam and a paid version with some extra content)

    I enjoyed watching Game Grumps play this game. It was so great watching the mood go from "Ha ha, let's voice the game goofy." to "whoa whoa! What the heck?! Stop!" Now, too many are in on the joke, so to speak. You just don't see the same affect on people. Mostly.

  • @xraenon1664
    @xraenon1664 Před 3 měsíci +5

    If just listening to the music is enough to make you look behind you, then the game itself might be a little much. Unfortunately, the music itself is about as much as you can expose yourself to without catching major spoilers, so it’s kinda hard to make references to any story beats that the songs mention.
    DDLC is honestly just a phenomenal game, and was one of the big breakouts of the meta storytelling/forth wall breaking games. Also, considering that a visual novel could gain this much of a cult following with how few people actually enjoyed that style back in 2019 tells you just how well this was pulled off.
    In terms of how the game is a psychological horror with so much upbeat music, it’s pulled off in a pretty ingenious way. There are obviously the big twists, but there are other details. Sometimes the music will temporarily glitch or warp for smaller scenes where the character sprites do the same, but the things I really personally like are the small details that you might not notice. Sometimes a poster in the back of the classroom might reference a certain less-than-happy scene. Sometimes a character sprite will slowly warp, only being noticeable if the player sits on one screen for a long time. The story even will throw out hints when characters reference things speak in certain ways or reference things that they shouldn’t have any knowledge about. And the game uses next to no jumpscares, with is a breath of fresh air compared to so many other mediocre indie horror games.
    TL;DR: If you like psychology horror, play this game. There’s a reason it popped off online back in the day. (It’s also great for streamer/video reactions ;)

    the end credits song is both very sad and can also be scary to thing about if you interpret the lyrics another way:
    "In my hand is a pen that will write a poem of me and you" -> "In my hand is a knife that will "write a poem" of me and you"
    "The ink flows down into a dark puddle" -> "The blood flows down into a dark puddle"

    Sooo, the great and downside to this game is it expects you to both know tropes of dating Sim visual novels and also not know the extent of what Python can do, Python being the software most anime-style visual novels are made with. Musically it's very simple, but I love it. One thing I will say though is the game was the passion project of one person, Dan Salvato, so the simplicity in most sections is to emphasize the details in others.
