My personal one of this is Sweets. I didn't even like him as a character that much at first because his sole role (for like an entire season) was to be a staff psychiatrist who couldn't connect with his clients, and they mostly used him as a butt-monkey a lot of the time. Most of his points were accurate, but the writers deliberately chose to make him present his points in the worst possible way to people he really should be more familiar with.
And then they started to grow. And then HE started to grow. And then he had a fiancee, and I actually really liked him, and he had a PLACE on the team, and the team ribbed him good-naturedly but would actually take his advice into account.
AND THEN THEY KILLED HIM. PREGNANT FIANCEE. GOOD PLACE IN HIS CAREER. BUDDING FRIEND/SUPPORT GROUP. ACTUAL RESPECT BOTH EARNED AND GIVEN. BANG. FUNERAL EPISODE. GRIEVING TEAMMATES.

No what I’d do as an English teacher would be that I’d have all my students fill a “getting to know you” card. It would include their favorite book/movie and favorite characters from said work. I would use those lists to create assignments.
Every time a student either wouldn’t follow directions or wouldn’t accept a compromise (because we have a stupidly strict time table to stick to) they would get a custom assignment. The custom assignment will be one of the worst fanfics I can find with as many of the student’s favorite characters as possible and they would have to either correct it all (if they need to practice technical skills like punctuation) or write a minimum of one page about why this is or isn’t a well-written fanfic, including proof.

He found out from a mutual friend that his ex's new boyfriend left her because he couldn't stand being in that house because he was convinced it was haunted because of the "vibe" and the "bad vibes" nearly drove the ex insane until she eventually moved back in with her parents and tried to rent the place out instead, except no renters ever wanted to stay after the first month and some even broke their leases to move out because the place "felt off" or "had a hostile air" that they couldn't explain. He eventually stepped in and offered to buy the place for double whatever she charged for rent, and she gladly gave it up. He removed the noisemakers from where he hid them and enjoyed his home. So that's another idea.

That whole "getting in trouble for reading" thing is real. When I was a kid my "punishments" were so ass backwards because of how much I enjoyed reading. I'd either be made to play videogames instead (a random one of my mother's choice and she'd usually pick this one Dukes of Hazzard racing game or this disk that had old arcade games that could be played on a PS2) or I'd have to go outside without a book. It got to the point where I would try to read the nutrition facts on cereal boxes and try to feign being concerned for my health. Backfired when she stopped buying the good cereal...

Had a character marry his partner, they had a pretty big age gap, then got an incurable disease 35 years into their marriage, died ~5 years later losing more and more of their memory along the way, their partner wanted to care for them in their old age despite being young enough to be able to remarry, character died on their wedding anniversary and a week later their partner *implied* committed suicide. Did I originally plan for this to happen? Not really, but it came to me in one of those random thoughts and made me cry for an hour straight and then I was like, "It's perfect." So, yeah. Sometimes, as a writer, you just gotta let your characters suffer.
